Springfield Armory XD-E

Pretty cool. Unless the trigger is really outstandingly smooth, I don't see it supplanting my other hammer fired guns. It's nice to have options though.

I'll definitely fondle one when encountered.

Pros: it's an XD. I like the grip on those guns. It has a manual safety which I also like. It's slim and compact. I've recently gotten away from DA/SA but maybe I'll come back some day.

Cons: heavy at 25 oz. especially for a single stack. 8+1

Interesting that Springfield would go that route, but I suppose they are sort of the first to do it. I can't think of any other super slim single stack pistol that's hammer fired DA/SA. If my memory banks are correct, the only other polymer framed slim hammer fired guns for concealed carry are the Sig P290 and the Sccy CPX 1 and CPX 2, but the Sig and Sccy are DAO pistols. The only other subcompact hammer fired DA/SA guns that I can think of off the top of my head are the HK P2000SK and the P30SK.

That said, I must say I'm not totally blown away by the weight. It's heavier than the standard XD-S, PPS, Shield, and Glock 43. Heck, even the chubby little HK P30SK is marginally lighter.

Seems like the answer to an unasked question, but one marked improvement is the importation of the XD Mod 2 grip texture and shape to the single-stack XD line. The older grenade texture that came from the XDm iterations is not as good, I think.

i like these compact single stack, but would prefer a longer 4"+barrel to maximize round potential.

i realize im alone on this but concealing longer barrels is easy...and carry comfortably for me anyways.

I was thinking this was a simple DA/SA with a safety. Much like the Taurus 709 and similars but with a hammer. But the video shows it can be carried in SA with the safety on, or decocked in DA. I am pretty interested in it now.

Anybody get their emails?? They sent me a spam email marketing the new pistol... this is what it said:

The low-effort slide practically racks itself, so handling’s a pleasure.
The exposed hammer clearly shows gun mode, and the single/double action trigger shows respect for your shooting style, unlike other compacts.

New shooter or skilled gunner, wrap your mitt around the new
XD-E™ and you’ll know. This is more than a hammer.

It redefines what your hammer should be.

WHAT THE F-WORD???

They have the dumbest marketing people. First the whole "saint and defend your legacy nonsense"... now this hammer and tool crap. And what kinda grammar is "gun mode"... is it like GripZone?? I feel like the CEO lets his teenage daughter do the marketing and proofreading... #gun#omg#gunmode

Oh by the way, Springfield just sold their soul to the Illinois government to screw local and small FFLs... look it up.

And here I almost bought another XD45.... NOPEEEE

Don't forget the px4 subcompact.

Don't forget LCP, including LCP II. But yes, they are all DAO guns. Well, there was a Kimber 1911 with a polymer frame, but they stopped making that one a while ago. And that one was a standard 1911 otherwise, so it didn't have a decocker.

It is strange indeed. The XD-S itself keeps racking complaints about its pudginess, in comparisons with Shield and G43, and they just went and did this. Could as well use an aluminum frame at this point.

The most intriguing part for me is where it is made. If Springfield has gained a production capacity for themselves that can make polymer frame pistols, they should be able to go back to a striker-fired gun in a short order (on XDe platform, like SIG did with P320 based on P250 -- so HS Produkt can't say anything). Or, make a small .380 that is prohibited for importation otherwise.

BTW... The barrel is numbered to the gun. What's up with that? Is that another Illinois thing or what? What are the implications for this, does it prevent 3-rd party replacement barrels?

I wouldn't mind a 4" barrel, but I don't see why they didn't make the single-stack barrels all 3.5".

I do like that this one is slightly taller than the XDs, which was just a smidge too short for a comfortable grip for me, and I have small fingers.

I don't know that it's for me as I prefer striker fired guns, but can see the benefit for those favoring a hammer.

On another note, I live in the Chicago area and will be impacted by the pending legislation that will make it difficult for LGS' here. I spoke with Springfield's customer service regarding them withdrawing their opposition to this bill and was told there's more to the story than what's being reported. She asked me to check their web site in about a week, as more information will be available then. I'm hoping they're smart enough not to throw LGS' under the bus and will hold off judgement for now.

The de-cocker kills it for me. DA only is fine. DA/SA with a safety is fine, but a de-cocker is a killer.

off topic but the ceo made a statement on it. not impressed.
back on topic...the hammer is what is attractive to me the most on this pistol. the shorter barrel is a deal killer for me though. decocker or not i kinda like hammers, but like strikers too.

While the XD-E probably won't be a huge seller, it will totally dominate its segment. There are literally zero compact, single stack, DA/SAs in 9mm. Other pistols like the HK P30, CZ Rami and Beretta PX4sc are double stack.

Maybe sell plenty in Californica...if Jerry says it's okay.

Appears to be my dream CCW. Single stack, DA/SA w/decocker, polymer, ambi, reasonable texture and no grooves. If these turn out well I must have. Kinda pissed I just bought a P938 as compromise.
