Springfield Armory XD-E

I'm interested. I'll wait to see how things go with the pistol at first before indulging as I've been burned by new designs before. I'm not interested in helping the company fix their design oversights.

I like the idea of the decocker.

I've had a hammer get away from me once causing a discharge when practicing double action shooting with a DA/SA semi-auto. Fortunately, only the dirt in front of me was harmed and it was done in the privacy of my back yard range. A decocker would have prevented the problem.

If they made this in a service-size (4-4.5" barrel, double-stack mag of 15 rounds or so) I'd be interested. Sort of a lower-priced HK P30 competitor. I've always loved the concept of a single lever for both decocking and safety.

Pardon my ignorance but can you tell me why?
I hate de-cockers, simple as that. Personal preference. Hammer falls, it should shoot. Need to de-cock it? My thumb works just fine.

You like them? That's cool too. Lots of folks do. :)

I'm quite interested to see this thing in person. I'm a sucker for single stack 9mms, and there aren't a whole lot of DA/SA models out there. I was debating getting a Sig P225, but this is much less $ and I'm assuming it'll be a quality product, but am anxious to see what the trigger pull is like.

The 239 is a great gun, but it's pricey for what it is, and now that the 225 has been resurrected, a slow seller.

I'll check it out as well. There seems to be a quiet resurgence in interest for hammer fired pistols. There's more and more people viewing them as safer to re-holster vs. safetyless pistols with short light trigger pulls.

Wow, DA/SA coming back? Shows that what goes around comes around.

To the question regarding serial numbering the barrel to the receiver, that's a not uncommon practice for many manufacturers. It's generally seen as a guarantee that the barrel has been "mated" to a specific firearm, hence conveying a sense of hand fit quality. However, with most mass produced pistols these days everything is modular and you can bet these barrels drop in one just like any other. I'm guessing in this case it's more of a marketing attempt to capitalize on the sense that having the barrel numbered to the frame will convey a sense of quality.

Anybody get their emails?? They sent me a spam email marketing the new pistol... this is what it said:

WHAT THE F-WORD???

They have the dumbest marketing people. First the whole "saint and defend your legacy nonsense"... now this hammer and tool crap. And what kinda grammar is "gun mode"... is it like GripZone?? I feel like the CEO lets his teenage daughter do the marketing and proofreading... #gun#omg#gunmode

Oh by the way, Springfield just sold their soul to the Illinois government to screw local and small FFLs... look it up.

And here I almost bought another XD45.... NOPEEEE

I wouldn't criticise someone's grammar if I were you.

I'm pretty sure my grammar is sufficient for an informal forum post. What's annoying is their website and emails have issues, or at least very odd phrasing... While their press release and journalist presentations have the errors fixed. So it's as if they are publishing information in stages as well as not fixing all errors in all places.

Trust me, if I were to send something out to millions that had money riding on it, I'd make sure it would be perfect. After all, I have been published in scientific journals.

Additionally, the gun still has "Grip Zone" on it. Don't they get trolled enough by it? I'll probably buy a Springfield again, but I'd like them to make better business/marketing decisions first.

Interesting design but not anything I would be inclined to purchase. Quite happy with my DAO Kahr CM9.

Got a kick out of the video, "27% easier to rack!" I am wondering how they arrived at that interesting statistic...
I'd try one out, of course, looks interesting enough to shoot. :)

This design is really tempting, but like some previous posters the marketing is a huge turn-off.

I don't want my hard earned dollars to support the idiots that stamp "grip zone" on the gun and then refer to the hammer as a "gun mode" indicator...

4-5oz lighter would be nice, but not a deal breaker.

I am glad they label the grip zone. Many times I come across a pistol and have no idea where/how to hold it. Ever try to fire a semi-auto while holding it by the slide?

/sarcasm

Hammer fired pistols can have a lighter recoil spring because you don't have to pre-tension the striker when you pull back the slide. I read in another thread that a striker XD has around a 20 pound recoil spring so this XD-E has around a 16 pound spring.

The older grenade texture that came from the XDm iterations is not as good, I think.

Grenade my butt... its straight from a waffle iron. only thing intriguing is that I could use my 8/9rd XDs mags in it... That said, I have zero interest in adding another poly pistol.

Interesting gun for me since I like DA/SA with a de-cocker. The LCI is something I don't like. It is a pain to clean the breech face with the LCI cut into the breech face.

A solution in search of a problem.

How so? It has a very similar DA/SA system as the HK USP, one of the best selling HK firearms ever. The XD-E is much smaller and less expensive than a USP, not to mention lighter. So it could fill a nice niche.

I like DA/SA guns and I'm glad to see another company getting into that market, but I don't think I'll be buying one; I'm pretty well set with what I have and I don't care for the appearance of the XD series. But I hope they sell a boatload of them.

I disagree, and I believe they will sell well. As I posted earlier, if it didn't have a de-cocker, and was DA/SA with a safety, or simply DAO, I would be interested in giving one a test run.

It is interesting to learn different folks' wants and desires in a pistol. It is important to be comfortable with the pistol's operation.

I'm not comfortable with striker fired pistols without a manual safety but a decocker on a hammer fired pistol is ok for me. It does not mean some one else's comfort level is wrong, just different from my comfort level.

It is good that the firearm manufacturers provide us with options.

I'm hoping Sig takes notice and releases a DA/SA variant of their 938.

I will definitely be taking a close look at the XD-E.

While the XD-E probably won't be a huge seller, it will totally dominate its segment. There are literally zero compact, single stack, DA/SAs in 9mm. Other pistols like the HK P30, CZ Rami and Beretta PX4sc are double stack.
Sig 225A1.

Springfield Armory has just released its XD-E. I'm guessing that the "E" stands for "external," as in "external hammer." That's purely a guess, though.

At first glance, it looks like a Mod 2 XD-S in 9mm with an exposed hammer:

The gold standard for CCP is the Glock 26. On paper this appears to weigh more than G26. To add insult to injury it will cost more than S&W Shield and is made outside of USA. Fail.
