Consistent with past practice, the Department of Public Safety and the Division of Student Development issue bulletins throughout the academic year when occurrences compromise the safety and security of individuals within our community.
THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS AN UPDATE TO THE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED AT AN APARTMENT ON EAST ******* STREET DURING THE EVENING HOURS OF MARCH 9, 2009. THE CAMPUS EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM WAS ACTIVATED AT THAT TIME TO APPRISE THE COMMUNITY OF THE SITUATION.
Three suspects entered a university-owned apartment on East ******* Street after being admitted to the building by occupants believing they were there for a food delivery. Upon entry the suspects displayed a rifle and pistol and demanded money from the two residents. One of the suspects assaulted a resident, injuring him. The injured student was treated at an area hospital and released last night. The suspects then took some of the occupants’ belongings and fled the apartment.
Witnesses reported the three suspects fled the area in a large, dark car with tinted windows. They described the car as a full-sized sedan, possibly a Chevrolet Impala or Buick.
The students described the suspects as three African-American males, all 18-22 years of age:
1) 5’11” tall, corn row hairstyle, carrying a rifle
2) 5’5” tall, corn row hairstyle, no weapon displayed
3) 5’4” tall, light beard, carrying a black semi-automatic handgun
University of ****** and ****** Police Department officers canvassed the surrounding neighborhood and interviewed witnesses regarding this incident. The University of ****** Police Department and ****** Police Department are continuing their investigation into this incident and will continue to follow any additional leads. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT STUDENTS IMMEDIATELY REPORT ANY ACTIVITY THAT CREATES A POTENTIAL THREAT TO THE COMMUNITY. WE RELY HEAVILY ON EYEWITNESSES TO KEEP OUR CAMPUS SAFE.
We ask each of you to consider your personal safety at all times. Please make sure that your windows and doors are locked at all times, particularly before retiring or when leaving your residence. Whenever possible do not walk or jog alone. Either make arrangements to walk with someone or use the Department of Public Safety Escort Service, available at ***-****. Should you see any person committing an offense against another person or acting suspiciously, please contact our offices immediately by calling 911 from any campus phone or by calling ***-**** from any off-campus phone or cellular telephone . Additional information concerning crime prevention and personal safety can be found at the Department of Public Safety Home Page.
DANGIT people! When will you get it through your head that "Gun Free Zones" don't work? Walking outside and fearing attack by three freaks while not being allowed to carry? I hate it. I know I am preaching to the choir, but come on people!
