Does anyone use/recommend subsonic ammo out of a handgun for deer hunting within 50 yards? A friend of mine is letting me hunt his property and it's the legal 200yards away from his neighbors structures but I'd like to be respectful of the neighbors as well as the animal. Any thoughts?

Will you be using a suppressor? If not, his neighbors will still know perfectly well that you are shooting on account of the muzzle blast.

Also, what cartridge are you asking about?

I will not be using a suppressor. And I should have mention there are horse farms on both sides so I was concerned about spooking the animals. I wasn't sure about which ammo to use. That's why I was asking. As far as caliber, 9mm or .45

Michigan law concerning deer hunting
• A conventional (smokeless powder) handgun must be .35 caliber or larger and
loaded with straight-walled cartridges and may be single- or multiple-shot but
cannot exceed a maximum capacity of nine rounds in the barrel and
magazine combined
.

So a single-stack 7+1 .45 would probably be best.

Its already subsonic.

I say 45 acp would work. I have killed a couple pigs with mine. To me with my skills 50 yards would too long of a long shot. I know my limits with my pistol is about 30-35 yards.

I thought straight wall excluded semi auto cartridges, it does in Minnesota, only .357 and up is legal here. I would never shoot a deer with a 9 MM and have doubts about a .45 ACP even if legal.

I've used a 300blk/300 whisper with a 220 gr bullet. Taken several deer with one, at 50yrds its a "no brainer" for shot placement.

mine is more of a rifle platform but it makes you wonder, seems a 230gr 45ACP at 1050fps would do the same damage. except the 300 bullet is a lot longer and tends to yaw once hitting the animal. does a surprising amount of damage. Ive known plenty of guys in years past who have taken down deer with a 22lr and "earholed" them. i'd say its mostly about shot placement. I would not feel comfortable with a 9mm but I cant hit a deer head sized target at 50yards with it.

if you are concerned about neighbors and don't have a can, consider a crossbow if legal.

45acp is considered straightwall by everyone at atf and michigan, but doent meet case length.

It is my understanding that they mean not bottlenecked.

I think the OP should get a copy of the Michigan hunting regs and find out what it means in his home state himself!

Even if he has to call a local F&G office to interpret it.

Thats what I would for sure do myself before going deer hunting with an illegal hunting weapon!

He can get in a Heap-A-Trouble otherwise!
