Thinking of getting another AR while they are cheap

figure 50 years? the awb was 1994. it's 2019 today. obama was elected in 2008, and dems have controlled the house and senate since then, so doesn't even look like 20 years.

The Democrats lost approximately 50 years worth of control when they lost all of those House seats. They lost a ~50 year majority.

FYI The Republicans are the Senate majority currently and have been for some time now.

And which political figures overturned the AWB? That’s right, and it wasn’t political suicide for them not to, they backed away from the issue and both sides won and lost control of Congress afterward. Our saving grace was that Pandora’s Box had a close on date.

I wouldn't call the sunset "overturning" anything. It simply expired and no one pushed the issue (likely because they didn't want to lose their jobs too).

If uppers are outlawed there will be thousands of clandestine home machinists who would be making them in their basements. Barrels also. Many LEO's would be those guys who would turn a blind eye to those home machinists because they believe in the Bill of Rights in it's current form as much as anyone. Outlawing uppers may be law on paper but not possessing marijuana was and is also banned. Not making moonshine is also banned but it's done. The leftists fed's can do all they want to suppress the Constitution but I know Americans well enough that they do not want to end up like Hong Kong. We Americans like machines and an AR is a machine. We like taking a chunk of steel or aluminum and making something. They aren't going away anytime soon.

Personally, Just my opinion, if you are not 21, you cannot buy a center fire semi auto. You can build one but not buy one. We do something similar with Alcohol and hand guns. After 32 years as an LEO some folks do not have the right mind set to own an AR or any firearm safely. This keeps the AR's out of the hands of unsupervised amateurs. It's a road block but not outlawing them. Just my opinion. kwg

I am not so sure you would see home machinists making uppers. I base this on the fact that there are not massive numbers of illegal modifications presently being made to semi automatics to convert them to full automatics.

Buying lowers when the future availability of uppers is not certain seems like a risky bet to me.

I don't think there will be much clandestine production of AR's (uppers, lowers, barrels) if they are banned. I base this opinion on two things:

1. The supply of existing guns is so large that there will be no need to produce more. The existing ones will just change hands in the underground economy.
2. If the need arose to produce new guns, it would be much simpler to make Sten-type SMG's than elaborately-machined AR's.

Maybe we’re all drifting a bit too much from the topic. Balrog, if you like your Colt there are plenty of points to be made for buying a second one.

If you trust S&W to be around for service they’re a viable option, but my opinion on that; I think they’re really struggling right now between T/Cs that no one is buying, revolvers that are priced beyond much market demand, M&Ps splintering off into Shields/Bodyguards/2.0s- I’m seeing warning signs so maybe consider that if service is a concern.

Ruger has some of the best service of any company I have dealt with to date. Do I like the non-typical parts of their ARs? No, not really but my prejudice stems from lack of familiarity rather than experience.

PSA is still where my browser wanders back to time after time and I don’t have any reason as yet why they won’t continue to be my source for inexpensive rifles that run.

Agree. Check out what is on the market and buy accordingly. Buy what you can afford and buy what fits your personal mission. Not everyone's mission is the same.
