Howdy, folks. Now, since there aren't a lot of LEOs on THR, everyone can answer for the LEOs in the place where they live (if they know). What do you carry as your primary sidearm, your "heavy weapon" and BUG (if you have a BUG)? Do you get to choose or is it issued to you?

I'm not an LEO, but in Oceanside, every officer I've seen in Oceanside, CA has a Glock (unknown model #/caliber) on their hip.

In my hometown where I grew up, the police/sheriff's deputies carry a gun approved by the chief of police/sheriff on their hips and either an M16/AR, Lever action 30-30 of some kind, or a pump shotgun of some kind. If they didn't have a sidearm, they'd be issued a .357 revolver (smith and wesson no clue on model). BUGs are optional and not issued.

I am not an LEO, but in my city and county the police and sheriff's officers are both allowed to carry a back up, but it is not required. The city police have to qualify with the backup. Some carry a Glock 27 to back up their 22, others carry a snubbie, a few carry micro guns in .25.

Now, since there aren't a lot of LEOs on THR...
Really? As in, there are proportionally fewer LEOs on THR than there are LEOs in the general population?

I'd think it would be the other way arround. :)

Fargo, ND = Glock 22, M4gery in the vehicle

West Fargo, ND = Glock 21

Moorhead, MN = Glock 17

Diplomatic Security Service = SIG 228 in .40, Colt 9mm M4

Military Police = Beretta 92fs (M-9)

Border Patrol = HK P2000 LEM in .40

Mansfield la K-9 unit =Glock22
Shreveport K-9 Unit=Glock 22
Bossier city PD =Glock 22
Caddo Sheriff Dep=Glock 22
Mid South Security=Glock22
Some Security= 38 Special

For one local department the issue sidearm is a P220, on-person BUGs are allowed but not provided. ARs allowed but not provided. I dont know about shotguns, they're allowed, but I dont know if they're provided.

I dont know about SWAT, or plainclothes LEOs. I dont know any.

Washington DC MPD has Glock 17s, 19s and if your lucky/BUG/off duty a Glock 26. The mayor's protective detail has Sig 226s (everything so far in 9mm). The FBI guys have Glocks in .40, the Secret Service P229s in .357 SIG, Housing Authority has HK USPs in 9mm.

CT State Police has Sigs, locals near me have Glock 17s and 19s

as far as heavier weapons, it varies by department, but obviously they have shotguns and ARs available if the situations warrented it

NW Arkansas, majority of the PD's around here are Glock 17, 19, 22 and 23. Bug is allowed by some, usually officer supplied. My PD allows part timers to carry whatever they can qualify with so long as it's a quality manufacturer (no Hi-Points, etc.). Shotguns and M4geries as long arms. Washington county sheriff is Glock 22, Benton County is Sig 220 or 226 in .40 cal.

Denver PD. We have a choice of a list of pistols, in 9mm or .45.

I carry a nicely customized Colt 1911 (set up to be as close to my STI Limited gun as possible). Backup is a Centennial Airweight.

Certain Officers carry Remington 870 12 ga. Others (who have been blessed by the administration), myself included, have an AR-15. Mine's a Colt, and they recently authorized M&P ARs.

An interesting note: A friend of mine who is vacationing in Italy this week emailed me this morning to tell me, "The police over here all carry Glock 9mm!". I guess he was expecting to see a lot of Berettas...I kinda expected Tanfoglio would be popular there.

Retired now but my last duty weapon was a colt double eagle in .38 super.
Several of the older guys still carry the Colt .45 single
the young pups around here are predominantly Sigs with a few glocks thrown in
Hell, I still see the occasional Smith or colt revolver, but those are usually confined to the station pinkies.
Central oklahoma region.

Morgan already covered it, but from what I know, Denver PD allows any 9mm or .45 caliber Glock, including GAP. This kind of suprised me considering the Glock 22's popularity in law enforcement.

Broomfield PD (suburb of Denver) does 9mm, .40, and .45ACP Glocks, but I have talked to one officer who carried a Kimber 1911 that he bought when working for a different department which required officers to buy their own sidearm. A "plain-clothes" Broomfield officer (wearing a Broomfield PD polo shirt) carries a Sub-compact Glock as his sidearm.

My neck of the woods: (Western WA)
King County Sheriff's Office: G22
Pierce Co Sheriff's Office: (G22 issue, different sidearms authorized)
City of Tacoma, WA: G22, Kimber 1911 (issued), AR's in the trunk.
Us: G22 (Issue), other firearms authorized. Backup authorized but not provided. Armalite carbines issued.

Me: Colt Enhanced 1911 (primary) G27 (backup) Colt LE 6920 (AR); Savage 10FP .308 w/ Burris 6-24x50 XTR in drag bag/mat, 2 Harris bipods, spare ammo and data book.

Dept: Puyallup Tribal Police

Oh, I don't know about that. It seems to me that a good number of the boys in blue really aren't gunnies as much as they are guys that happen to carry a gun. Maybe our resident LEO's will tell you differently (and if I am wrong, please do correct me), but I bet you would be surprised at how many cops aren't really interested in guns past what the job requires.

1911 or Glock 21. Both Personally owned. Very liberal carry policy.
Issued M16 or personal M4A3
Benelli M4 or personal Rem. 870
S+W 637 or Kel tec PF9

I was surprised by the number of cops who had never shot before the academy and are not "gun people". As recruitment fell, they started looking outside of traditional circles, for better or worse.

I work in Colorado.

I carry a Glock 37 as a duty weapon, a knife as a backup weapon, and an AR-15 as a go-to weapon when I have time to choose what I am bringing to a fight.

Off duty I carry a mini-glock.

Albany NY...city cops carry a smith and wesson 40 cal(not sure the model)but it has like 15lb trigger.....because apparently you want to make it as hard as possible to hit the bad guy....

Local PD: Sig P229 in .45ACP and tazer on person with M4 in the vehicle supervisor has Remington 870 Less-Lethal
Local Sheriffs: Glock 23 .40S&W and tazer on person can use approved rifle or assault rifle if not Shotgun in vehicle
Local PD and Sheriff SWAT Teams : HK MP5 and Colt M4's with issued Side Arms, various launchers and less lethal weapons, Marksmen rifles are in .308

first, you would be suprised at how many leo's there are on this board. second, if you type in under advanced search "leo back up, origially posted by me, you will find a LOT of interesting BUG reading!

I ahve to agree about the fact that a lot of cops arent really as gun active as they should be.
Surprisingly, even cops with a military stint seem to be oh well....in attitude,
But I think from my observation its maybe 50/50 on that count

Concerning the new generation of cops.............when I sat on the hiring board there was one question I would always ask....and loved the fidgeting also and the asinine answers

"When you were in school, win , loose, or draw, were you ever in a fist fight????

Physical violence in this line of work is a given. Ya gotta be able to take a hit and shake it off. And not pull your asap, pr24 or stick and club em down

My gawd, I had one applicant actually say she was opposed to any form of VIOLENCE, she only wanted to do "crime scene" work. That little hot house flower didn't come into the the fold.

Well, I must say its a young mans game and Im glad there are still young MEN who are willing to step up so I could step down. That round to the leg was a tad much.

Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio PD carry the new S&W M&P 40 caliber. Ohio Highway Patrol carry a SigSauer P226, 40 caliber.
