Unusual LEO sidearms?

When he carried a sidearm, the former Chief at my Dept started out carrying a Walther PPK/S, saying that he wouldn't ever need it so he got something small and light (of course, no spare mags). Later, he replaced it with a Sauer M30 in .32 that had been confiscated in a drug raid, saying it was even lighter (again, no spare mag, only the one in the weapon). It's still in the safe at the Station from when he retired, if requested I can try and get some pics.

Info and pic for Sauer M30:

A local constable carries a 9mm Sigma.

I also saw a county deputy (debbidy) sherriff that had a Colt Gold Cup...sweet!

A dept. sherriff serving baliff duty for the county was carrying a well-used Ruger Security (or Speed?) Six. That was last May (05/07). The gun isn't so odd, but to see an officer carry a revolver these days is a bit unusual.

Last but not least, a buddy of mine on HPD carries an old Smith 5900-series with one mag and no BUG. I've offered to let him carry my SP101, but he's declined. He bought a new service Glock .40 instead of a BUG :scrutiny:. Not so smart these days in H-town.

"that guy should not be on the streets"- TAB

Because of his choice of sidearm? At least he is out there, and if he chooses to trust that weapon, that's up to him.

no, not becuase of his choice of side arms, but becuase of

I asked about that, and he said that carrying anything heavier hurt his back

if carrying a couple extra lbs on your belt every day makes your back hurt, your not healthy enough to be on patrol.

Chinese policewoman in an HK train station carried a big ole Norinco .357. Every other police person I saw carried a Makarov copy.

Wow- at least that guy is out there, serving. People have various back troubles. You never know- he could have had scoliosis or soemthing like that.

I kinda agree. I mean, he does have to wrestle drunks and such. Or maybe he's the Brass, REMF type, then I reckon he can carry whatever he darned well pleases.

I have 4 pins and 3 fused vertebra, does not stop me from wearing a tool belt that is over 20 lbs 5-7 days a week. Not to mention getting tools out of the back of the truck/ trailer of which the lightest is 96 lbs.

So I know all about back pain.

If he can't carry a full size gun with out being in pain, he should not be on the street.

edit I just did some looking a unloaded ppk is 20.4 oz and 24.6 oz loaded( 6 rounds of 380). a glock 17 is 22.4 oz with out a mag and 31.91 oz loaded with 17 rounds of 9 mm. assuming he has one extra mag there is a 10 oz diffrences in the two. i won't even get into things like round count.

Oweno, I would have carried an Astra 600 just to piss off the chief:) Hey,it's a 9x19! If they meant ANY 9mm, maybe I'd carry one of my Astra 400's in 9mm Largo with a Makarov as a backup!

Not cops but I knew an armored car guard that carried a .44mag desert eagle! And another carried a J frame S&W .357 as a primary!

We should start an unusual security guard gun thread. One I knew carried a Super Redhawk .44mag until the boss told him to knock it off!

Odd guns that I have seen carried:

WALTHER P-88, an officer I worked with traded his SIG 226 and $300.00 for a WALTHER. I asked him why and he pointed out the WALTHER was ambidextrous while the SIG was not (he was left handed).

H&K P-9, I met a U.S. Customs Special Agent who carried an H&K P-9 in .45ACP.

WALTHER P-5, an I&NS Examiner who conducted Immigration Inspection on the weekend carried a WALTHER P-5 9m.m.

About 35 years ago, I met a security guard who carried a .25ACP as his belt gun.

As someone who has back troubles, you should know that the seats in a vehicle can effect your back. Especially if you carry a thick wallet in your back pocket, or a handgun on your hip.

I know all about back pain too, although I wont clame to know as much as you since I dont have anything pinned or fused. But, I could see why switching to a different gun could help with back pain, especially if he's stuck in a car most of the day. If I'm going to be driving more than 45 minutes my wallet gets put in the door of my car. My pistol doenst bother me though, unless I'm in the lady's escort.

While my department only required .38 or bigger at the time, and you had to purchase your own duty weapon, once the semiauto's became popular, I carried a S&W 645 when everyone else was getting 659's. Only because Sonny Crockett carried one and I could say mine was bigger....

BUT, when my back went bad, I carried a Glock 19 with an extended grip magazine for the primary and the two smaller mags for my reloads. It was accurate, light, still carried lots of rounds and was light.

The local small town PD is big on Glocks (can't tell what caliber, probably .40 tho), but two officers stand out.

One is a gorgeous young lady bicycle cop who has fine legs and a .45 ACP HK USP. The other is a veteran cop with a BEAUTIFULLY polished stainless Beretta 92 with Hogue finger groove grips.

Got a serious crush on Ms. USP45. :)

When I first hired on, the issue was a Smith Model 10 Heavy Barrel, but we could carry whatever we could qualify with.

Over the years I've carried:
Smith 64 Pencil Barrel
Smith 19
Smith 66
Smith 58
Smith 57
Smith 29 Nickle Plated
Colt Series 70
Colt Combat Elite
Glock 17 (first run imported)
Glock 19
Glock 30
Smith 625 Mountain Gun

Once I showed up in the assistant chief's office with a new Colt SAA. I asked him, "If I qualify with it, can I carry it?"

He looked at me with narrowed eyes, rubbed his chin and said, "No...you'd probably do it!"

We finally transitioned to the Glock 22 and are required to carry it on duty.

It's a good gun, but I sure miss the good old days.

If it was still that way, my new gun of choice would be the new Redhawk 4" in 45 Colt.

In my hometown....

The Sheriff didn't carry a gun. He was a good ole boy, knew everyone in town and pretty much ran it in his folksy style. Lived with his aunt and son and was just a plain nice guy.

His deputy, kind of a squirrely guy had a revolver, a Smith Model 10, I think. They wouldn't let him have bullets in it as he was likely enough to shoot his own fool foot off. He did keep a bullet in his shirt pocket though.

A local small-town Police Chief carried a Colt Delta Elite stainless in 10mm (he's since retired)....

I saw a city police officer on the Oregon Coast carrying a CZ75.... or maybe it was one of the Italian-made versions....

An older Security Gaurd I worked with carried a Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless in .32... seriously!!!!

Many years ago, one of our Deputy sherrif's carried a Ruger Single-Six in .22 mag!

Once saw an plainclothes in Colorado (I think??) packing a nice Luger p08.

There was a Houston police sergeant who worked after hours security at the building where the oil company I worked for had their offices. He carried the Taurus clone of the Beretta 96 and loved it. We are talking a serious LEO here, had been an instructor at the academy, had a bunch of decorations, was not young but in really good shape. A nice guy to talk to as well.

When I lived in Alpine in the '80s there was a Brewster County sheriff who used to carry a very small semiauto in an SOB holster. I'm pretty sure it was a .25 ACP or maybe even .22 LR from the size- this was the pre-Seecamp, pre-NAA, pre-Keltec era.

I saw a Sheriff out in Ennis packing a SAA. He had a really nice gunbelt and foral carved holster to go with it.
