Underage Posession of Firearms

For starters, I am 19 years old as of 22 minutes ago.

I own more than a few long guns, and am usually pretty well versed in gun laws, but it occurred to me that I am unaware of the laws concerning ownership of a handgun my a minor. (an under 21, over 18 type of minor) I am aware that I can't carry it, but is it legal for me to simply own a handgun, or use it on private property? I am also aware that i can't BUY one from a dealer, but can I posess it? Also, is it legal to purchase a handgun from a private citizen instead of a dealer? I am really wanting to add a 1911 to my stash. I am a Georgia resident, if that information is relevant.
 
In my state I believe you can have a handgun at 18 but you can't own it.

IE somone between 18 and 21 could go to the range by themselves and even open carry, but they need permission from the owner, so you could just take a piece of paper that states the person who owns the gun is giving you permission to use it.
 
Sounds good. Now, to talk mom into buying my a 1911! (which I'll be taking home, unloaded and locked, of course. Thanks for the info!
 
Or find a private party that will sell to you direct. I've sold handguns to an 18-20yo before. When I get my FFL, that will change, even for personal firearms.
