Been, sir you have received a number of excellent suggestions and some that were a little off base, but listen to me a classic 20th century wheel gun is what you MUST have. There are fewer and fewer of them for sale and soon anything worth owning will be in the hands of private collectors, or if you can find anything decent for sale it will have a 5 figure price tag attached to it.

Don't think about it just do it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Basically, i'm all out of reasons to buy a new gun other than want.

Yeah. So. And your point here is? Want is all the reason you need isn't it? I mean it is for me.

"I have all the bases covered"

Yeah, right. I've got a safe full and I don't have all the bases covered. Let's just run down a few basic firearms: Rifle for highpower matches, bullseye pistol-one centerfire and one rimfire, Silhouette rifle, 3 position rimfire rifle, prone rimfire rifle, skeet gun, trap gun, 10 meter rifle, 10 meter pistol.....that's a good start anyway, you can always add a benchrest rifle in both center and rimfire, maybe a Palma or class F rifle. I haven't even broken the surface yet..........

Thanx, Russ

Since nobody has mentioned one and you collect Milsurps, how about a Krag-Jorgensen? In U.S. Springfield (.30-40), you can lay hands on one for $500--$1000, in shooting condition.

Want a Holy Grail? The Danes mfd. and issued Krags until 1940, when the Germans marched in. The Germans appropriated them and issued them to what we would call REMF's, but there was a supply problem.

Danish Krags were chambered in 8mm x 58R which, of course, wouldn't work with the German 7.92mm x 57JS round. The Grail part? The Germans managed to get a bunch of Danish Krags chambered for 8mm Mauser.

I'm guessing that more than one of these ended up as USGI bringback, especially when you consider that some National Guard units were still armed with the 30-40 Krags well into the '30s and Color Guards had them chromed and used them, well, maybe they're still using them. It's not like chromed ceremonial rifles wear out. (My point here is that a whole bunch of USGI's knew WHAT a Krag was.)

Not only were they re-chambered in 8mm Mauser, more of them were done in .30-06 and .308 after the war, clear into the '50s. There is one proviso here--don't try this with Great-Grandaddy's Phillipine Insurrection 30-40. European Krags have two locking lugs on the bolt, U.S. Springfields, only one.

Well, there it is--a fairly easy-to-find Milsurp, beautifully machined and ammo availability (.30-40 Krag), and a Holy Grail--8mm Mauser Krag (or .30-06 or .308 if you want something REALLY rare.).

Gook Luck and Good Shooting--

ed

P.S.

Sgt. Schultz of Hogan' Heroes fame carried a Krag. The actual weapon was a U.S. Springfield, but my guess is that it's use was based on prop availability, and was supposed to be the Dane.

If you like two tone blued and stainless, check out the Colt Combat Elite for a very nice, non-tacticooled (in my view) 1911.

oh the "want" is there. Unfortunately so is the "what".

Feel free to let me help you out.

I have the "want". I have the "what" (actually a couple of them). Unfortunately I don't have the how without dipping into savings. And with work being as slow as it is, I'm not doing that.

:DSo here's my proposition... You send me your "how", and I'll take care of the rest.:D How's that sound? Good deal, huh?:D

:evil::evil::evil::evil::evil:
But seriously, more milsurps? There's a lot out there besides the Garand and 1911A1. Arisakas, Mausers, Lugers. My favorites of my milsurps are the Ljundmann AG-42b and my SVT-40.

How 'bout antiques? Not neccesarily blackpowder. Old Winchesters, Marlins, Trapdoors, Colts and S&Ws. As long as you take care of them, they'll never go down in value. And it's pure enjoyment shooting a 120+ year old Winchester.

Or you could go into blackpowder repros? Those are a lot of fun also. The highly smoke is addictive.

Have you taken the dive into NFA yet?

Its been mentioned about blackpowder. Everyone should have a muzzleloader or three and cap and ball revolvers too.
As far as bases covered, what if something breaks on one of what you have and you need parts quick or something else to use that ammo. Better have two of everything. :)
And then there are all those different calibers too.
What if the end of the world came and you were scavenging for ammo and could only find "blah-blah" and had nothing it would fit? :)
Why your bases aren't covered at all, yet.

It appears everyone has missed the boat...........

Beeenbag, start the process on your first suppressor. Once that bug hits you'll 'need' one for every caliber you shoot.

I too missed the boat.

Ammunition, a safe way to store it, and make it, would seem to be a decent thought.

Unwinding the Bill Of Rights has, historically, proven to be troublesome. Poll Taxes, seperate but equal doctrine, 'Grandfather Clauses, and such have been discounted by Civil Rights workers.

Newer Constitutional attacks are a different breed of critter.

Now, the attacks seem to come from heads of civil agencies who are not subject to election or public scrutiny. AMA, PTA, AARP, Justice Dept, CDC, EPA, US Surgeon General (remember Ms Clinton's first Appointee?), and so on.

Just saying, the tough sledding is likely to get tougher and less obvious.

Funny your post is similar to mine, and I'm leaning twords a Kimber cdp2, or crimson trace, although there is a "new" kimber out that is a bit higher priced I think it's a custom carry pro or somthing, look on the Kimber website. It's a beauty if you llike the rapture look. I am leaning to the CT, only for the laser grips. But I do like the CDP2 a lot also with NS. The ct is about the least expensive of the ones I mentioned also. But they are costlly. I don't see losing a lot on one of them if you take care of it you should be able to hand it down to you son or another family member and it will make you smile every time you look at it. Not like the refrigerator my wife wants.

Determine what is your most favorite if youhad to boil down to a few firearms. Then, buy a duplicate of it plus spare parts. Then, store it somewhere safely and secure other than at home.

I've reached a stall-point, too. Even with the economy the way it is, very few of the folks in my area are putting their guns up for sale. Even the new stuff is getting snapped up at retail price or better. Maybe it has some connection the hot war going on in Reynosa which is all of ten miles away. Even the local police have been getting involved, teaming up with one gang or the other and buying guns for them.

And the local gun show was canceled, too.

So nothing interesting is currently on the horizon.

Save your money. When something catches your eye then buy it. It doesn't have to be a gun. Why not take the money and get a motorcycle or learn to scuba dive. Or invest it. Take a trip.

If you don't see anything you want, don't buy anything, otherwise you are just wasting money. You might be walking down the street one day and "DING" it pops in to your head that you want an all original Mossberg 44 US with a factory installed lyman scope, or maybe new side pipes, but you just burned your money on a K98 that you bought because you felt you HAD to buy something.

He's right it becomes just a matter of logic at some point. I just went through the same thing, and am back to square 1. I have had all those guns already and they didn't do anything that was any different than what I currentlly have in my safe. Buying just for the sake of buying is always a bad idea. Take a trip, go to Vegas with your buddys or maybe a new flat screen 3d. You don't have to buy another gun unless you have a reason for it. Buy the girlfriend or wife a nice piece of jewelry, that will give you 6 months of leisure and pleasure. Be a hero. another gun is just another gun, unless you really want it, if you don't shoot rifles maybe an AR is the change of pace you need. Or a nice rolex mariner. It dosen't have to be a gun. unless you have a use for this new gun, it's just a substitute for a place to park some cash,
