What Gun For Bears?

375 A.I. Mg Arms from Back of the Safe. Blew the dust off. Had it made for a trip to Africa Years ago. Jewel trigger and Exceptionally accurate. 1/4” Groups at 100- No Bs. Just don’t have anything big enough around here for it. Used it on a Buck not long ago…. worked Extremely well with controlled expansion Barnes Triple Shock.

58 “Kodiak”

with the problematic issue of ammo nowadays I am glad I chose long ago .22lr & 9mm and 5.56 and 7.62 and 30-06 so take you pick 7.62 or 30-06 not excluding the 12 gauge shot gun though

Doesn't take much to kill a bear ,I've killed them here in montana ,ny maine, wyoming, colorado and idaho with calibers rangeing from 22-250 to 338 rums from 80 yards out to 600yards take out the vitals they won't go far doesnt take a shoulder thumping 30 cal to kill a bear
I know a gentleman that killed an interior Alaska grizzly with a 280AI @180 yards using 140,grn accoubonds took exactly 3 steps Fell over dead 1 shot 1dead bear

Certainly! not always the case, That’s been well documented.Yet I am Glad to hear your examples resulted in better outcomes.

1 shot 1dead bear

Umm, Depending on Size of Bear! Not to many Guides would look favorably on you Packing a 243 for a Coastal Brown Bear, Regardless of your experience. Smaller 250lbs Black bear, Different story.

Perhaps Your idea of “Loaded for Bear” is a Pocket full of 22 lrs - Tho it’s Not mine.

Never used a guide & never will I shoot what I want to shoot nobody tells me what I can use to kill something Never lost an animal in the 40,years I've been Killing games and never needed more then 1 shots to get it done , if it isn't broad side I won't squeeze the trigger I don't care how big its antlers horns or body is,

Ohk- Yet a Big Grizzly or a Coastal Needs a bit more than a .280 to be Safe- That was what I was referring to.

I havnt been to the Moon or Mars, Yet I know getting there ……Takes more than 87 octane and a Vw Beatle.

I could find the story somewhere, Yet I recall there was a Guy who Went African Lion hunting. He successfully killed the Lion with a 270 Winchester. That was proving the Magnums not needed. Ok, Tho that “Could” have easily turned out to be much worse of a story. Wouldn’t you agree…. Dangerous game requires More than “Just enough” gun ?!?!

Maybe We are talking different sized bears here? Large Grizzly, Kodiak, Coastal Brown bears are a bit different than the Ny Black Bear in the backyard when I was a kid that resembled a Large German Shepard.
When I went to Africa, I prepared for Large and Dangerous game. My Arms definitely could handle some of that. 375 A.I. - 300 win Mag and 500 S&W.
When I seen a Rhino with baby behind her I wanted a Rocket launcher.

Im sure if a Large Brown Bear was hauling ass 30mpg, pissed off at anyone, They would want a larger gun than a 280.

Just saying- I’m not a 30/378 Weatherby guy for Antelope…. When a 270 will do… yet when we talk Big Bears, Ya I prefer Large caliber

A past coworker hunted Alaska bear quite a bit with mainly one guide that related a story of a client hitting a big one with a magnum rifle only to have it charge them, the guide pulled out his pistol and gave him all six rounds weather he needed to or not’ the bear dropped within a few feet as the story goes.

My coworker says in his experience ..ya never know

Here is nice brief story of a Coastal Brown Bear hunt that went south with a 338 Ultra mag! and 470 yards of distance,3 Well placed shots and a charge. Both people almost died.

Ummm, Ya!

Black bear arenot particularly hard to kill, heck, Ive killed several with flintknapped arrow heads and an osage selfbow. But, with the great bears you need firepower. For personal defense 10mm is MINIMUM IMHO with 44 mag being a better option. For hunting them, there are tons of options. Heck, my taxidermist killed his 900# Kamchatka Coastal Grizzly with a bolt action 308 Win.

My Alaskan mistress is a freedom arms 83 premiere 454 casull with precision cast 335 gr. in a galco chest holster. My moose rifle nick named bear spray is a Blaser R8 in .375 H&H. Nick name came from my pilot Urs in British Columbia. When boarding float plane he asked if I had bear spray? I simply told him I had just handed it to him. He turned around and laughed. It stuck. By the way no aerosol allowed inside planes he puts it in the floats. 20220201_013545.jpg

Glacier Outfitters of Alaska has it in print and I believe them. They have had poor results on bear in .338. Guides and outfitters I have spoken with all carried smaller rifles until they got charged or found themselves paralleled and hunted as prey.

A rifle chambered in 458 Lott will drop any bear in North America. And one can carry the Encore pistol as a backup instrument also in 458 Lott on their person. But man what a punch it delivers ...

Shot one years ago in a ruger #1.
I was shooting a .416 rem mag at the time in ruger #1. I'll never forget that day as we were both ringing out some reloads. I didn't shoot for 3 weeks after that. I wish I still had my #1 but I don't miss that recoil. Offhand shooting is fine but bench work going through trial loads can punish a person. You'll get no argument from me on the recoil.
I have aged and settled into my .375 H&H it's so manageable and fast in a straight pull bolt gun. No where near the recoil and faster back on target. Atleast for me.
