What Gun For Bears?

That’s another 35 caliber I would like to add to my stable. In spite of my aversion for belted magnums.

I’ve taken bear with 30/30, 270win, 308win, 7mm rem mag and 338 Ruger Compact Magnum.
Depends what style of hunt. Over bait I’d go with my 454 Casull carbine. Shooting in a field or mountain side I’d go with 7mm or 338. Lots of distance and lots of thump.
The bear in my profile was shot at 175 yards with a 225 grain interbond from my 20” Ruger compact

shoot often and shoot well

Now living in Idaho, after40 years in Alaska. I am always more worried about “getting jumped” fishing along a stream ( fish blood all over) or packing backpacks full of caribou ( fresh snacks) walking slowly along towards camp. I’ve been in a few too many close contact situations, where a HANDY quick into action BIG revolver is called for. I will always have a .454 Casull or .475 LINEBAUGH with me, ready to use. I like strapping one on my chest so easy access R or L handed. Jackets, waders, backpacks, etc, block access to a belt rig, and will be with you, on your person at all times! A howitzer, leaning on the tree, 10’ away might get you mauled or killed. I sleep in my tent with my “Mistress” ( short .454) on my chest anytime I’m out in the wilds. Just my .02 cents worth.

fellas what about a 44 levergun, 300 grain hardcasts at 1700 on big bear? I havent hunted them and probably never will, so just wondering

Ya makes yer choices and takes yer chances!!! I always prefer to be over gunned than under gunned but that’s just my choices.

For black bear I'd be comfortable with that, but there is something about a close bear encounter that makes you wish you were as overgunned as possible. I can only imagine a close up encounter with a coastal grizzly...44 mag is my minimum...

State of Alaska says 30-06 is big enough and suggested for anything in their state. Interesting reading for a Midwesterner

It works well on black bears. Having hunted grizzlies, kodiak, and polar bears many years ago, a .44 magnum out of rifle is not enough based on my experience.
