What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?
Lets say all semi-auto pistols with magazines are banned and all you could own handgun wise are revolvers.
What revolver would you get and have for ccw and general defense?

Well if it happened RIGHT NOW, my Ruger GP100 Compact would be just about perfect, with a Colt DS for a BUG.

If this had to be a long term thing, I'd love to see a 5 shot L frame sized gun chambered in say .45 ACP fed by moonclips to make the most use of the platform for personal carry. The only problem is, moonclips are a bit tricky to carry compared to magazines so I'd probably still carry that Ruger most of the time. I'd also get my mitts on one of the laser grip equipped Smith and Wesson J frames.

I'd just use revolvers I already own - a S&W 640 for carry and the S%W 625 for house/truck. Both are pre ILS, both are dependable and accurate.

So you're saying all semi-autos have been banned, but you're still allowed to own revolvers. If the Antis had enough clout to ban semi-autos then you could be darn sure that they would ban revolvers too. But since you thought up this wheelgun utopia, and provided I'm allowed more than one revolver; then I'd go with a S&W Model 649 for CCW, and a Model 686 for general defense, in case I get attacked by any generals.

I would be satisfied with a S&W M&P pre-model 10 I have in 38 special for ccw and general defense I would have plenty of speed loaders handy.
And maybe a .357 magnum revolver of some type for other applications.
I made this thread just for fun and giving a odd scenario

Nothing wrong with wheel guns; they served our grandfathers and their fathers before them -- and the nation -- for a long, long time. Interestingly, revolvers have seen something of a resurgence in recent years from, of all people, crooks and perps and bad guys, who have discovered that the LEOs don't have access to spent cartridges when they remain inside the gun. S&W still makes superb wheel guns, as does Ruger, Beretta, and a handful of other companies. We might miss our semi-autos, but we'd quickly learn to adapt and get along fine.

"What if the only handguns you could own are revolvers?"

The capacity of my primary handgun and my reload times for it would suffer relative to my current choice; in the grand scope of things, that's not much.

I usually use my auto loaders, but would feel well defended with what I already have in the way of wheel guns:

General SD/House gun: S&W 686 plus, 4" barrel

Concealed carry: S&W 19-3, 2 1/2" barrel

Deep concealment/pocket carry: S&W 442

What revolver would you get "

I'm going to post the same answer as was posted in a similar thread about rifles:
For logistical reasons only I'd have the same revolver (As well as long gun) as everyone around me had while we were going to correct the one revolver only situation.

Only revolvers, huh?

Well, having grown up learning to shoot single action revolvers and transitioning to DA revolvers later ... and then later still carrying issued revolvers when I entered LE work ...

I'd end up keeping a number of revolvers, and probably the same general selection as I've previously owned, and still own.

I'd have various size platforms chambered in .38 Spl, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. Small frame, medium frame and heavy frame. 5 & 6-shot models. Different barrel lengths, too.

In the last several years my common choice for off-duty carry has frequently been one or another S&W J-frame revolver.

I have a Ruger SP-101 for those times when I feel inclined to do a lot of shooting with .357 Magnum ammunition with a short-barreled 5-shot revolver, too. The M&P340 is more punishing than I commonly prefer for a small .357 Magnum wheelgun.

I think a .357 Magnum revolver in 2 1/2", 3" or 4" barrel length makes for a very versatile defensive handgun. A nicely maintained S&W K/L frame or a Ruger Security/Service-Six or GP series would do for normal chores.

Some folks aren't well enough trained and frequently practiced to do well with .357 Magnum ammunition, though, so suitable .38 Spl standard pressure or +P might be better choices for them.

I like .44 Magnum for general field usage in the back woods.

Of course, I still like my Ruger single action revolvers, as well. I even used to sometimes carry either a .44 or .45 Colt Blackhawk back before they were disqualified for off-duty usage.

This a trick question? ;)

I wouldn't feel under gunned with a revolver. That's what I carry 90% of the time anyway. But the scenario you outlined would prove that if they can outlaw autos, they could certainly outlaw revolvers too. Pretty scary stuff.

Ruger GP100 revolvers are nice wheel guns.
357 is a nice round so if i had to give up my glock i would one.

The same one that goes out with me everyday.

45 ACP, can't be beat. Those happen to be HydraShoks but I could be well served with Ball ammo.

SP-101 for carry, GP100 for house.

FWIW I just spent the afternoon out in the back of the property practicing my draw/shoot technique with my 2 1/4 SP-101 on a 3 gallon plastic flower pot at 5 yards using full power Remington .357 SJHP's. What an awesome little gun. Who says you can't get fast, accurate follow up shots with a .357 snubby? Shooting controlled pairs, I was able to keep 'em all on target with no trouble.

I like my semi-autos, but I would put that SP up against anyone in a fight. It is a smooth, powerful, accurate, easy to conceal and utterly flawless weapon that packs one hell of a wallop. I cut my teeth in self defense shooting with a .357 revolver and I don't feel like not having access to a semi-auto would hinder me that much. (I would miss my semi auto .45acp's though:()

No problem I would start carrying a Ruger SP101 with night sights. Oh wait - I already carry a Ruger SP101 with night sights. In a IWB Blade Tech holster. I guess I would be OK.

You say that like its a problem. I have a S&W model 38 that I carry when I'm able. If I want a little more punch, I have a 3" model 13, if I want still more, I'll pick my 696 or 3" 629.

I was born in the mid 50's.
Mentors and Elders were concerned when I was coming up, about this very thing.
Before the GCA of 1968 they were putting back besides certain rifles and shotguns in the event banning ....

Revolvers in .22, and .38spl from snub nose to larger. Including Single Action, Break open, and typical double action revolvers by Colt & S&W.
As time passed, .357 and .44 magnum were added. Again Single Action and Double Actions.

Blackpowder guns too...

My choices would be same as they were then, and I have used since.
Back then I shot a variety to see what fit me, and these still work for me today.

Just thoughts...

I do want a single action in 45 Colt or .44 magnum ...

What I do now: J-frame 342PD for carry.

I'd have to swap my 239 with Lasermax for my 686+ for home defense.
