What is you favorite Brand name round in these cals?

I don't really go for specific "brand names" for handguns. I keep it pretty basic:

380- pointy rounds from American companies that will function in my GF's Ruger

9mm- American made JHPs on sale- I use Glocks, so reliability isn't a factor

45 ACP- American made JHPs on sale- again, Glock

for training, whatever ball ammo is on sale.

For practice rounds and range use in .380, 9mm., and .45 ACP I pretty much go with whatever is the least expensive (or else I found it on sale), and stock up on it. Winchester, Federal, Fiocchi, CCI Blazer Brass, and Remington all make fairly decent ammo for this purpose. For concealed carry or home defense I like Speer Gold Dot, Hornady Critical Defense, Federal Premium, and Winchester PDX1 Defender. The only two ammo brands that I really have a preference for are Wolf Match Target and CCI MiniMags in .22LR.

Cheap. If there is a very slight price difference I might pay the extra to get something other than wolf, tula, or bear, but it can't be much of a difference. 2 bucks a box? Only thing I will pay more than that for is PMC, but that is only about a 4 dollar a box premium over the cheapest thing offered.

For practice shooting, I prefer Armscor in all 3 calibers. If I can't get it, I'll go with whatever is cheapest and available.

If your referring to serious shooting, then it's either Gold Dots, Gold Sabre or Critical Defense Ammo.

My overall preferred ammo is Gold Dot.

Bulk vs self defense ammo? For bulk it is anything cheap. I'll even use factory reloaded ammo if it comes in a box. For self defense rounds I go for names, not hype. I like to carry Federal HST if it is in the grain/caliber I need. Would love to try out Winchester Ranger T for carry ammo, can never find any.

For practice, Speer Lawman is my first choice, as it is very clean and consistent and hotter than the WWB and the like. Blazer Brass is second. Federal, Aguila and S&B are next.

I've built up my supply over the last year so that I can wait for what I want to become available. Most of my ammo comes from SGAmmo.com. Can't beat the price and service, and they don't gouge on shipping like some of the others do.

I don't shoot 380, but I do shoot 38 special. Speer Gold Dot standard pressure is my favorite 124g in 9mm and 185g in .45. The Hornady Critical Duty is intriguing, but it shoots low in my 9mm and I have not decided if I'll ever carry my .45. I shoot it well, but I just don't like it much.

I like Ranier or Berry plated bullets for practice.

.380- defensive: Sig v-crown. Target : Speer lawman or PPU. Most of the small 380's are finicky, but they all shoot the Speer lawman FMJ great so far.

9- Defensive : Federal HST 124gr or Speer Gold Dot 115/ 124 , Target whatever is cheap that week except cci blazer.

45- Federal HST 230, Remington Golden Saber 185gr +p, Speer Gold Dot 230. Target : Cheapest. No wolf steel.

Beware broad swaths of " the whole line of XYZ is great across the board". Ballistic testing shows us that some bullet types excel in certain calibers and conditions, while others in the same line perform very poorly.

The rem gold saber is a great example of this...

I don't have brand loyalty, whatever is on sale with FMJ bullets and BRASS cases.

For defense rounds I go with Federal HST. .45/9mm

I do keep Hornady Critical Defense for my 380.

I tend to stick with Winchester or Federal for pistols, whichever is cheaper/available at the time. Shotguns is the same, rifles has moved to exclusive Federal, just for consistency at longer ranges. I personally have never had a single issue with either brand. I have had enough problems with Remington to never go back. YMMV.
