Usually the dogs are barking at a rat in the backyard so I grab an axe handle and a pair of leather gloves.

My pooches bark regularly...I generally don't grab a gun.....they usually bark at critters or someone visiting next door.
They do have a different and distinct bark that causes me to investigate..then I grab whatever is nearest.

Most of my neighbors have dogs a few several of them. When they all were barking and their owners yelling for them to shut-up a coyote was rushing down the alley. The little yapper across the street barks at anything or just to hear his voice?

The dogs bark at everything, but when the geese AND dogs are making noise then I might investigate with the Mossberg 500 ATP. More concerned about 4 legged predators out here.

What gun do ya'll reach for when the dogs are barking ? I myself grab the Marlin 336, although a AR pattern rifle chambered in 6.5 Grendel with a 18 inch barrel, tac light, and red dot would be nice.
I get what you're asking.
When the chicken house, or garden, or sweet corn patch is getting looted, I respond with the only long gun that isn't under lock and key. It hangs on a hook near the back door. 20191218_205759.jpg Ruger's SR556

Streamlight taclight
Offset iron sights @15ft
Homemade no-rattle sling

As much as I’d like to shoot it sometimes, I just wind up yelling at it to be quiet.

I have other systems in place that don’t “go off” with birds, rabbits and squirrels but alert me when larger things come within 100 yards or so of the house.

If I grabbed a gun every time a dog barked, I would have to seriously review my behavior; grabbing a firearm is not my 1st (or 5th, or 19th or etc) response to a barking dog. In turn, there is nothing (I tell you nothing) more pleasant than a neighbor with a barking dog - a lot of dog owners where I live have to be deaf.

I can pretty much figure out what's outside when my doggies start up in the middle of the night (I'm fluent in German Shepherd Dog). They will look out the back windows or back patio door and let me know what's moseying through their yard (it's a big, big yard with nothing but woods behind it). Don't have too many rabbits in the area anymore, my dogs catch 'em and eat 'em. They'll bark a bit if a raccoon passes through the property near the house, get frantic if the critter comes up to a door, they'll got absolutely frantic if it's a deer (because they want to chase it, catch it and eat it), but if there's a bear out there, they'll go totally ballistic. Within the past few months, a women living down the road from us had a cougar take one of the goat she kept in her backyard one morning... couple years back a cougar killed a horse in our area. There's also an M-4 with a Surefire Scout light and an EOTech handy.

Mister Peanut, The Dog of Adventure, has different barks for different offenders.
A single low "wuff" and a quick search of the house means that there's a possum, cat or rat on the roof or close around.
Loud barking with a wagging tail means that the postman is here (they're friends).
Loud barking with no wags means either a real bad guy or the UPS truck is here.
(A UPS man tried to kick him once... .)
I just check the cameras and grab the Mossberg 500 if needed.

My Collie is always barking at something or another. If it's the "someone is in my yard" bark it's likely my neighbor, USPS, FedEx or UPS.

Don't grab anything other than the CCW that's already on my hip.
