As Jayne Cobb said,
I just get excitable as to choice- like to have my options open.
My first choice is my Ithaca 37.
SWMBO's choice is an AR pistol.
I have a1911 that she likes also, and I know a bit about using one.
I have my CCW gun, a PT 145, handy also.

What load do you run ?

I unfortunately picked the wrong summer to get into a new caliber, so I'm stuck with what I can get. I have a decent supply of Federal 130 grain Berger since my LGS only is able to get that in stock during these times.

Early experimentation has shown i get better accuracy from 123 grain Hornady (ELD and the other) but primers and powder being so scarce i haven't had proper time to develop a favorite load.

The 130 Berger is about 1-1.5" at 100 in my GrendelHunter upper so it'll have to do, I was sub MOA with Hornady Black and one other Hornady earlier this summer but only have a handful left.

I would hit the external floods (10x150w), probably grab a handful of Milkbones and head out to see what was bothering the pups as I do not have any dogs. ;)

Along with me would go whatever I was carrying during the day at the time, usually some flavor of .45acp.

Other than the 2-legged type, the only "dangerous" critters 'round here are two black bears ... I named them Bosco and Scooter. They stop by for a meal once in a while. :)

Reminds me of the scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles when John Candy's feet are hurting after a long day.

But seriously this firearm has been great for controlling my Maltese when he incessantly barks.

When the outside dogs are barking its usually a critter, and I'll grab the Rossi hanging by the back door.

Our two dogs passed away about a year ago. The only dogs barking now are my neighbor's dogs and they bark at everyone and everything and howl at sirens. No way for me to tell the good from the bad.

I don't have a dog anymore but I do have a wife that can hear a mouse fart at about a hundred yards. I have a 20 ga. loaded with buckshot when I get sent to check on the mice. So far I have never found one in all the years we have lived here.

Is your wife a Walker's Game Ear Ultra Ear BTE Hearing Enhancement amplifier ?

These guys almost never bark. Oliver (the lab) only barks during the day if he wants to play with the neighbor's kids. They usually come pet him through the fence.

But the VP9 in the bedside safe is closer and faster. (Just not as cool of a picture though).

Some folks never learn to distinguish their dog's types of barking to know if it's nothing or something they need to get up and go see.

And possibly some dogs don't bark in different ways to ever learn to tell.

My dogs bark in slightly different ways. Sometimes they are just talking with the other dogs in the neighborhood which concerns me not at all. Sometimes she barks in such a way that I know she thinks there's something concerning. Those I will get up and go see what's what. Seldom do I take a gun with me unless something else also clues me in. If I do need one the household 20ga pump goes with me. I live in the country so usually I'm concerned with predators and varmints which the buckshot will be more than equal to.

If something peculiar seems to be going on then I'll respond with whatever the moment seems to require.

My oldest dog is 14. She has barks for when she sees a squirrel. Or a leaf blowing that she wasn't expecting to. Or a wild turkey strutting in the front yard. I live out in the middle of nowhere on a dead end road. So her people bark doesn't get much use. When she does, I usually grab my EDC handgun. Fastest to grab and always loaded.

Half Border Collie, half Australian Shepherd who barks at anything and everything, including butterflies, his shadow, the wind, and the ghost he thought he saw. When he puts on his business bark though; I grab my 870 or an H&R Topper 12ga. Either would handle the occasional stupidly brave druggie who wanders through every few years.

Always on alert, ever vigilant,.
When Ginger, you can probably figure which one she is, barks in the middle of the night, my Winchester 18" 12 gauge comes out, and I wait at the top of the stairs.
Pip, the other one, usually just lifts her head like, "whaaaat?"

Motion detector cameras front and back. If my Shepard barks and the camera doesn’t go off it’s something to small to activate the sensor. If he barks and my app says there is something there I’ll take a look. I live on a dead end road so a lot of folks use my driveway to turn around.

I have a couple hundred acres of woods with a creek across the road. Every now and then I’ll catch a meth head looking over the fence at my locked tool shed. I’ll watch until a I determine what their intentions are. If I go out I’ll have my 12 ga pump.
18 1/2 inch barrel #4 buckshot.

If the dogs bark from something outside, I will barricade inside. Everything outside is replaceable. I do not currently have a dog right now as my dog passed away a few weeks ago. but maybe the cat will meow.
