Pre-Christmas at the Deer Camp reminded me of one I forgot. My workhorse camp gun. It's an M1917 that was sporterized a long time ago, likely in the '50's or 60's. It has a goofy custom stock on it (herters?) that somebody glass bedded in a crude but effective manner. Lots of gouging and goop, but they got a good clean fit on the barrel channel and barrel shank. I'm guessing it was somebodies NRA match rifle back when folks still shot 30-06 as it bears shadows of a barrel band front globe sight and a cutout and D/T for a Redfield or Lyman receiver sight and the trigger has been reworked, stripper clip guide was left intact, and the stock was shaped in a manner of some vintage match rifle's I have seen from the period. Sometime in the 80's it was converted into a scoped hunting rifle judging by the Weaver ring mount and 80's Bushnell Sportview fixed 4 that was D/T'd to it with the K-Mart price tag still on it. I found it at a pawnshop for $100 several years ago, and picked it up as a project gun planning to use the action as a basis for something cool. Then I shot it. The thing just shoots, really well, with whatever load I throw at it. Swapped the Sportview out for an inexpensive 1.5x4.5, and it lives at my deer camp. It's the only rifle I have that seems shoot any load, at any speed, to the same POI (minute of deer vitals at least) to 100 yards. Everything from M1 safe 150 FMJ to 180 gr full house Norma Alaska bearbusters will knock a beer can off a post at 100 with no adjustment. The thing is uncanny. I like to take it along when we go camp hopping late in rifle season as an informal shooting match will often break out with a few friendly wagers. It's A LOT of fun to put this beat up old warhorse up against the latest, greatest and shineyist rifles money can buy. It's a ringer.
