Which scope for the new rifle?

I'd that really like to find one of the weaver k4 classic or whatever they called them, just be over 10 years now when they came out. They were a near perfect copy of the k4 in steel or aluminum tube but with modern glass. I really wanted one but they were $400 or so, one would be perfect for the pre 64 m70 I'd like to update but not loose it's classic looks.

I may look for a luepold m8 4x they were nice scopes, but bring good money when they lol up. The Lyman all American were really good.

As luck would have it, there is a K4 Classic up for bid on Ebay right now. www.ebay.com/itm/234346747602?hash=item36902796d2:g:4kcAAOSwLkFhtT3F

There are three M8 4x scopes listed on the Bay also. They are priced according to their Leupold heritage though.

Doesn't say it it's aluminum or steel, the steel ones were twice the price I believe. This one doesn't look right for some reason.

the thing with used luepolds is there going to usually bring close to what there cheapest scope is. If you sent a m8 in for repair and they couldn't they would probably give you a vx-freedom

I wouldn't worry about that. The M8 is pretty simple and if it's an adjustment issue, they will be able to fix it. If you smash it or break a lens, all bets are off.

It's made in Japan and aluminum. Weaver hasn't used steel tubes since the original factory in El Paso closed.

Which one do you have?

Unlike the endless summer where you are, it's the middle of the winter here and it's hunting season. I have a Javelina ticket for January through March, plus quail is on, so I will be doing minimal range work until spring. I certainly appreciate the offer, but it would just sit if you sent it to me now. Let's revisit towards summer.
6-18 AO....yeah Lemme know, I use it on my 457 but I'll probably change that out for one of those little USOs.

That is the Special Edition 80th anniversary model. That was a marketing homage to the original steel tube Weavers. If that is what you want, good luck. You will have better luck finding a decent original El Paso steel tube K4 than that special edition. Of course, the glass in the originals is deeply inferior to modern glass. I have an original steel KV strictly as a collectible because El Paso is my hometown, and I grew up around Weaver in the sixties. The cement gluing the lenses together had failed, so I sent it out and had it repaired. It is now on display on a shelf in my man cave.

All of the El Paso Classic series were anodized aluminum from the start of the series in 1970 until the plant closed in 1984. Then Weaver then passed through various owners (the first was Omark Industries). The current owner is Vista Outdoors. The Classic Series was made by Weaver (Vista) until recently. The one in the Ebay link I sent you is of recent manufacture. Now, Weaver only makes rings and mounts. All scope lines have been discontinued.

Okay, thanks. I have a Leupold VX-2 6-18x40mm mounted on my varmint rifle right now. It might be interesting to compare them.

That's just one midway had, I remember them in the nanchez catalog, aluminum was $180 and steel were $360-80 something. Like I've said I've been looking for years, guys I've talked to said they were Excellent

This is the gun id like the new weaver for. It may cost to much to have this one cleaned and rebuilt.

Take it from me, getting it cleaned and rebuilt won't put modern glass with modern coatings in it. If I was going to scope my old Remington again, I would go back a few years when they were still making longer tubes and get one of those. A Leupold M8 would be nice and made in the USA like the rifle. For a more modern, but still good-looking scope, I like the Redfield Revolution as they were made by Leupold before they discontinued them. I have two of them on rifles right now.

If leupolds custom shop would come back on line you could just get a FX 6-42 (I like the way the larger objective leupolds look) In high polished anodizing....heck If they would send you the raw tube and components you could get a custom ano shop (or even do it your self if youve got the patience and space) to do a really high polish black ano.....that would look awful close to a blued steel scope.

Least till the ano started fading to purple, which is what most shiny gloss black anos do eventually LOL.

6x is a bit much, I did use a fn 243 for many years with a k6 weaver. Was good for fields but up close not so good, usable but 4x would be better. My head likes fixed power scopes no second guessing what power it's on or if the zero moved when changing power.
I do want to try a 1-6 or 1-8 lpvo some day on a deer rifle, the 9.3x62 was the gun I was thinking to use whenever I can get that project started.

i have one of the anniversary weavers. it resides on my 222. (don't forget the timex that comes with). ....for a good modern somewhat availible but classic looking scope grab the 3-9 luepold with the 33mm adjustable objective. small retro looking but very usable....fits all the classic wood steel guns with old style bolt hands, etc (low mounts).

Old blued rifles tend to go plum colored too. I kind of like that.

I like 2-7x32mm scopes just fine. Pretty much perfect for a big game scope for ordinary ranges. Even if you forget and have it on 7 when something jumps out, you can probably make it work.

I have the 2-7 leupold on my cz 527 and like it a lot, it may get moved over to the Winchester someday. I'll have to figure out what mount I will go with on the pre 64 I like the side mount but you can't lock it down and if brushed against something it will tip up.
