Which scope for the new rifle?

I have the 2-7 leupold on my cz 527 and like it a lot, it may get moved over to the Winchester someday. I'll have to figure out what mount I will go with on the pre 64 I like the side mount but you can't lock it down and if brushed against something it will tip up.

I like the looks of the M70 of yours. Those old rifles are true classics.

Just as an aside, Winchester used to just sent every rifle they produced out for sale regardless of their potential for history. The Serial No. 1 Model 70 with the barrel marked .30 GOV'T06 was sold in a Durango hardware store in 1937 to a guy from Texas. Later, that man passed the gun down down his nephew, who had no idea what he had until 1987. Anyway, the No.1 M70 and the still existing No. 2 M70 have been paired up and are offered for auction. The firm asking price for the pair is $1,750,000.

You hear that, Loon?? You got 1.75 million laying around in a drawer somewhere??

He has that cool 76 Winchester in his family with some cool history.

Serial # 1 has a Fecker scope. Maybe you ought to hunt up one of those for yours.
The kv seems perfect, think it's a 54-55 gun is a 50 so maybe the got the rifle hunted a few seasons then got the side mount out on and scope. The mount wasn't to much new, most other mounts cost more but the kv was weavers most expensive scope. So maybe have I mount that fliped was very important to the owner. The Smith that did the side mount did a very nice job, with the mount off there's only a small strip of wood missing from the top.

I am not sure what I think of the KV. You have to take the cap off to change the magnification. That isn't really convenient. I think I would rather hunt with a K4 or K6.

Nope! Besides while a very cool pairing, im not a collector or model 70 fan so ill pass.

I'd rather have a k4 as well, think the kv was good for guys changing hunting Distances, going from 3 to 5 feels like a pretty big jump. People back then thought 4x was high power.

45-75.....
And I remember wrong, It was two different 1876s. One is the Musket, the others a regular rifle.....

Ooooohhh, the muskets are desirable. Next in line in my heart are the full stocked carbines. Then the rifles with the button magazine. I bid on one of those not too long ago. A new Cimarron 1876 in 50-95. I didn't win.

I have a quick question?
Is there any problem with mounting a rifle scope on a 22lr?
I have used the Simmons 22mag and cheaper rifle scopes on 22s in the past with out problems.
Just not sure if the parallax can be an issue.

I now tend to only mount AO or SF scopes on my rimfires and other short range guns, but thats less to do with parallax and more to do with not being able to use the higher powers at shorter ranges due image focus.

For years tho I couldn't afford to put specific scopes on my .22s, so they got what ever regular hunting scopes i had laying around. Never had an issue getting the job done, i just had to reduce the power i was running the scope at when shooting at short range.

Non adjustable scopes made for the 22RF have their parallax adjusted to a set distance. To my knowledge, that distance is 50 yards, but my knowledge isn't very wide in this regard.

So thanks to some good reviews from folks I trust, and my own curiosity, I burned up the last of my gun credit and some of my year-end bonus to order a Sako S20.

A new gun always deserves a new scope right? Or maybe a new guns a good excuse to buy a new scope......probably the later.....

Anyway, I ordered an Athlong Midas HMR 2.5-15x50 (over a Meopta Optika5, on the advice of someone I trust) and a set of rings for my new rifle.
About two days later I ran across a Meopta/Cabelas HTR 6.5-20x50, which I bid on and won.
(I have the Meopro version of the scope on my .280AI, and had one of the Cabelas one on my old 28Nos)

That leaves me in a bit of quandary as to which to drop on the new gun, and which to move over to my swap barrel build.

The HMR has a more traditional power range (albeit wider) for a hunting scope, has a much wider adjustment range, has covered turrets which are really nice(I have not run a tracking test on one of these yet), and is illuminated.

Its also heavier by a bit, and slightly bulkier with its 30mm tube.

The Meopta has a noticeably higher max power, while still being at about the min I turn my scopes down to, Its got slightly (and I do mean slightly) better glass to my eye, is lighter, has a covered windage turret and a Kenton vertical. I found the one I have (with normal meopta target turrets) on my 280AI to be very capable at dialing and returning to zero.

The downsides are that its a very long scope (which shouldnt be a big deal on the long action S20, but it looked kinda funny on my short action 6.5), and the Vertical adjustment is only like 30MOA total (the one I had on my 28Nosler Xbolt burned up 24 of that in zeroing at 100yds).
I really don't see myself doing a ton of long distance shooting with this rifle, or that limited vertical travel would be a major issue.

So which scope would you put on a brand new (relatively heavy already) 7mm Remington Magnum turn bolt hunting gun?

I'm not sure if you ever take really close shots, but that 6.5x minimum could be an issue for a short shot. The max I'll go on my minimum magnification is 4x. I just bought an Athlon Argos HMR 4-20x50 because I like my Midas HMR so much. Hopefully I will be just as impressed with that Argos. I hunt deep woods and the Midas is incredible in low light. I like the illumination too. Is theMeopta/Cabelas illuminated? I'm putting the Argos on a Browning X Bolt Micro Composite 7mm-08 just I bought for my 11 year old son to hunt with. Thought it'd be a nice mountain rifle too.
