If you had to pick just one handgun and a rifle/carbine, and they had to both be the same caliber or should I say shoot the same bullit.

What would they be and why.

This is for self defence and in case you know what hits the fan...

In not a big fan of pistol caliber carbines, but given your option I would probably go for a 4" GP100 and a .357 magnum lever action carbine, as this setup gives me the ability to reach out and hit targets at a decent range, offers a good amount of stopping power, allows for easy reloading of spent cartridges, and the guns themselves will be durable enough to keep serving me under the worst conditions I can think of.

I have a .40 rifle and pistol combo (Keltec Sub2k and CZ40b) that is pretty kewl. Since the sub2k folds in 1/2, I can slip the rifle and pistol into a briefcase with 2 spare mags for both pistol and rife and still be ~10lbs. 81 rounds of .40 S&W should make someones day pretty bad if SHTF;)

Probaby Beretta Storm pistol and carbine, since I haven't picked a pistol to pair with the Marlin .357...yet.

Scenario is not really specified enough to say, but...

On one of the AK gunboards some months back I saw a writeup of an AK build someone had done, in .45 ACP. Just give me one of them, and a double handful of long magazines.

OH! Oh! Here ya go!

S&W 60
Marlin 1894C

.357 Magnum is a very versatile round. As long as I could also have my Marlin .22 rifle I'd be set. Hmm, well I'd also want my 12 ga. Ok, then I be set. Wait... :)

Why would you force yourself to use a weak pistol round in place of a rifle round? Even the weaker rifle rounds put pistol calibers to shame.

That said, I guess I would go the AK route then, AK pistol and AK carbine.

I would have to go with something I am familiar with and know I could absolutely depend on. That would be a S&W 686 or Ruger GP100 4" .357 and a Marlin 1894. That would be plenty for all but all out warfare and even then may not be much disadvatage if you actually practice with them a lot.

To take advantage of the rifle/carbine platform it would be interesting to find a combo in 10mm or .45acp. The Glock 30 and mythical Glock carbine or a Auto Ordance tommy gun. :D

For reliability, a lot of people like the combination of a SA revolver and a lever-action rifle.

If you like .357 Magnum or .44 Magnum, Ruger makes the SA and Marlin makes the lever-action in either.

(I can't imagine a protracted "defend the castle" situation, but I tend toward the .45 ACP and .30-06 combination. Call me old-fashioned. :) )

Ruger GP100 6" stainless paired with a stainless Puma 92 lever rifle with 20" barrel.
I would have said Marlin 1894C for the long gun if they made that in stainless.

In .357 magnum/.38 spl, these two pieces should handle 99.9% of all SD situations and should help me obtain what I need for the remaining 0.1% if the worst case ever happens.

If you can find them...

357Magnum in Winchester Trapper.
45Colt aka long colt in Winchester Trapper
I and/or "We" owned both of the above in 'pistol calibers'. I loved them. I did make some changes in my gun collection and due to my move out west as planned, after my late husband died. I sold the pistol calibers (Rifles.) and bought a 30-30 for Montana.

If you can't find a good Trapper get a Marlin because I happen to love Marlins too. (I love my Browning in BL 22 but that is a rimfire caliber! A Winchester 94-22 is sweet too!) My late husband owned a Marlin in 357Magnum and my groom/husband owns many Marlins in you name it! Grin.

I like the Marlin Model 336 in 30-30 but that is not what you are asking about too.

A 44Magnum is very good although I did not PERSONALLY own a RIFLE in one but I did own that S&W Model 29. We owned a 29-2 and a 29-3 in that gun. I know guys who own a Model 629, Model 29 and a Marlin in 44Magum and they LOVE that caliber as ones in 357Magnum and 45Colt aka long colt! I rented a SWEET Model 629 back east too.

S&W and Ruger make great handguns and I am VERY biased towards them... especially in Ruger Single Actions... grin.

I absolutely ADORE the Ruger Blackhawk in 45Colt but if I was worried about ammunition costs and did not 'reload' along with buying ammo... I would choose a NICE and STRONG... 357Magnum. I could use 38Special Plus P in it too. My husband reloads.

RUGER Blackhawk New Model 357Magnum.

Or

RUGER SP101® · Satin Stainless

Caliber: .357 Magnum
Capacity: 5 Rounds
Finish: Satin Stainless
Grip: Rubber w/ Synthetic Insert
Barrel Length: 3 1/16"

Or a D/A in a Ruger and/or S&W.

I like combo guns - guns and rifles in pistol calibers and my late husband and I had that back east long before I started to buy my own guns back in 1998! Ours were for self defense not for hunting although we had NOTHING against hunting or hunters.

I do like a BIG rifle for some parts of the country too. A sweet 30-30 and a 45-70 (My husband's not mine = 45-70.) are 2 of my TOP favorites for NON pistol calibers.

Best wishes!

Catherine
PS: Many years ago I saw a SWEET black rifle in 9MM. I think that it was in a Ruger or in a Marlin but I am not positive - I was NEW to buying MY own guns back in 1998! I owned a Glock Model 19C and I almost bought a rifle so I would have twins for 9mm caliber! I love 22LR for combo handguns and rifles too. I have several of them. Excuse my ramble here and let us know what you decide on.

PS

PS:

There was a poster on here who mentioned the combo of a single action revolver along with a lever action rifle.

I agree with that poster since I would choose THOSE TWO for MY COMBO if I had a pistol caliber combo as I did back east and if I did not go to my 30-30 along with some other changes in my own collection.

I would choose a RUGER Blackhawk single action revolver in x, y or z caliber although mine is in 45Colt.

I would choose my Marlin 336SS in 30-30 (LEVER action rifle.) and if I did not have the 30-30 --- it would be in 45Colt for out here, 44magnum next and 357Magnum last.

If it was only for self defense although you could go 'bigger' --- I would go with 357Magnum. For my travels OUT here to "off the beaten path" places in Montana... I would choose the bigger caliber.

Sorry if I am repeating myself!

Catherine

I'll have to add another vote to "Cowboy style"; revolver and lever gun in the same caliber.

From my own limited collection, I have only a .357 Taurus snubby, and no lever rifles (yet). I intend to rectify that absence soon, but even so, a snubby is probably not the pistol I'd pick if I had to pick a pistol. Say that three times fast. Heh. Seriously, though, I'd want a good revolver with at least a 4" barrel.

There are a few reasons I'd prefer this combo over an automatic/carbine combo. I think, for the most part, that .357 (or .44, alternatively) are more effective distance rounds for the carbine than the available auto pistol calibers. At least, it seems so to me. And revolvers are certainly effective in .357 or .44 as well, so you wouldn't be trading away pistol effectiveness for carbine effectiveness (which I'd be afraid of doing with rifle-caliber pistols). Additionally, I like the fact that there are no magazines to keep track of, although that's less of a problem if your pistol and carbine take the same mags.

It's a classic setup, really, and it's still effective. This is not to say that auto pistol caliber carbines aren't good, or valid choices, I just don't think they make as versatile a combination.

Most likely, a Marlin 1894 and a Ruger GP100 in .357 mag. If I were really expecting a "combat" situation though, I'd not be worried about the two firearms shooting the same cartridge. As others have said, in that situation I'd want a real rifle round available, and wouldn't worry if my sidearm fired the same cartridge.

The OP said, "This would be for self defense...", but did not say from what/whom. If it were primarily for a home defense setup against human threats, I'd go with my Ruger GP100 4" and a Marlin 1894c, both in .357 magnum. If this would be my primary wilderness setup for defense against large dangerous critters, I'd opt for my Ruger Redhawk 4" and a Marlin 1894, both in .44 magnum. The .44 setup might be just a little more versatile if uses included SHTF scenarios where you'd need to possibly hunt large game for survival. .357 magnum out of a rifle can probably take just about anything on the North American continent with the right loads and a well-placed shot, but .44 magnum is a slightly safer bet. It could also be down-loaded with low-flash, low-recoil .44 special for home defense.

Glock 29 and an MP-5/10.

What's not to like about that combo? The pistol is certainly concealable, which I would definitely want, and 10mm would certainly be pretty good out of an MP5 length barrel.
