pick one gun for the rest of your life.

Another vote for .22 (10/22 for me). I agree that large game would be less than ideal, but certainly not impossible. And so long as we're talking only one gun, things are already less than ideal...

Shotgun all the way
Saiga 12 (AK shottie) or a Remington 870

Shotguns are so versatile, if you can only have one gun, get a shotgun.

They are the best gun all around hands down and they have enough different types of loads you get multiple types of weapons from one gun.

My S12 loaded with 11 rounds of buckshot is essentially the same as having a hand gun loaded with 88 rounds of .32

Or I can switch it out and have 11 slugs which is plenty to take down whatever you feel like up to 100 yards.

Plus in a month or two I will have a 20 round drum for the S12...160 rounds of .32 on one load or 20 slugs or alternate between the two.

Gotta go shotgun.

Absolute end of the world scenario?

CZ 452 Lux. Very few springs to break. Most likely will keep working long after I am dead. Robust iron sights....... I have enough ammo on hand to hunt for meat for the rest of my life.

Otherwise... I wouldn't be caught with just one gun.

My Lux is the last gun I would sell.

Others I would trade away or use for clubs after I had expended all available ammo.

I have an AR and a Mauser with enough ammo on hand for a reasonable SHTF scenario.

Well, "survival situation" was not in the question so in "peactime" I would pick my Browning Citori XS. It's definitely the gun I have the most fun with. I hunt with my recurve. Pistol? 686+ for it's reliability and versatility. For survival I'd probably go with one of my 9's for availibility of ammo and ease of carrying same. If I needed more umph I would shoot a bad guy and take his. :)

Hi-Point 995C
9mm carbine, really very accurate out to about 100 yards with open sights. better with 4X40 scope. cheap to shoot but still small enough for close quators area.

One gun? I guess a S&W 686 4". Why? .38 & .357 ammo choices. Revolver simplicity, relibility.

Valmet shooting system
30-06 DBL
12GA/222
20/20
Scope the 30-06 dbl, zero one bbl @ 200yds the other @ 400yds

T/C G2 and 10-20 barrels with differentn calibers. Ok. T/ C Encore witch 15 rifle and pistol barrels

Adhering to the strickest interpretation of 1, ONE firearm, I would take an:

over-under .30-06 Sprg/12 gauge

If I were allowed alternate barrels, I'd have to go with a T/C Encore in .22LR, .223, .30-06 & 12 gauge. I suspect the original poster did not intend that.

Okay, I'm am totally surprised at the number of people who choose a long gun.

Keep in mind that the OP did not specify what the situation was. Whether it was legislative fiat, financial conditions, only time to grab one gun when house burned down, disaster, or what - the type of gun most likely to be useful to you (to anybody) is a handgun.

It doesn't matter what the situation is. Normal everyday life; TEOTWAWKI; short-term disaster; fascist government; social breakdown - the most likely scenario is that you DO NOT have your long gun on you when you need a gun. So long as your handgun is more than a mouse gun, you can take small deer sized game with a handgun, you can take varmints.

I'm going with a Glock 19, due to ammo availability, respectable power and accuracy, ruggedness and durability. It's concealable (do it every day) and I can hit a man-sized target at 100 yards (granted, I've never tried when bullets were going both ways) if I needed to. I could easily hunt deer under 50 yards.

Yes, there are things that you can't do with a Glock that you could do with a rifle or shotgun (most involve longer range and bigger/flying animals). But there are FAR FAR more things that you could do with a mid-sized handgun that you just couldn't possibly do with a long gun.

My second choice would be a S&W model 10 in .38 special. I'd pick a .357 mag, but I don't own one.

pick one tool for the rest of your life. Hammer? Screwdriver? Drill?

Vise grips...

Okay, my gun would be an AR-15, with some special options... Might even be the one that I am considering building now...

I am not a pistol or shotgun shooter. I don't have a pistol yet, but I do have a couple of shotguns. I am not real big fans of 'em, though. So my 870 will probably be the last shotgun that I buy...

My 1911 in .45 ACP along with a.400 COrBon
barrel and add a .22 LR conversion.

Not bad..........here's mine  Thompson 1927A-1

PICT1021.gif

Add three 30-rnd box clips and a 50-rnd drum................I'm set ;)

Milled receiver AK in 7.62x39 with 10, 20, and 30 round mags and a quality, side-rail mounted optic. It can hunt, plink, or defend.

A Saiga 12 would be a close second.

I just realized that I'm making an assumption in this exercise that others may not be, including Cajun (OP).

When I list my "single gun, the only one I can ever own" (makes me cringe a bit to write that), I'm assuming that I'm not alone. I'm not a wandering samuri, but part of a ... um, neighborhood, community, squad, collective, tribe, whatever ... maybe even including some of you. (I mean, we are a community of sorts anyway.)

Each (unhappy) person has their "one gun" :( that make up a tool kit in the group: at least one shotgun (more likely several), a couple of bolts (for long range), some revolvers, pistols, surely an AK/AR or ten, etc. We are allowed to share.

In this scenario, I'm just picking out the tool that I would most want to be "in charge of" (carrying in transit, daily use, care and feeding, etc).

Again, for me, with my interests, potential uses, and sheer love of the gun (including the way it handles, carries, shoots, its weight and size, all of which are just optimal for me, best I've ever owned), that's an 1894C with an African-carry sling with a healthy array (large diversity) of .357 mag and .38 spl (probably FMJ ball in the later case to reduce jams). I'm also assuming there is reloading equipment in the community.

YMMV about the assumption. I guess a lot of folks are playing this game assuming they're alone in the wilderness, urban or wild.

Sort of curious to know ...

i'd rather have a handgun and be able to carry it everyday than a long gun that would only be more useful in a SHTF situation that may never happen.

18.5" Barreled Mossberg 590A1 With ghost ring sights. Buy a new barrel with a choke for rabbits ect... and I'll be set.
