Which would you rather carry?

Depends a lot on the gun in question, but I'm inclined to lean towards the 9mm because I would most likely be able to shoot it better than a .45 in a compact or subcompact gun, if we're talking about an apples to apples comparison. But if we're talking Kahr P9 vs. 1911 (as an example), that wouldn't be an even comparison as I could shoot the 1911 in .45 better than the 9mm Kahr.

Which would you rather be run over by, a VW Golf, or a Greyhound Bus? :D

If both pistols were basically the same size, I'd carry the .45. And, in fact, I do.

The 9mm with good ammo and a reload. I have 8 in the gun and a reload of 8 with my Shield 9mm. 124g HST should do what it's supposed to.

I currently carry the XDs .45 with the 5 round magazine in a smart carry holster with a spare 7rd magazine in the holsters 2nd pocket. Works well for me. I've also carried two 9mm single stacks, but prefer the .45.

The 9mm. It'll be a thinner gun and easier to carry. If 7 rounds of 9mm doesn't solve your problem I don't think 6 rounds of .45 would.

I have the choice between a Colt Officers Model and a Kahr CM9. Back in the day the Officers Model (especially the aluminum alloy frame version), was quite the ticket when it came to carrying a compact .45 ACP. Nowadays I greatly prefer the lighter weight and smaller size of the CM9 for concealed carry.

I pretty much agree with you. Most of the single stack .45's I see don't have much for extended magazines and if they are available, they'll add 1 rd to the gun, but the LC9 has a 9 rd mag and 9 rds after a reload is a lot better than 7 imo.

That is not correct, especially for the true 1911 format. All 1911 magazines are interchangeable and there are readily available 10, 12 & 14 round 1911, all steel, .45acp magazines. Most certainly, they are not used for conceal carry, but as spares, they easily provide extra rounds of firepower.

I have used 10 & 14 round extended 1911 magazines many time at the range and they work flawlessly.

I'll update this in the first post, but I'm not considering the 1911 in this discussion.

Meh depends on the day, I prolly carry my LC9s 7+1 more than my CW45 cut for PM mags so 5+1 but that's mostly because it's a few oz lighter. The last few days I've carried neither as I also have a Walther PPS 40 that's 6+1 that's been on duty.

Both will kill you in a split second. With that said, are you really going to claim there is as much size and mass difference between a .45 and a 9mm as a VW Golf and a Greyhound Bus? Really?

George Zimmerman did okay with a 9mm, and that was a single shot from a 9mm.

1 shot vs 1 shot there is no difference in terminal performance between 9mm and 45 ACP. I'd use the one I shot best.

Gents, the OP asked a question, and in his question, he clarified that the 1911 design was not in consideration.

I checked out this thread, as I am going down a very similar line of questions myself... but a question I have for the OP, is "what are the reasons you have eliminated the 1911?"

I'm NOT trying to change your mind, as I've already decided I'll likely be leaving the 1911 platform behind for CC, (for a few reasons) but I'm curious as to YOUR reasons for eliminating that platform.

A Greyhound bus at 25mph or a VW Golf at 55? The comparison has to be kept accurate by including velocity.

The real issue is form factor of the weapon shooting it. I choose a P938 - best of all the combinations. The handling of a 1911 with the size and weight of an alloy compact 9mm.

It's doesn't have to be an exclusionary decision.
