Would you rather have a 9mm or 45 acp for a bedside, glovebox, defense, beater type gun?

I prefer 9mm (or .38) for everything. The cost of .45 is nearly prohibitive for me. It's really that simple.

The extra weight/size of a .45 doesn't justify it for me.

I've got a .45 at bedside, .357 in the glovebox, 9mm as my go almost everywhere beater and they all do duty as defense. It's like my wife says about me at spring cleaning time, I'm no help at all.

But, if I had to toss two of them I suppose I'd keep the .45.

I much prefer the .45 and think the 9mm is for little girls. :D I do reload though and if I didn't things would most likely be different.

All things being equal, I want the cartridge that I can confidently shoot. Yes, a 9 mm does that. Yes, a 45 ACP does that as well for me. Thus I go back to what I LEO told me about 15-20 years ago "bigger bullets make bigger holes." By the way, I'd take a rifle or shotgun any day over a pistol for self defense.

I use 9mm, .45, 40 S&W and .357 for defense guns.

IMO any major caliber will do the job if the shooter can quickly, accurately hit the target. If the shooter can't, it doesn't matter what caliber they are missing with.

For a bedside, glovebox, defense, beater type gun? I'd rather a 38 special. With a 4 inch barrel.

Why? Because I carry a smaller 38 special 90% of the time and I'd rather the beater gun share a caliber.

.32 in my pocket:p
as for caliber wars, come on, it's passe, been there, went back, around the corner,

it's already done, people shoot what they want to, what they like....

So get over it, maybe you 'favorite' doesn't make every bodies list, go eat some ice-cream and cry cause there is more than one choice...

I liked .45 better - and had several guns in that caliber - when practice ammo was $9 a box. Now that it is double that, not so much. The application in which it is used has no bearing.

9mm is the logical choice. Not only does it afford higher capacity in a smaller and lighter pistol, it is also more readily avaliable and Vastly cheaper.

The 9mm vs 45acp debate will never end. I have both. Problem solved.

Yep ... and me too ... but I prefer the .45 ACP.

I reload for both so the cost difference isn't a big deal for me.

:)

I'm a high cap guy, so 9mm.

I'd rather have ammo left when it's over than run out of ammo before it's over.

45acp in my nightstand,
12 gauge by my bed,
357sig on my side,
.380 in my pocket,
9mm in my glovebox/toolbox,
45LC/.410 for the mountains,
.40s&w as backup to everything listed.

for a bedside
How times have changed, especially for the maligned .45acp. For home defense where misses are especially relevant; where are the "You can't use a heavy, large caliber because it will go through your flimsy walls and penetrate Aunt Tillie's bungalow next door, perhaps striking her..."
Strange, I argued against this logic demanding proof through testing or show some documented evidence of this occuring...Never had any takers on that one....:( BTW, I'll go for the caliber you are proficient in.....hmmm, how about a S&W 500....
