This is a general information thread. This could help many THRoader's by letting them know what state/city allows what and what opportunities there are for residents of said states.

This could effect moving decisions, job relocations, and school choices.

I'll start:

Texas (Houston/Austin areas)

Positives:
-Cash and carry state, no official record needs to be made for private transactions (18+ok).
-As far as i know, no bans on hi-cap, pistol grip (assault characteristics bs)
-Issues CHL's
-Pretty good gun shows

Negatives:
-No open carry
-No public land for which to shoot on (most of Texas is privately owned)
-No extremely good gun shops in Houston
-Haven't been to a range i've been extremely impressed with
-Pretty crime ridden on both major cities (to be expected)
-Harris county hates citizens having guns, legal or not.
-Too hot to go shooting at outdoor ranges in the summer.

Side Note: Born and raised in Sugarland, voted 2nd best place to live by CNN. Not much crime, open roads, clean city. Fort Bend county also one of the most diverse in the Nation. Good Chinatown (I'm Taiwanese).

Your turn! I'm extremely interested in Arizona and Vermont.

In PA you dont have to have a waiting period to buy a gun. A bad thing is you can't use autoloaders to hunt with i think.

I love Montana's gun laws, very liberal (in the true definition of the word, not as has been bastardized by the "liberals".

No real negatives. CCW is easy to get, concealed carry while outside of a city does not require any permitting.

MD:

You can't have a gun in your car unless one is traveling to or from a range or Gunsmith without stops. As I understand the law, stopping (say at a 7-11 for a soda) on the way home, if found out, is BIG trouble.

Infuriating! Normal living has been criminalized.

For my primary state of residence:

*Lots of rednecks who like guns
*Open carry
*Against state law for localities to outlaw OC
*Shall issue for ccdw, easy to get
*Good, varied hunting for free or cheap
*Ammo apparently cheaper here than in many places
*No handgun permits
*castle doctrine/stand yr ground laws, good statutes and case law for self defense

Cons:

--still beholden, in practice, to federal gun laws
-- No good local gun shows
--Ak's more expensive than a chicken

In Nevada, 99% positives with the exception of the registration of handguns that Clark County alone requires. That's a big 1% negative to my mind, tho' I meekly comply.
I do wish that people who go out into the BLM desert to shoot would police up all of their brass, hulls and wasted holed appliances.

Illinois

Negatives

-Every year, more and more anti-gun legislation proposed.
-CCW prohibited
-No open carry
-must have a FOID card. (Firearm Owners IDentification)
-24 hour wait long guns/72 hour wait for handguns
-not many public places to shoot (but quite a few private clubs)
-no NFA weapons allowed

Positives
-It's not China?

Some of the same...

Reno NV

Positives:
-Cash and carry state, no official record needs to be made for private transactions (18+ok).
-As far as i know, no bans on hi-cap, pistol grip (assault characteristics bs)
-Issues CHL's
-Pretty good gun shows
-No laws about transporting a firearm in a veh
-BLM in every direction

Negatives:
-No open carry in Reno
-Barely any CCW reciprocity

Colorado
-Liberal CCW
-Machineguns OK
-Many shooting competitions, IDPA, IPSC, 3-gun, etc.
-Good gun stores
-Lots of public land to shoot on
-Castle doctrine

Cons
-It's getting more leftist with the current governor
-Must have a CCW from here if you live here

PA, isn't to bad when it comes to firearms, I don't think. Open carry and concealed carry is allowed. Most types of firearms are legal to own, but not for hunting purposes.

Arizona;

All positives...... tryin to think of any negatives and can't come up with any..

Ya can basically carry a long gun or handgun anywhere in the state either openly or concealed (CCW for concealed) anywhere ya want except federal buildings, bars and schools, in your vehicle a handgun can be concealed or not anywhere in the vehicle provided its in a holster or case loaded or not doesn't matter..

No restrictions against any type of weapon if ya can legally buy it then ya can have it and shoot it here.......

People are so accustomed to the sight of a handgun worn openly that the only people who even notice are passing through from Calif.......

In Indiana, there are not too many things that I dislike, except you can't hunt with centerfire rifles, besides pistol caliber carbines(and thats new this year).

WA State
Pros:
Shall issue CCW- easy to get.
FAS and Insights.
No ASW BS.
"Loaded" means ammo in the gun. Full mag not in the gun is OK in a car, for a long gun, not sure about a handgun. (Without CCW)
Public land for hunting.
Just about any non-dbl edged knife is OK to carry exc in Seattle.
People who shoot criminals don't seem to get in trouble for it (anecdotal- no hard statistics).

Cons:
No full auto (can't afford it anyway).
Norm Dicks, Jim McDimwit, Patty Murray constantly elected to afflict the Republic.

I tried to think of any negatives, but came up blank.

* Castle Doctrine
* No duty to retreat
* Open carry legal (no permit required)
* Shall issue, and permit received fairly fast
* No limit on firearms. Permit not required to own.
* Permit is CCDW, covers a lot more than firearms
* State preemption of gun laws
* Very few places you CAN'T carry
* In locations where state law allows carry, no firearms allowed signs are meaningless. You can only be asked to leave.
* Reciprocity with every state that recognizes KY permit.
* KY is a VERY gun friendly state.

I live in California, it sucks for gun laws. I guess one good thing is that I live in a Shall Issue county for CCW.

Florida
The good:
CCW commonly accepted 420,000 permits second only to PA
State Parks,National Forests,Wildlife Mgm. Areas OK
Car carry without permit OK if concealed in glove box, console or zippered case.
No restrictions on rifles, shotguns and "assault weapons".
" " " machine guns with Fed.License.
Uniform laws throughout state,preemption law.
Signs have no force of law
Castle Doctrine Stand your ground law
Reciprocity with about 31 states

The bad:Off limits areas
Schools K-College
Police Stations
Bars 51 % rule in restaurants
Courthouses
Non sterile and sterile areas of airports

The ugly:
No open carry

Nebraska

Pro:
Finally have CCW
Open Carry
$5 purchase permit good for 3 years
No permit/registration to own (in most places)
Lots of places to hunt
NFA Legal (I wouldn't say Friendly)

Con:
No ccw sign regs. (Write it in crayon and you're fine)
Omaha requires registration AND permit to open carry
No preemption for CCW (patchwork of off-limits cities)
Overwhelming "Fudd" mentality
No reciprocation with other states' CCW
No castle doctrine
Game & Parks Commission doesn't return e-mails
Open carry will get you hassled

I love the New Hampshire and many of firearms it's laws, but I'm really worried about the Massachusetts politics spilling over the border.

To add to Teknoid's list for Kentucky:

* Carry in glovebox permissable without permit
* Employer cannot forbid keeping gun in car
* Pretty good hunting. We even have elk.
* I believe CCDWs issued since the middle of last year bypass NICS check

New Hampshire:

- Open carry
- Shall issue CCW
- no waiting period
- cash and carry
- no hi-cap magazine restrictions
- no registration
- no limit on number of firearms purchased

Maryland the land where criminals can conceal carry but you cannot, when it applies to protecting your life. Oh they will gladly take your money when you apply for a CCW Non refundable.Transporting cash for a business yes but not protecting your life. Selling handguns require the Maryland state police, stop in fill out their paperwork with both parties. Maryland firearms task force. State Police stepping in and giving Wallmart or vice versa a list for you to fill out each and every time you buy ammunition from Wallmart. I have noticed that it seems a mystery as to why there are so few firearms dealers in this state. My presumptions are Md wants it that way.
