Why do you love/hate your State (in relation to firearms opportunities)?

Ohio

Pros:
-No waiting periods
-No hi-cap magazine limits
-No AWB nonsense
-Open carry technically legal (not illegal)

The cons:
-Have to be 21 to CCW (I know some states, like Indiana, let you carry at 18)

Can't really think of any other bad things about Ohio gun laws.

NC- have to apply for a permit to get a handgun, with three signed affidavits attesting to your charachter
CCW permit bypasses this
Got mountains on one side and beaces on the other-that's good, right?

PA

Overall a great gun state. CCW permits are shall issue, take about 15 minutes and cost only $20 every five years. Open carry is legal

No FFL needed for P2P transactions of long guns.

NO AWBs. Not too hard to get LEO signoff on Class 3 permits if you pass the B/G check.

Very strong history of gun rights. Gun ownership is a very clearly protected right in teh state constitution. Lots of support for gun rights in the state legislature. Philly liberals are kept in check by common sense Dems and Repubs in the rest of the state.

Lots of places to shoot. Camp Perry is only one state away. Lots of public land to hunt.

The main minuses for the state are that you can't hunt anything with a semiauto riflle. (not completely true) No magazine limits. I can use the 10 round mag in my 7600, but can't use a 7400. The only exception to this is that you can use a semiauto "if the semiautomatic action has been disabled in such a way that it cannot easily be converted back to fire semiauto in the field." This means that I can hunt with my Garand if I install a drilled out gas cylinder screw valve.

Thats really the only minus I can think of as far as guns go. Other than gun-wise, this state pretty much sucks, but its the "Gun Capitol of the East" Just ask Michael Bloomberg.

Knotthead and Tekoid missed this one for Kentucky:

Its the only state with a type of wind doping named for it. :)

One more for PA (at least my area):

*Gun shops abound. There are four or five decent gun shops within 15 minutes' drive of my house.

*Three public, three private shooting ranges within 15 minutes drive. Plus my extremely private range :D

Georgia:

Positives:
-Shall-Issue concealed carry.
-Can have gun in car without permit (subject to some storage restrictions). No restrictions for permit holders.
-"No guns allowed" signs are meaningless.
-No goofy waiting periods or 1-gun-a-month laws.
-No magazine capacity limits or AWB.
-State preemption of local gun laws.
-Class III OK.

Negatives:
-Concealed carry permit not worth the paper it's printed on. There are more places off-limits by statute than permitted. Ie. Restaurants serving alcohol, public transportation, church, concerts, sporting events, any building operated by taxpayer funds (like rest stops or park bathrooms), schools--including private colleges and "public gatherings" (whatever that means) are all prohibited.
-Permit is sort of expensive for what little carry opportunity you get (~$50, good 5 years). Also now no renewals, have to repeat the entire permitting process upon renewal. It may take 3-6 months, depending on county.
-Atlanta mayor (Shirley Franklin) is a member of Bloomberg's anti-gun coalition.
-No public outdoor shooting ranges in the Atlanta area. All of them are exclusive clubs that require $$$$ and invitation for membership. Clubs frown on pistols and EBR's ("Fudds" only). There are, however, several public indoor pistol ranges.

Tn

No carry in restaurants that serve alcohol.

No carry in state parks. Tried to have that changed but libs got in the way.

This one gets me flamed a lot but here goes anywhoooo.
A no guns posted BUSINESS can get you a $500 fine if you are discovered. In some other states, it may go down as a trespassing or disturbing the peace violation if you are asked to leave and refuse. Yes, I know that a business should have the right to restrict firearm carry but in doing so, they remove my right of my choice of self defense and yes, I can walk from that business but sometimes you are a captive audience and that option is not that easy.

I would like to see the state relax its fines and punishment in this area but I know it just ain't gonna happen.

Many of these businesses have illegal signs posted (in Tn. there are specific rules as to size and verbiage of the sign) but I would not want to be the poster boy test case on that one.

Pennsylvania Constitution Article I Section 21

"The right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the State shall not be questioned."

Per capita PA is second only to Texas in gun ownership.

But we're working on it.

:D

NY

Pros:
  • Most of the state is "shall-issue" for CCW (issuing goes by county)
  • CCWs are good for life.
  • No duty to inform LEOs (and they don't have it in their car when they run your plates)
  • Gun clubs/ranges every 10 miles or so in each direction (I pass 3 on my way to my favorite
  • You can carry anywhere except courthouses and schools (unless picking up or dropping off students and faculty, or if you have permission otherwise)
  • No businesses are posted off limits to guns( not legally enforcible (trespassing notwithstanding), plus you just don't see it here)
  • No waiting periods except for the purchase coupon thing on handguns, but again that varies by county

Cons:
  • CCW issued by county judges
  • No "stand your ground" laws
  • AWB never expired
  • No Class III

For purposes of this posting NYC is considered a separate state

Out here in Dallas, your negatives are a bit less:

Negatives:
We have several really good gun stores (Bachmann's gun and pawn)
Have some great indoor ranges. (Bullet Trap, Targetmasater, and DFW Gun)
The DFW Counties Area seems to tolerate CHL'ers more so than Harris County does. (Denton, Tarrant, Dallas, and Collin County)

The only thing I really wish for is open carry, but hey, coming here from California, I'm not going to complain too much.

I live in California. Enough said. However, the city I live in is as good as you can realistically ask for in California. Couple good shops local and a periodic place to use them (Sac Trapshooting Club got shut down though. Made me thoroughly angry). Cops don't seem to hate on gun owners which just so happens to be most people.

I like PA too...as long as NJ, NY, or Philly dont ruin it by getting the gun laws changed :fire:

Failure to immediately inform a LEO that you are carrying means goodbye guns for life. That one pretty much sucks.

There's that too. But, since I can't CCW yet (Only 20! :fire:) I don't know a whole heck of a lot about the laws around CCW here in Ohio.

Florida. Lots of gun shops, lots of guns. You can buy pretty much whatever you want without any state restrictions to speak of, easy to get a carry permit, good reciprocity. Even without a permit ok to have a gun in the car, securely encased (can be loaded, but has to be in a holster, glove box, console or case).

Definitely not enough places to shoot.

No open carry, not that I would, but it would be nice to know I wouldn't get arrested if someone saw my concealed carry gun.

Too many people down here form the northeast cities who think guns are inherently evil.

Michigan

MICHIGAN:

PROS:
Shall issue
No "approved firearms list" to contend with
State constitution supports the RKBA
We have CPL reciprocity with most states (except the really crappy ones)
Lots of hunting opportunities (if you're into that)
Open carry technically is not illegal in and of itself

CONS:
Need purchase permits to buy a pistol (unless you have a CPL)
Open carry technically violates the "passive brandishing" law
Can't own suppressors
CPL not recognized in anti-gun states (e.g. CA, NY, etc.)
Can't own automatic firearms

Maine

take the list for NH noted above....

- Open carry
- Shall issue CCW
- no waiting period
- cash and carry
- no hi-cap magazine restrictions
- no registration
- no limit on number of firearms purchased

and add to that...

-very strong constitutional protection (see my sig line)
-strong sporting and gun ownership traditions
-"Castle Doctrine" extended to you're property and out buildings
-just about every little town has a rod n' gun club with an outdoor range.

Now, as noted by NH guy above....can we just get the Massachusettes people to stay in Massachusettes and possibly get Portland (liberal yuppy city) to fall into the sea?

Arkansas

Pro:
CCW including restaurants w/alcohol
No certain # of guns limit on CCW license
Outdoor range 15 min from my house, $2 to shoot all day
Indoor ranges 35 min & 1 hr, respectively, from my house. The one 1 hr away goes to 100 yds.
Generally gun-friendly culture
Numerous hunting opportunities
Others I'm probably forgetting....

Con:
No OC, although if you're out in the woods you probably won't get hassled about it by LE, I haven't.
Silly "if you shoot your CCW qualification with a revolver, you can only carry a revolver" rule.
Signs posted by establishments to prevent CCW don't have to be a specific kind of sign, as far as I know. Just has to be "posted conspicuously" or something to that effect.
Out-of-staters automatically assume you must've voted for Billary, twice.:fire:
Again, others I may be forgetting, help me out here Arkies.....

San Diego

positives:

weather is good for year round outdoor shooting

nearby private outdoor range is cheap ($100/yr), allows any safe target (cans, etc), any legal firearm and has no ammo restrictions (AP, .50 BMG, steel core, etc is OK).

That's about it.

Negatives (no particular order):

No-issue CCW for common peons
1 handgun/month limit
10 rd. mag limit
10 day wait all gun purchases
no loaded guns in vehicles
private sales must go thru FFL
$25-30 background check fee
$25 handgun safety certificate needed to purchase (good for 5 years)
AW bans
.50 BMG ban
machine gun ban
many models of handguns not available due to the "drop test extortion scam".
Can't mail order old handguns with C&R FFL
Gun rights in serious jeopardy any time legislature in session (which is most of time).
Lately they are going after semi-auto handguns and ammunition.
gun shows ho-hum
no really good gun stores

Probably forgot some.

VIRGINIA

Lots of +'s here, but my last state was NY so there you go

we have:
the castle doct.
we're shall issue
permits are fast
we're class III legal
no permits for open carry

cons:
there are lots of gov't banned areas
we're too close to DC, at least I am

all in all, we're not NY

I am generally dissatisfied with Connecticut, but we really could be a lot worse.

Pros
*State delegates to federal law on SBS, SBR, AOW, and suppressors.
*Machine guns are allowed
*No mag-cap limits
*The state allows the free private sale of long guns between those 18+
*A lot of gun manufacturers and shops
*Ranges available in most parts of the state, shooting events are plentiful, and we have several gunshows per year

Cons
*Permit required to purchase a handgun
*No select fire MG's
*No assault weapon features (same as the 1994 ban), unless the firearm was made preban, AND is not a named model
*14 day waiting period on long gun purchases
*private handgun sales must go through state paperwork and NICS process
*Discretionary issue pistol permits (though most CLEO's work on a shall issue basis)
*Lefty's love sueing ranges and coming up with rather creative reasons for doing such
*72 hour theft reporting law
