Why is the 45-70 so popular?

Do not have a 45-70 - yet! I do have a Uberti 1876 in 45-60. Love taking it to the range. My next rifle is going to be a lever action in either 45-70 or 38-55.
yep I want that new marlin model 1895gbl in 45-70 I think this rifle is cool looking! but for now I just ordered a new fangled savage axis in 243 left hand bolt action rifle as I am a lefty lol! so here comes the 6mm bullet fun!!

Why is the 45-70 so popular? Someone said it nicely when they said it's fun. It really is. It's easy to load for and can be loaded for a full range of activities from Cowboy action, to deer, to large dangerous game. I think Wild West Guns custom rifles fueled the resurgence. They were top quality rifles that were gorgeous as they were functional. When Marlin started making their Guide Gun at an affordable price, the popularity really took off. The common man could afford a "Wild West" style gun. The Guide Guns were capable of ridiculous accuracy too.

To my OP neighbor from Houma, That Ruger #3 was known for being very hard on the shoulder. 1895s don't get unpleasant until you start pushing heavy bullets at higher velocity. The guns are handy, fast handing and accurate. The cartridge is versatile and very effective at the kind of ranges most people shoot.

AMEN!! :)

I came of age when light bullets and high velocity were king. I have, in fact, never shot a rifle with a bore larger than .308, so I thank you for a very interesting and informative look into the world of the 45-70.

You highlighted something else I intended to mention in discussing the popularity of the 45-70. Its resurgence began as the lust for uber magnums began to wane. We had pretty much pushed the envelope for velocity and trajectory. Being that interest is somewhat cyclical, it was natural that we started looking away from flat and fast. Enter the 45-70. The Creedmoor is a continuation of the trend of faster isn't necessarily better.

And you know, I'm not missing them one bit. I can't for the life of me figure out what some of them are for - in what hunting scenario would I use one? If I really want to play elk sniper, I'd like to be in .264 WM or 7mm mag at the biggest - I want the highest possible BC, and increasing diameter is not the way to get there. I can't for the life of me figure out what say a .338-378 Weatherby is actually for, other than hurting your shoulder.

If you guys keep talking about 45-70 it's going to cost me some money.

Ruger No. 1 keeps calling me.

So have some mercy and close this for cryin out loud.:(
if you want to pay a lot for a single shot which will hammer your shoulder, be my guest lol. a repro sharps or similar rifle will weigh more and allow you to be comfortable shooting it

Just get it over with and buy one. It's only money. And money is meant to be spent. Might as well spend it on something that makes you happy. And the right 45-70 will accomplish that.
true indeed!! :) I just ordered a new savage axis bolt action left handed 243 but after I get over this a marlin 45-70 is coming soon!! :):)

Can't decide now, I also want to get a contender g2 carbine. I will have to see one and see if I fall in love with it or not. I sure like my contender pistol.

that Henry looks like an H&R for 3 times the money and it looks to light. H&R made a 45/70 called buffalo hunter had peep sites and I think a 30" barrel that one would tame recoil
