"It's a pretty tragic situation here," said Forest County Supervisor Tom Vollmar, who lives just outside Crandon, where the shootings occured. "There are five or six people dead."

Other details were not immediately available. Messages seeking comment were left with the sheriff's office.

The neighborhood where the shooting occurred has been blocked off, Vollmar said.

The northeast Wisconsin city of about 2,000 people is about 225 miles north of Milwaukee. The area is known for logging, and fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Just saw the thread on the crazy knife wielder in NYC. Which story will get more news attention?

Crandon, WI: Officer Fataly Shoots 5+ Young Adults

Details still really sketchy, crazy situation though. Apparently it all happened around 3am at a house party. The town is on gag order, the police haven't even confirmed it happened yet. Suspected shooter is a police officer who is still on the loose.

CRANDON, Wis. (AP) -- A Forest County supervisor says at least five people are dead in a shooting rampage in northern Wisconsin.

Supervisor Tom Vollmar says it's a pretty tragic situation there in the wake of the incident early today in which he says five or six people area dead.

The Forest County Sheriff's Department hasn't confirmed the shootings. And messages left for the sheriff haven't been returned.

Vollmar says the Crandon neighborhood where the shooting occurred has been blocked off.

Seems that a county sheriff went on a shooting spree. The rumor is that he visited his ex-girlfriend last night, found her throwing a party, I'm pretty sure last night was homecoming, and killed a bunch of kids she had over. I'm not sure on the ages of the people involved.

The word is that he's dead, too. Be interesting to see how this plays out from the "you don't need guns to protect yourself, call the cops" crowd. What happens when the bad guy is a cop?

Crandon is right down the road from Pelican Lake, where we spend a weekend or two every year. Nice area, very undeveloped. Pretty terrible thing to happen in such a little area, but seems to be happening with more frequency up here lately.

It's on CNN.com now. Well I guess all the people that wonder about when you could shoot a LEO got their day. It is terrible when someone betrays their oath to serve and protect. I wonder what happened and if we will ever know.

Let's be sure to hold our judgment. The department has specifically requested no info be released. I guess what I am saying is let's be sure we all take The High Road in this thread!

Don't know how I did that. Sorry for the double.

CRANDON, Wis. - A local law enforcement employee went on a shooting rampage early Sunday in remote northern Wisconsin, killing at least five people, authorities said.

Crandon Police Chief John Dennee, speaking outside the police department about two blocks from the shooting site, would not say whether the suspect was dead. But he said: "We're not looking for anybody anymore."

Dennee would not confirm details about the shooting, but a dispatcher for the State Patrol who declined to give his full name as a matter of department practice said the suspect is an employee of the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer for the Crandon Police Department.

Several State Patrol officers went to Forest County to help investigators, the dispatcher said.

"It's a pretty tragic

How does the whole part time officer thing work in general? Is it fairly common?

let us all send this to hillary & Barbara Fienstein & Bloomberg et al......only the LEO's can be trusted with firearms......duh! with due respect Doc; it seems some 'animals on the farm' are more equal than others.

Honestly, submitting this to anti-gun personalities probably won't be helpful at all. At best, they'll use this as an example of how crazy gun owners are (cops as they may be), at worst, they'll use this to say "no one except the military should have guns." Then they'll probably go on a spree to take away even more guns. It's sickening.

It'll be interesting to see how Gov. Doyle twists this to support his personal anti-gun agenda.

(WI legislature needs to grow a pair and override one of his vetoes on CCW)

Doc,

Doc2005

and what would that be Doc? Sounds pretty cut and dried to me. Part time cop goes postal for whatever reason, and kills 5.

Tragedy for all involved.

I would hope we wouldn't send it, use it, spread it around for any effect or gain politically or otherwise.

It's a tragedy for the families and community involved. I hope they have our prayers.

It is sad. Not sure of the homeowner but everyone killed who didn't reside at the residence was legally rendered defenseless by Wisconsin law, so if anything it's another good argument for ccw. I still would like to know what a part time officer is?

I'm no expert, but I do know police are unionized. And like all unions, full time employees cost a lot more to the employer than part time. I would imagine hiring a larger amount of part time officers instead of fewer full time is a cost saving measure. Again, I don't know for sure, but I do know that here in Michigan, a union-stronghold, many employers like car companies are having to go the same "more part timers" route in order to stay on budget.

CRANDON, Wis. - A local law enforcement employee went on a shooting rampage early Sunday in remote northern Wisconsin, killing at least five people before authorities fatally shot him, officials said.

A dispatcher for the State Patrol who declined to give his full name as a matter of department practice said the suspect is an employee of the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer for the Crandon Police Department.

County Supervisor Tom Vollmar said five or six people were dead, and a church official said police reported that seven people were dead. And Gary Bradley, mayor of the city of about 2,000, said Sunday afternoon that the suspect was also dead.

"He was brought down by a sniper," Bradley said.

Crandon Police Chief John Dennee, speaking outside the police department about two blocks from the shooting site, would not confirm details but said: "We're not looking for anybody anymore."

Bud Evans, 46, an elder at Praise Chapel Community Church, which some of the victims attended, said the police chief told people gathered there that seven people were shot and that one person was still alive.

One of the dead was 14-year-old Lindsey Stahl, said her mother, Jenny Stahl, 39.

She said her daughter called her Saturday night and asked whether she could sleep over at a friend's house. Jenny Stahl agreed.

"I'm waiting for somebody to wake me up right now. This is a bad, bad dream," the weeping mother said. "All I heard it was a jealous boyfriend and he went berserk. He took them all out."

The State Patrol and the Crandon Fire Department detoured a steady stream of traffic from two blocks of U.S. Highway 8 in the downtown area. Some residents stood in nearby front yards.

Marci Franz, 35, who lives two houses south of the duplex where the shooting occurred, said she was awakened by gunshots.

"I heard probably five or six shots, a short pause and then five or six more," she said. "I wasn't sure if it was gunfire initially. I thought some kids were messing around and hitting a nearby metal building."

Then she heard eight louder shots and tires squealing, she said.

"I was just about to get up and call it in, and I heard sirens," she said. "There's never been a tragedy like this here. There's been individual incidents, but nothing of this magnitude."

The small community is facing a trying time but is pulling together, Bradley said.

"We are a strong community. We always have been," he said. "This is agonizing, but we will prevail."

I think it's more of a small town thing. I grew up in North Perry, OH. The town consisted of three roads. Our chief of police was a full time narcotics officer in Painesville, OH but held post in Perry. Last I heard there were 6 part time deputies working now... The end result of alot of money and nothing to spend it on.

There's a post or two on it on freerepublic, including the name. Sounds like he went to an apartment where his ex-girlfriend was at party at 3 a.m. Sounds like they were all 17 to 20. One local said he heard that the kid then went to a nearby town to say goodbye to his parents, etc.

I posted over in Legal on something, but I am afraid it will be off topic.
FoxNews has this in their article:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,299946,00.html

Earlier in the day, Crandon Mayor Gary Bradley told FOX News that the town was under a "gag order" regarding the overnight event but no one in the town can leave church, home or anywhere else they happened to be Sunday morning.

No one can leave where they happen to be? Lockdown by the mayor?

Where do these people come from?

Where do these people come from?
My neighbor Don is buddies with Gary. He's an interesting character to say the least. Aside from these actions, he'd probably be much liked by most THR members.

Ok, I understand that a cop is capable of going on a shooting spree just like anyone else, I understand that no one was carrying because some were underage and its WI, but what I dont understand is how a WHOLE town can be put under a gag order, what about freedom of the press, what about the first amendment, and how can a gag order be issued before an issue is brought to court???
