New to Shotguns: Need recommendations on versatile bear protection gun for the bush

Thought I would start my research here on shotguns by asking you kind folks to steer me in the right direction in my search for a bear protection shotgun. My criteria are as follows: -Must have sling mounts -Most of my walking will be in steep mountain forests so it can't be too long...

    Marlin 1894 accuracy, barrel damage?

Marlin service I love my .357 cowboy and 39A lever but I have to chime in that their head office service sucks based on a recent experience. The Marlin approved repair shops that do their warrantee work is a different story, overall very good service on warrantee work by their approved local shops.

What does a gun mean to you?

Guns....ahhhh.... Whenever I pick up my lever actions I feel like in Clint Eastwood in a Fistfull of dollars. I get transported to a day in which individualism reigned supreme and a man had to be strong and ready to face death bravely. I love the fact that our governments allow us to possess...

    Do you hunt?

Posted: No hunting....please ;-) Love guns, love animals = No hunting Come to think of it, I would hunt down 2 legged predators and 2 legged varmints, but that's it, all other animals of the world need not worry.

Bullet out of chamber truths and Myths

Can anyone answer the following questions, I'm fairly new to guns,: -What happens if you hold a bullet and light a lighter under it? How much realistic danger is it to do this? -What happens if a box of ammo is thrown on a campfire? How much danger can this pose? Will it be dangerous for...

Half-cock safety on lever actions: can someone explain why it works?

I can't seem to get my head around the half cock safety on my win 94. Someone said it's the safest position to have the rifle in. Why is that? Is it not safer to have it completely un-cocked? What is the best way to carry a lever action with a chambered round? Half cock or un-cocked? I am...

    The Rifleman Shootouts

Too Cool I wonder where to get dvd's of that show. I love the way he spin cocks it. I wonder if any variation of that spin cock can be done with a standard lever. I'd love to learn that maneuver. Gotta try shooting from the hip with my lever actions. Excellent little video.

Before I develop really bad shooting habits, Which book do you recommend?

I've been a new shooter for about a couple of months. I've only bought lever actions: Marlin 39A, Marling Cowboy .357, Win 94 30 30. For some reason it's the only rifle type that appeals to me. I only target shoot-no hunting. Other than the safety instruction I received in order to get...

Marlin 1894C VS Marlin Cowboy in .357: why such a difference in price?

Does anyone know why there is such a difference in price between these 2 rifles that look similar? Is the Cowboy model much higher quality? In what way? Thanks.

Talk me out of : Win 94

94 I have a 76 win 94 30.30 and a marlin 39a .22. I am fairly new to rifles and guns and may not be comparing apples to apples but the 94 is the most "perfect" feeling gun I have ever held. it balances perfectly in the hand and is lighter than the marlin. It just feels like it's all business...

Uberti 1873 Border Model .357 Magnum: just a purty rifle or can she cook too?

Is this a serious shooter's rifle? What is the consensus on Uberti quality? I sure do find her pretty, but is she reliable and well built? I'm also looking at the marlin 1894C. Which one is better? Thanks

New Member? Introduce yourself here (just intros, questions get answered elsewhere)

Howdy I'm fairly new. Developed an interest in guns just after buying a chunk of land in the country last summer. I'm 47. For some completely unknown reason, I have been attracted only to Lever action rifles. I have no explaination for this. I never noticed the type of rifles used in cowboy...

How far do you shoot with open sights?

OT: Matt man Does the steel have to be thick enough so that the rounds do not penetrate or does it still "gong" when when the metal is pierced? (Maybe I should just start a fresh thread on gongs)

How far do you shoot with open sights?

OT: Gongs Sorry to go off topic here, but can anyone send me a link to what these "gongs" look like and what they are made of? Also, do you hear the gong if you are wearing ear protection? Sounds like it would be fun to hang one of these gongs about 300 yards away on the next mountainside and...
