Sometimes I carry a 1911 with a 4-inch barrel. I've been thinking about getting a Colt's 1911 Commander in 9mm. Anyone else use these for cc, or is it mostly a fun range gun?

A 9mm Commander is probably going to be my next 1911. I wouldn't hesitate to carry one if it was a reliable and accurate weapon in my hands.

If you're comfortable and have developed the correct muscle memory protocols in safely employing, and executing a 1911; then by all means carry one.

There are so many good micro 9mm handguns on the market whose manual of arms is superior for cc I wonder why anyone would want a clunky 1911 type.

Because some of us are just as smart as a farm boy in the 1930's with a seventh grade education. Apparently, some recent handgun users do not feel themselves up to that standard.

Well, I have been off the farm for a while, but if I am going to carry a big piece of heavy iron, it will be in .45 caliber. If 9mm will do, there are lots of guns in that caliber that are smaller, lighter and will be just as effective.

My maximum size carry gun is a Commander - original lightweight.
Mine is a .45 and the recoil has become oppressive such that I don't shoot it with anything but barely Major power factor ammo.
It would be nicer if it were a 9mm, and I have looked at the new run of Commanders and the SA RO Champion.

A Colt's Lightweight Commander in 9mm is an ideal carry pistol ... for me. If you're not wrapped up in magazine capacity and you're a 1911 guy, you already know that a Commander-length 1911 in 9mm is a terrific platform for carry yet is fun all day long at the range as well.

Delford, I can't speak for others but I prefer the 1911 for several reasons. It is single action, and the single stack magazine makes it comfortable and, if necessary, concealable. And the weight eats recoil, making it very comfortable to shoot.

Jim, the Combat Commander was introduced because so many people had the same complaint about the original lightweight Commander. It is the same as the lightweight version but with a steel frame to better handle the recoil of a .45 ACP.

My lightweight 1911 is a .38 Super Colt Commander convertible; just add a 9mm. barrel assembly and magazine to it and I'm good to go. Very comfortable to shoot and very easy to carry concealed.

Had a Springfield EMP (3") for many years. Was my typical carry but I moved to something just a bit larger with more capacity. Been a great gun but will probably sell it soon.

Yes, I know. In fact I own one of those, too.
There was a pretty fair cottage industry in the 1960s cutting GMs off to Commander length. Colt cashed in.

Granted the full size 1911 is heavy, but honestly with a good holster, it hides as well or better than a lot of other frames on the belt. The first weapon I cc'd was a G23 back in 1996... and it HAD to be hidden...applying those principals is much simpler with a FS 1911...and the the 5 in barrel certainly takes better advantage of a rounds ballistics.

With that long paragraph written, lol, the 9 mm in 1911 is certainly viable as a defensive choice, especially in Commander and Officer size weapons. Bill Wilson himself has taken that route, and were I to go to with a smaller, lighter 1911 frame, I might well consider it.

I don't think anyone is denying the 1911 is a good choice as a SD handgun. If it weren't it wouldn't be around for over 100 years. What I am reading though is, if you are going to carry a heavy gun you might as well carry it in 45 ACP, not in 9mm. I tend to agree but I also like the 38 Super like I said above.

Nothing wrong with a 1911 ltwt cdr in 9mm. I prefer .45ACP, but my wife prefers her 1911 in 9mm. Yet we still manage to get along despite such weighty disagreements.

If you want one in 9mm, run with it.

Bought one at my LGS. Stripped it at home and the recoil spring was really stuck to the guide rod. Like you'd deform the spring yanking on the thing to get it off the rod. Anyone else encountered this?

That sums it up nicely!!! :neener:

Aren't there reliability issues with many (if not most) of the 9mm 1911s on the market? Especially the smaller models that lend themselves well to CCW?

No personal experience - so I'd appreciate input - but of the numerous reviews I've read covering multiple manufacturers, it appears they're pretty finicky.

The 9mm 1911 has historically been less reliable than versions in .45ACP or .38 Super since the 9mm round is shorter than the others and some magazines weren't up to the task of reliably feeding the shorter round. However, in the past few years there has been a lot interest and effort put into the 9mm 1911.

Here's a Bill Wilson video on his carry guns (all in 9mm) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scz1uWl21bM

Here's the late Todd Green's endurance test on a 9mm 1911 http://pistol-training.com/archives/8839

A 9mm 1911 is also very high on my list of things to acquire next. Likely a 9mm commander, but any thoughts on a lightweight Colt cmdr vs. Colt 1911 New Agent in 9mm?
