Would any of you feel comfortable carrying cocked and locked 1911 just tucked in waistband, no holster? My concern would be thumb safety coming off. I know there's still the grip safe, sometimes I don't like fiddling with a holster.:scrutiny:

Yes, I would.
A properly working GI type 1911 safety does not just "come off".

Add aftermarket paddle safeties, or ambidextrous safeties though, and all bets are off.

But I have carried cocked & locked GI safety 1911's Mexican style on numerous occasions for about 50 years now without a safety ever coming off when I didn't intend for it to..

Quite often, with a proper belt. I don't recommend the Plaxcio Burris method, though.

Not with an ambi safety. With a RH only safety, yes. And I have. The only time I have ever had a safety disengage was with my UC Springer with ambi safety while the weapon was holstered and I was out screwing around in the woods. But IMHO, you are better off getting an IWB holster. Protects you and the gun. I use a Galco Royal Guard.

Edited to clarify- I was not carrying in the Royal Guard in that instance. It was a Galco concealable belt holster (Marked K519T)

Just for information sake, and I know there are scores of people who will criticize me, but I carry some 1911's and some other SA autos chamber empty, and figure if I don't have the 1/4-1/2 second it adds to my draw to jack the slide, then if was my bad day. With the 40 plus years I've been packing a pistol, and the three occasions I would have been justified in shooting a bad guy, I've had time to chamber a round if I'd have needed it. For ME, it's just safer, gives me an edge if struggling for MY weapon (I know the chamber is empty, the other guy has to guess), and I can pack "Mexican Carry" (pistol in waistband, no holster) whenever I want.

Yes. You have would need three things to happen before BANG. 1safety, 2safety, 3trigger. and number 2&3 have to happen at the same time.

I have, many years ago, carried the M1911 "Mexican Carry." Never had a problem.

That said, I don't advise carrying wityout a holster -- it can be downright embarassing to have your gun slither down your trousers.

Carried one tucked in my pants many, many times, and will do it on occasion still. No big deal. Like posted earlier, the safety won't just disengage its self with out help. Assuming it is properly made etc.

Note: It was, and still is, using single side safeties without wings, such as this Wilson that I modified. I cut off the wing and rounded the front edge.

I wouldn't, just because my muscle memory has already developed for "Drawing from X position." Plus, I've an ambi safety on my 1911; if it were a GI type, then it might make me uncomfortable at first, I'd still probably do it.

Guess I'm different......who would have guessed it. LOL

I personally wouldn't carry any CCW in a manner that doesn't cover the trigger. That means in a holster that covers the trigger.

I'd carry a 1911 cocked, locked, rubber band around the grip safety, manual safety removed and so long as the trigger is covered I would feel comfortable wearing it. But put 10 safety's on it and I will still feel nervous carrying one with the trigger "exposed" Probably all in my head, but I am......different.:neener:

A gun routinely carried holsterless in the belt is the mark of the amateur or the would-be gangsta.

It's been observed that badguys seldom use holsters nowadays.

Serious CCW's use a good holster mounted on a good belt, regardless of what gun.

amen....my style as well and couldn't have said it better.

David E...

...I wonder how many years of experience carrying concealed you just slapped in the face...how many other guys who've carried 40+ years like me...how many undercover agents who carry in the belt and , for them, a holster would mark them as a cop...and cost them their lives...sometimes we might need to think before we make down-your-throat statements like yours...
