.41 Mag Association

If some of you remember my issues with my Dan Wesson 741... the ringed 6" .41 barrel... I finally have the solution!

A few months ago, I was able to pick up a 4" barrel set... which was actually my goal all along. I much prefer the 4" barrel over the 6", but I like variety, and that's one of the hallmarks of the DW's. The 4" barrel set was blued, which didn't quite match the stainless frame, but... oh, well, it's a shooter again.

To show that persistence pays... I had an eBay alert pop up on 'Dan Wesson 41 barrel' the other day... and lo and behold, a lightly used 6" vented barrel set! Of course it was blued, but like the 4" set, beggars can't be choosers... and it had a Buy it NOW! button... so I did.

The good news is... I can mount the 6" blued barrel, and still use the perfect stainless6" barrel shroud already on hand... and have a presentable Dan Wesson, again... :) No, it was not cheap, but it was cheaper than the 4" set was on GB, and I didn't have to fight shill bidders to get it.

I have 2 basic .41 pistol loads...

My mid-range load is a charge of Unique under whatever bullet I like... usually the 215grn cast SWC, but any bullet, really.

My Magnum load is a jacketed or hard cast bullet... usually the 215grn XTP, or one of Montana Cast Bullet's fine heavyweight offerings... over a near max charge of W296 or IMR4227. W296 works better in the pistols.


My primary .41 RIFLE load is...

The same mid-range cast bullet load the pistol uses... if I'm having fun....

The primary Magnum rifle load is a cast 215grn (or heavier) cast bullet over IMR4227... cast bullets because this load is usually for bashing steel, which dictate cast bullets. IMR4227 doesn't require Magnum primers, hence my choice of it over something like W296.

If I really want to get busy, then the standard Magnum load of W296 under a jacketed bullet. My favorite is the now discontinued Remington 215grn JSP, which is just a fantastic bullet... but I'm running out of those, so I'll just sub in either the XTP, or one of the heavy, hard cast WFN Montana bullets.


Marlin in the background, .41MAG loaded with a 220grn Keith bullet, over IMR4227. A true Keith bullet, with the long ogive, is almost too long for the Marlin... it tended to gag on them. They were at max COL.

they had 2 DW with 2 barrels each (not in .41) but it sold quicker than a Hot Crispy Cream donut

A lot of reasons.... In reality, the .41 is redundant against the .44MAG, .44SPC, .357MAG, and even the .45 Colt... but you could say that about any of those cartridges, save the .357 (because it goes in a medium frame pistol.) Lack of factory ammo, lack of range in factory ammo (i.e. bullet weight and/or velocity.) It did not meet it's original intended audience... Law Enforcement... because of the large-frame pistol it had to go in, and because the lighter LE load was too anemic.

As far as rifles... Marlin made 2 runs of the 1894 in .41... the early C-model, and the later (early 2000's) FG; mine is the FG. I bought it for $429... and I wish I would have bought 10 at that price. Henry made some of their levers in .41, but those are pretty few and far between from what I've seen. Marlin also made some special runs, for Davidson's I believe, of stainless, and/or short barreled .41 levers. Good luck finding one of those.

Dan Wesson also made both blued and stainless big frame revolvers in .41, and .414 SuperMag... a lengthened .41MAG case. They are not as rare as you would think, but if you find one, you better be prepared to sell a kidney.... and as I have found, if you want or need parts... you need to be a patient person.

Don't forget the "S". I believe Marlin made 251 stainless in 41 mag.i can account for 4, no clue where the other 247 landed 🙄
 
Brand new to the .41 Magnum here with a very gently used 6-1/2" Blackhawk. I ran about 100 rounds through it last weekend about 1/2 chronographing, 1/2 shooting at targets. I bought a box of MBC Outlaws and have pretty much limited them to <1150 fps with 700-X and W231.
It's fairly accurate but will benefit from having the cylinder throats opened and uniformed, like most Blackhawk's.
I did wring it out with one load- 19.0 gr. of H110 and an old Speer 220 gr. jacketed SWC.

Not sure what you're asking, but bullets are usually .410 with some commercial cars bullets sized .411. The groove diameter of my revolver is .4095", two adjacent cylinders .4105" with the other four a bit smaller, hence they're the problem children!

what’s the problem? sound like a larger .411 cylinder then squeeze down to .4095 spins right

Greg, I don't think I knew you were a .41 man...

You are right about uniforming those pesky Blackhawk cylinder throats...

Good heavens... I haven't see any of those 220grn Speers in years. That used to be my favorite bullet!

.41MAG is a good example of truth in advertising... the .41 is, really, a .410" bore.... unlike the .429" Magnum... ;)

.41 handloaders are a lucky bunch... all of our bores are nominally the same diameter, not all over the map like the .44's and some .45's can be... so a .41 bullet is a .41 bullet is a .41 bullet.

I have a 4 5/8" on the way too. I found those Speer bullets on another forum. A bullet mold will be here by the end of the week.
As soon as the other Blackhawk arrives both cylinders will be sent off for reaming.

Glad to see 41 MAG leverguns in this thread. This is mine, a Marlin FG, took a 100 lbs whitetail doe with it last season using the old Winchester Supreme 240 grain Platinum Tip load.
