At home, posting on THR instead of working.
Your car has broken down in the middle of nowhere, help is at least 12 hours away and there have been known to be feral dogs wandering about. In addition to your survival kit, which one knife would you rather have with you and why? (please discard price as a consideration)

1)Swamp Rat Knife Works Camp Tramp
2)Fallkniven A1
3)Buck-Strider Solution Fixed Blade
4)SOG Seal 2000
5)BK7 Becker Combat/Utility knife

I am considering the option of including an emergency knife with my vehicle survival kit in the boot of my car.

Oh... those are all good choices.
But I think the toss up is between the SOG 2000 and the Falk A1.
Both are super serious knives that look as good as they work.

Hmmm... I think I might lean to the SOG Seal 2000.

If you like the Seal 2000, check out the SOG21 Government Agent... it's a similar knife, but less expensive. Or you could consider the SOG Tigershark, with a 2 inch longer blade.
I think of all these, I'd get the Tigershark.

So feral dogs can break into locked cars? Man those are some tough dogs.

Tramp or Becker

Tramp for smaller hands.
Becker for you guys that can palm a basketball.

You're looking for a good shelter and tool making knife so either of those will serve nicely and since you don't have to worry as much about how much the thing weighs (it is the car knife after all) you can take advantage of the size.

I would buy any one of those knives, buy a whetstone, and then hone my knife and whittle while I waited for help to arrive. 12 hours is nothing to spend in the wild.

For a survival kit though I would go for a Becker or SWKW. Cheap, works, no worries.

You mentioned "5 great blades". Where are they at?:D I don't see a Cold Steel Trailmaster, I don't see a Cold Steel Black Bear Classic, I don't see a Bill Bagwell bowie, I don't see a Cold Steel Laredo Bowie, and I don't see a Cold Steel LTC Kukri. If we're talking feral dogs, the LTC is a better bet at whacking off a head. Kind of heads the bite off at the pass. Of course, in my car, if I could choose 5 great blades, since I'm car-portable, the 5 great blades would be a 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, a Gladius, a Falcata, a Talwar, or a Grosse Messer. But, in my car, I'd just crack the window and shoot feral dogs until I had enough to build a large enough signal fire.

I did not include CS knives in the selection because my local retailer overcharges for them by about 30-40%. The choice for me is now between the SWKW CT and the Fallkniven A1. For those of you that own both blades, which one is more durable?

Any of the above, find a good piece of wood and make yourself a spear. Not only good for doing-in feral dogs at a safer distance than a knife, but also good for vampires.

Another vote for the Becker Combat Utility, but if I could buy something besides what's on your list, I would.
Maybe something a little bigger, like one of the bigger Beckers.

I'll take my Cold Steel Boar Spear. After 5 minutes, the question will be: "5 Great Cigars; Pick One---Macanudo, Cohiba, Punch, Sancho Panza, or Fuente" while I wait for the signal fire from the pyre of feral dogs to alert a tow truck.

Sir Galahad- A man after my own heart! I really like the Macanudo but a good real Cuban Cohiba is a great cigar as well. The Dominican Cohibas aren't too shabby either.

Fallkniven. I love VG10 steel.

But don't overlook the Cold Steel Master Hunter. Fantastic knife for a survival knife. Carbon V requires more care, but what an edge! Also comes in AUS8 stainless. $48 at Wholesale Hunter.

Well, mine only sees SoCal weather, so I only have experience with those conditions. But, it is a coated steel, so I'd think that with a minimum of care; cleaning after use and light coat of lube on the exposed edge should take care of most climates. Go over to Bladeforums and ask around, I'm sure there are guys there who have really put their Brutes and Machaxs through the mill.

Becker BK-7 or Swamprat. Really stout knives and at very reasonable prices (too reasonable to probably not keep one in the emergency bag in your trunk). geegee

KannonFrye:

Just reread the whole thread.

You can buy direct from Cold Steel and LEO gets 10 or 20% off their prices. I have bought a couple direct and now I get the catalog to boot:p

To echo what Doc said, go to the Cold Steel website and request their catalog. You start getting the Cold Steel Special Projects catalog regularly from then on. Cold Steel ships worldwide. Wait til you see the toys available in the Special Projects catalog. And a lot of times, you can get things out of the Special projects catalog that knife dealers don't stock or haven't started stocking. You also see what's new that year. Lots of people like to blast Lynn Thompson, but as far as I'm concerned, the guy is great. He's willing to do something different and markets a product that is tough as nails and affordable. Who else is selling spears that come sharp as razors and are working weapons? Who else is selling decent swords at the price he does? Who else is selling a battle mace and war hammer that are both affordable and are not just wall decorations? Take a look at the Trailmaster. Best bang for the buck on the market. Mine came shaving sharp the whole length of the blade right out of the box. And I mean VERY light stroke SCARY shaving sharp. Barely move the blade and it's shaving. The whole 9 1/2" of blade. I got a Mini-Bushman as a free gift with an order and it's just as sharp. I got a Boar Spear and that blade is so sharp, it's scary. I can hardly wait to see what Cold Steel brings out new each year!

I'll second Cold Steel... solid knives for not a lot of coin. Carbon V needs a lot of care and effort? Uh, no. Just wipe it off with some CLP after you use it and your good to go.

Just use an old rag... it can slice a new rag to ribbons. ;)

If your local retailer charges too much check out the dealers on the net! I got the BK&T 7 & 9.

For the dogs of the choices you state I want LARGE/ BK&T 9. Got both for less than $100.00.
