IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM NRA CHIEF LOBBYIST CHRIS W. COX ON ATTORNEY GENERAL HOLDER’S RECENT REMARKS SUPPORTING REINSTATEMENT OF THE FAILED 1994 GUN AND MAGAZINE BAN

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), expressed their opposition to the reinstatement of the failed 1994 ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines. These congressmen cited numerous studies that proved the 1994 ban was ineffective, and they strongly urged Attorney General Holder to stop his effort and instead focus on the enforcement of existing gun laws.

NRA would like to thank Congressman Ross for his leadership on this effort. We will continue to work with Members of Congress from both parties on this important issue.

View the letter here.

It's great to see these Dems are supporting the truth, rather than the normal rhetoric. I thank them for the support of The Constitution.

It would behoove each of us to send a letter of thanks to our congressman, if they were one of the supporters. It'll let them know that they made the right decision.

ETA-Though he is not my rep., I just sent a e-mail to the soul Georgia signer. A letter will be sent in the next few days.

Time willing, I'll e-mail the rest.

I'm inclined to write a letter to every one of them that signed off, regardless of whether or not they represent me directly.

My computer's Adobe PDF reader reports that the pdf letter is damaged and cannot be read.

That being said, I think that this is a good news.

That is the best news of the day. Hard for the gun grabbers to get anything passed with that many dems on our side.

Awesome! It's nice to know that some people can still think intelligently and look at facts.

Copy and paste this to your computer for future use.

I have copied the body of the letter here (without the heading and signatures) because it is so beautifully written. This, in a nutshell, is what we hand to every gun control advocate every time they ask us about an assault weapons ban, or any other similar legislation. It is very succinct, straight forward, accurate, and precise in its language.

If writing to an elected official in the future, you may want to consider a quick review of this letter. It helps us to understand how we can make our arguments convincing to the letter.

As strong supporters of the Second Amendment, we were very concerned to see your recent remarks suggesting that the administration will push for reinstatement of the 1994 ban on “assault weapons” and ammunition magazines.

We believe that the ban was ineffective during the 10 years it was law, and would oppose its reenactment. Crime began falling before the ban was passed in 1994, and continued falling during and after the ban. The last time the murder rate was at its current level was more than forty years ago.

Even the Urban Institute study of the ban’s effectiveness mandated by the 103rd Congress found that it could only have a limited effect because “the banned weapons and magazines were never used in more than a modest fraction of all gun murders.”

It is hard to believe the ban would be any more effective in controlling crime by well-funded international drug traffickers, who regularly use grenade launchers, anti-tank rockets and other weapons that are not available on the civilian market in the United States.

The gun control community has intentionally misled many Americans into believing that these weapons are fully automatic machine guns. They are not. These firearms fire one shot for every pull of the trigger. Some of the guns that would be banned under proposed bills have been around for more than 70 years, and are often passed down from generation to generation.

Many of our constituents lawfully own and use these firearms and ammunition magazines that would be affected by a new ban. Indeed, these are commonly owned firearms throughout the country. Law-abiding Americans use these guns for all the same reasons they use any other kind of gun – competitive shooting, hunting and defending their homes and families.

Our constituents also have very real and serious problems that we in Congress urgently need to address. People are worried about keeping their jobs, paying for their families’ health care, educating their children, and retiring with the kind of security their parents and grandparents enjoyed. A long and divisive fight over a gun control issue will only distract us from giving these more important issues the attention they deserve.

Again, we would actively oppose any effort to reinstate the 1994 ban, or to pass any similar law. We urge you to abandon this initiative and to focus instead on effective law enforcement strategies to enforce our current laws against violent criminals and drug traffickers.

I just called and emailed Rep. Defazio's office saying that I supported what he did even though I disagree with him a lot. The lady on the phone said that she had received quite a few calls like mine today.

Of course, you realize this means a lot of guys just wasted $1600 on an AR-15 worth one quarter of that price. Not to mention all the $30 magazines worth half of that.

Unfortunately the rep from my district was not one of the signers. A shame. I may write a letter anyway asking him why he did not support the letter.

Update: I just sent him a letter asking why he did not sign the letter. If I get a response will post here.

I don't know about quarter. Certainly alot of people have been overpaying for stuff, myself included, since November. It will be a while until the prices come down, if they do, still. I am going to email all 3 Texas signers even though they do not represent my district and thank them.

You're right, 3pairs12, I over exagerrated. A good basic AR was about $700 this time last year, about $1100 now. I was being overly enthusiastic in my post. I apologize.

It's apparent here that sometimes when the blind lead the blind, they eventually get to the right place after all. Bravo.

I wrote my reps, except John Murtha. I won't give him a thanks no matter what he does. I still had two legislators on it. Tim Holden and Paul Kanjorski.

This is why I think fears of new gun restrictions are mostly bogus.

Back in 1993, the Dems controlled both chambers of congress. Then they passed the Clinton AWB and got tossed out of both chambers in the next year's election. These guys are professional politicians. The ones who survived that cut remember it well. They aren't likely to make that same mistake again so soon. ;)

No apology needed I thought maybe you were just an AR hater. :)

Well two of Colorado's five representatives signed off on the letter which is great. John Salazar and Betsy Markey will get letters of thanks from me and the other three will get letters asking why they didn't sign!

233-65=168 to go!
