Assuming an 18 year old can get a permit to purchase a handgun in North Carolina, I can't see why he/she can't buy one from a private party there.
In NC, YOU CANNOT DO A PRIVATE PARTY PURCHASE WITHOUT A HANDGUN PERMIT ISSUED BY THE LOCAL COUNTY SHERIFF.
I not shouting but wanting to make it very clear to this young man the legalities involved with this route. Also, I think that perhaps you should avail yourself to some martial arts training. Not to make you a "Bree Lee" wannabe but rather to let you experience the not so sublte reality of what physical combat is.
