I've never carried a knife for self-defense, one for utility around town and others in the woods.

After thinking about one for defense against attempted "beat downs" or other crazy CQC situations, I concluded a folder is slower to deploy than I like. So, I bought a Benchmade SOCP dagger, the 176BK.

If the situation warrants, I can insert my index finger in the loop and the handle falls naturally into the palm of my hand when I pull it out. Place a thumb over the top and it can help create distance to either run or draw a gun.

One photo shows the dagger in its sheath and the other, along side it.

We'll see how it works out after I practice with it. BTW, I live in a state where permits are for weapons, so I'm GTG. benchmade_socp_dagger.jpg

If you have a weapons permit, why wouldn't you carry a handgun? Knives have their place, but lethal force is lethal force. A situation justifying using a knife justifies a firearm.

I carry 3 levels of security. A Cold Steel cane, a 9mm, and a Kershaw Whirlwind AO, which I can open when I draw or flick open while palmed. There are times where the need to be discrete pays.

I carry pepper spray, a handgun and I'm testing out this knife.

My training experience and especially my experience with the Tueller Drill helps me understand I might still be in a life threatening situation, even after firing my gun.

So far, it's certainly accessed quickly. And it fits with enough of my martial arts training to blend in. Still evaluating it.

Thanks for giving more detail. Dagger shapes aren't as versatile as many other blades shapes, being primarily designed for stabbing. Another blade would probably be more useful for things like cutting someone's hand off your sidearm.
