Went to the gunshow yesterday when i realized I really like guns with external hammers! I guess it's petty but I'm always drawn to them. I've been into guns a long while but only have a ria cs thats really in the ccw size(with a external hammer). So whats some good ccw size guns with hammers da/sa or sao is fine. kinda leaning to the beretta 92 compact but it's a little large. saw a cz p01 that was also nice! would like to keep it around or under glock 19 size and would like 9mm

CZs are an option. Look into a Beretta M9A3 or the Vertec model as they grips are thinner on them.

I'm with you, I prefer a metal pistol with a hammer. Getting to be less and less of them, especially if you want it to be metal. 1911's of course are out there but I don't think S&W makes any in their standard line now and I don't think Ruger does either now. Sad for those of us who prefer them

I prefer hammers too, but for CC they tend to be a little bigger. The Colt Mustang variants aren't too large, if you are okay with "cocked and locked" carry. Beyond that you start getting into PP/PPK variants.

I prefer DAO for carry and appreciate the smaller size and lighter weight that it allows. For service pistols I really prefer hammers: 1911, CZ75, Beretta 92, BHP, etc.

I have a number of hammer fired guns most of which can be used in the concealed carry role. A couple of my favorites are the Colt Commander, CZ P01, and the SIG P229.

The aluminum CZ compacts (P-01 and PCR) are great CCW guns. They are a couple ounces heavier than a Glock 19, but definitely shoot better in MY hands. The bulky decocker bugged me more than the hammer when I used to carry one.

There are a brazillion such critters out there. For a half century or so my preferred choice was a revolver with a 2-3" barrel. In Pistols it was any of the Beretta 80series and currently my Pico; Sig P225 and currently my P230 and P290RS 380; Makarov; Browning BDM or HP; Star UltraStar, S&W M&P Bodyguard 380; Remington RM380s (as close to a perfect pistol as I have yet found) or a Ruger LCP (the least of these my brothers).

The CZ P-07 essentially is a Glock 19 with a hammer. Externally the dimensions are almost identical. They would probably fit in the same holsters. I like it so much I have one in 9mm and in 40.

The Beretta PX4 is another good choice, as is the CZ P01.

My favorite guns that fit in this category are all pretty much mentioned above. Cz p01/pcr/p07 and cz clones, sig p228/9, hk p2000/sk, beretta 92 compact, and the usp compact. I don’t have any experience with the beretta px4 compact, Arex zero 1 compact, or grand power hammer fired compact pistols but they all seem to get good reviews and I’m sure I’d like them as well. Wow, I never really thought about how many good compact hammer fired guns are out there and I’m sure we are forgetting something.

CZ PCR, alloy frame, no rail up front, 14+1, shoots great. About the perfect CCW if one doesn’t need subcompact and single stack.

Since this question comes up a fair bit I did a little write up looking at my experience. It specifically compares the Glock 19 vs some hammer fired competitors.

Now I am just some interwebz idjit with more money then brains so take those credentials in mind when you read.

Glock vs a Box of Hammers.

Hope it helps.

I will throw in one that doesn't get a lot of attention. The Walther PK380. The Smith & Wesson 380 M&P EZ also uses a hammer, but it is internal to the slide.

I want to thank you for that writeup. I have been looking at: hammer fired, paddle magazine release for a while. I thought the P30 & the USP (which I consider to be too large) were my only choices. I am glad to see that there is another to consider.

They do not fit in the same holsters... sadly. The P07 does somewhat fit in USP Compact holsters, though.

If you want a Glock 19 with a hammer, the P07 is your gun. I do like some versions of the PX4 Compact, but I cannot stand slide mounted safeties.

End of the day, I like SAO for carry, so it's a 1911 or Sig Legion SAO for me.

I’ve owned guns with hammers (both long, hand) can’t say I was ever attracted to them. I could use them and they worked.

Last handgun I got rid of was a 4566, if I were to get another such firearm it would be a Beretta 92fs compact.
