What rifle and caliber will you be using this year? I'll be using a Weatherby Vanguard .300 wby mag and a Savage 7mm rem mag.

Some really big deer where you live? He he. Hopefully there will be some meat left
Hey, if the man wants to practice with his elk rifles on deer, let him practice! This is America!
Exactly!

Let me see will it be the Savage 110 30-06, Winchester 70 308, Winchester 1895 30-40, Marlin 336 30-30 or the Marlin Guide Gun 45/70 and the winner wil probably be Savage 30-06 for stand and field work and the Marlin Guide Gun for working the brush. I also have a Savage 110 243 but I don't like that caliber for hunting deer as likely as not I won't be getting that perfect broad side shot so I like a heavier bullet that will get into the lung area from any angle tht I shot the deer from. I know a lot of people use the 243 but that's okay for them, I just don't trust it for my style of deer hunting.
I wouldn't use a .243 for deer either.

Why not? I've taken a couple dozen with a .257 Roberts which is a little hotter the way I handload it, but not that much. Deer fall DRT if you put it in the boiler room. It's a fine deer gitter and easy on the shoulder. I have a 7 mag, heavy, slow to the shoulder. I have a .308 M7 which splits the difference. I haven't used the 7 mag in a long time. Kinda dumb to use a cannon to kill rabbits. It is a good rifle for the open country and elk and such, but that .257 has killed whitetail at over 300 yards.

They just don't seem to be a deer gun to me, I know plenty people use them and I have a buddy who uses one.

Rifle?

Well, here is what I hunt white tail with. Actually I'm lying as I've never taken a deer with my VanGuard rifle. Most deer that I have taken have been with the 629 as most of the places I hunt deer are in close quarters. I've hunted with a handgun strickly since 1974. However, it I were to hunt deer in open country and needed a long range shot, the 300 would be it. I have taken three deer with my Kimber Custom TLE II but the ranges were 25 yards and under. I love hunting thick cover as that's where the big guys hang out.

My hunting rifles? I generally use the 629 with 275 grain Keith bullets at 1200 fps.

First 1911 white tail. Shot at 25 yards with a 230 grain hollow point. Fell dead right in his tracks.

Seven point I took in the swamps of south west Arkansas at 20 feet with a 230 grain Golden Sabre.

Actually, .22-250 is popular in Texas, but the .257 is good 'nuf for mulies as is the .243 out to about 300 yards. If you can't shoot, you won't kill with it, but hey, you won't kill with a .416, either. .243 makes a great gun for kids. Lots of folks get .22-250s for their kids, but I figure if they can't handle a .243, they ain't ready to deer hunt. JMHO, though. .22-250 takes a lot of deer in this state every year.

Yeah, I've taken several with the .357 magnum and 5 so far with a 12" .30-30 Contender. Pistol hunting is cool. I'm taking up the compound bow this season. Rifles just seem too easy.

I'll break out the VanGuard one day and kill something with it. Most have hit the wrong button when putting in the other photo. Here is another one taken with the 1911/45acp.

I'm taking a Win M70 in .300 Win Mag. 165g SST pushed by 74.1g of Reloader 22. January late season antlerless deer in Southern Iowa.

Rem 700 .257 Roberts.

Might run a couple more through the paces- 6.5X55, 25-06, 30-30

Marlin 1895 45-70 early 70s version with straight stock and Williams FP receiver sight. Loaded with Remington 405 grain JSP over 39 grains of IMR 3031. Even at low velocity it is a thumper and does not damage much meat.
