Just wondered if .40/.45 now how total market sector domination or are any PDs still managing with the 9 minimeter.

Lots.

While .40 S&W is, supposedly, the LE round now, there are plenty of PDs running 9mm and .45 ACP.

Many in my area issue 9mm or allow it's carry, but they also allow other optional calibers. NYPD is larger than many armies and allows SIG-Sauer P226 DAO, Glock 19 and S&W 5946 in 9mm.

LAPD allows 9mm, Long Beach allows it, LA Sheriffs issue Beretta 92fs but allow certain 45acp DA autoloaders. San Diego also allows 9mm.

40S&W does seem to be the thing to have nowadays though in LE circles.

Denver PD Officers choose between 9mm (124gr +p Gold Dot) and .45 (200gr +p Gold Dot).

Here in Chesapeake VA they use Beretta 92s

Not for a couple of years now. I think it was 2002 or 2003 when they transitioned over to USP Compacts in .40SW. Chesapeake Sheriff's Office issues Glock 19s or 17 (9mm for those who are Glock ignorant).

Norfolk, VA uses 9mm (+P+ if I'm not mistaken).

VA Beach also issues 9mm Glocks.

Portsmouth, VA? Don't know, but I think they're still using 9mm. Last time I saw a Portsmouth LEO, he was sporting a Glock in his holster.

Suffolk, VA is still using 9mm Beretta 92s last I heard.

None left in my county, but I know of several small departments in other parts of the state.

This is interesting, and thanks for the responses.

Maybe it's just the caliber nerd in me, but I would really like to see a listing of handguns/caliber/ammo type for the entire country, that would make for some interesting reading.

I know that the Dept of Homeland Defence has ordered a whole bunch of H&K P2000s and P2000SKs in .40 and 9mm. I'm guessing that the SKs will be the 9mm variety but I don't know which departments specifically will be issued with them.

Border Patrol is in the very slow process of making the switch from the Beretta 96 Brigadier to the .40 P2000. I'm not sure about other agencies.

Not in Raleigh NC

  • Raleigh NC police shoot .45 ACP in their S&W model 4566 (710 of them!)
  • NC SP shoot .357 SIG in their Beretta Cougars.

LAPD gives their street cops the choice of 9mm .40 S&W or .45ACP. They can have it in either a Smith and Wesson or a Beretta. My friend in the LAPD says most of his co-workers have chosen a .40 or .45 with very few still using the 9mm.

Now that is interesting. Do you happen to know what model Beretta that is? I wasn't aware Beretta offered a gun chambered in .357 (although I imagine getting a .357 for a 96 isn't hard, it would certainly violate the warranty - something PDs are very reluctant to do). Maybe some kind of custom order. I'd be interested in knowing how these are holding up if they're aluminum framed guns.

Southpaw,

Sorry... those NC troopers are carrying Cougars in .357 SIG.

Oh, and my Cougar is in 9mm and it is one fine pistol. :D
