Do you ever wonder if you have too many different types of rifles?

The obvious solution is to sell the ones you don't want/need.
Some will tell you to never sell a gun but I have no problem with it. I'd argue that it's even a smart thing to do at times.

In your position, I'd probably keep the Remingtons and the AR's, maybe a Garand or two, and liquidate the rest.

I realized awhile back that I had just too many calibers to stockpile ammo for. So I got rid of the two .308's, the 7X57, the four .223's, the .303, the 7.5X55, the 6.5X55, the .30-40, and the two .30-06's. I kept the eight 8X57's, seventeen 7.62X54R's, the 7.65 Argentine, the .22WMR, the five .22LR's and four 7.62X39's. I made similar cuts in handgun calibers to get my gun count down to just under a 100. At 25K rounds I still don't have enough stockpiled. :uhoh:

About how many or how different my rifles are, I never worry. If a situition came up, I would probably choose a rifle that was a popular caliber over one that I had lots of ammo for or one that was slightly more accurate or one that was more exotic. So it would be .223, .308 or 30-06. Depending on the situation, it might even be .22lr cal. Keep in mind that when it comes to defense, noone wants to get shot by anything, big or small, in the heart, head or the hand, the thought of getting shot is not fun. I cannot imagine "going to the mattresses" in the normal course of events. Now Zombies, that, my friend, is another matter.

just an observation: i know a lot of "collectors" and I know a lot of "shooters" but i don't know anyone who is really both.

I was talking with my bosses about this regarding hunters the other day. I told them there were hunters and there were shooters and there were a few shooters who hunted.

I know quite a few people who are all three. I guess it all depends on your definition of specialization.

I will let Robert A. Heinlein express my view of "specialization":

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. -Robert A. Heinlein-

I have and have been selling off the extra. It came down to not being able to shoot my favorite guns as much or shooting my favorites and leaving the others in the safe. I'll just stick with my fun shooters and get even better with them. I've decided I want to have a .22 rifle, a 5.56 rifle for home defense, maybe a scoped .308, and will give myself an allowance of 1 just to collect.

No, I need more, I'm deprived.

.30-06 M1917 Enfield that has been sporterized.
8mm Turkish Mauser 1903 I think.
8mm 1888 Commission rifle
8mm pre-1899 Turkish Mauser
7.62x54R Mosin Nagant M44 Carbine
7.5 Swiss K-31 Carabiner
.308 Ishapore Enfield 2A1
.303 Longbranch (Canada) Enfield No4 Mk1
.223 RRA lower with Model 1 Sales upper AR-15
.223 Superior Arms pistol lower that needs an upper.
.223 Cav-Aid 2008 lower that needs everything else.

Pardon another frank response from a relative novice.

My experience level with anything other than a bolt-action .22 began last fall (middle-aged guy: no joke..).
After falling for the prices of these used plinking rifles and ammo ( Minis, "cherry" SKS and MN 44), having just told my baffled wife that just one more rifle-a twin/ spare/investment...gun for my indifferent son as prices go up- maybe a MN 44 would make the set complete, this left her staring strangely at the floor, slowly shaking her head and beginning to babble in an ancient, long-forgotten language (Caucasian-Basque) as a lost hunter-gatherer, which has never been documented since about 3,000 B.C. Or struck by a warning from a Bronze-Age, ancient, tree-worshiping pagan Celtic ancestor.

If anybody can sell either a Basic Ruger 10/22 or a Basic MN 44 with really clean metal for about $100 excluding shipping, we can exorcise HER and lay her demons to rest. Is an Exorcist available for this price? Somebody out there has too many guns. Really good wood is not needed-just the metal.
No kidding here-just basic plinking with iron sights for this "drafted Russian peasant conscript". If I knew how to ship anything, would exchange an untaxied, unflown scale $800 FW-190 ( 4-1/2 ft. wingspan) as a substitute for a very large pile of dirty Wolf .223 and/or 7.62x39 ammo. Or for an MN 44 and 2,000 rds. of .223 or x39.

Yes, and the answer to that is that I'm currently thinning out the collection and trying to make better focused choices.

I'm selling off ones I find I'm not using and replacing SOME with a more competent ONE.

My goal is to get down to one each of rimfire, centerfire, and shotgun.

And maybe one or two collectors.

But seriously, down to a max of five.

If such a thought ever crossed my mind,I would form a cross with 2 bayonets, and proclaim in in a loud voice "Get thee behind me Satan !".
The Prince of lies tempts us,and we must remain strong and save up for new rifles constantly. My new '44 Garand arrived just yesterday.Needs an M1 carbine to keep it company.

I know quite a few people who are all three. I guess it all depends on your definition of specialization.

I know alot of hunters who shoot for a couple months a year and then put the gun up for the next 10 months. The guys don't care about ballistics and pick up a box of ammo once every couple years and thats it.

I know guys who meticulously hand load and shoot weekly but never hunt.

And there are a few who hand load, study ballistics, shoot regularly and hunt.

I know more that fit in the hunter category than anything else.

A curio and relic license 30
Mosin Nagant 69.95
Shipping 12.00
$111.95 total
Supplies are 10% off at many vendors with the license. I've saved the price of a gun and the cost of the license just on supplies.

Do you ever wonder if you have too many different types of rifles?
I have multiple of the following different types of rifles:

1. Remington 700s in 30-06
2. AR-15s
3. M1 Garands
4. AK47s
5. Mini 14s

The only two uses that I have for my rifles are hunting and the very remote possibility of a SHTF scenario.

I hunt with my Remington 700 (deer) and my AR-15 (varmint). Of course, the AR would work just fine for an end of the world zombie attack.

My problem is that I can see no practical role or use for the AK, Garand, or Mini-14s. If I were to take any of these (AK, Mini, Garand) hunting, it would be a step down in accuracy and performance. The AR or Remington does a much better job. I also can not imagine not grabbing my AR15 if a Katrina type event occurred.

Has anyone else gone through the same thought process as me on this? Any advice?

Yeah, I went through that thought process and decided consolidating what I had was best.
I sold/trade off my 10/22 and AR, neither of these served a practical purpose so it was no great loss.

I retained my M14s & AKMs and back them up with an HK/Benelli M1S90

Too many rifles? No, infact, I'm trying to decide whether my next will be another .308, a Savage Model 14 LH, or a CZ 527 LH in .223 Remington.

Yes

I have been contemplating replacing all of these but the Marlin, 870 and Rem 700 with this XCR in 6.8SPC:

Well.....maybe adding the XCR to the stable would be less painful :)

Fun? You left out Fun!

I respect its heritage and I honor its history, but nothing I own is as much fun to shoot as my M1 Garand. Some people have remarked that their AKs and Mini-14s have brought them some enjoyment, too.

It isn't wrong. ;)

That's kind of like wondering if you have too many good looking girlfriends. :D

No, I don't wonder or worry about having too many types of rifles. ;)

The only time "too many rifles" comes into my head is when I'm digging through my safe or moving 'yet again' with the Army or cleaning them for storage. It can be a PITA sometimes.

However, the prices of rifles will always go up and some things will just not be available someday (like C&R rifles). Get 'em while they're cheap.

So... too many rifles? Nah.

Too many ...
old computer parts, old shoes, car parts, dishes, remote controls, cell phone chargers, and gas cans... Yep.

i have seen some people who are a little out of control,if you go to ar15.com,click on ak47,ar15 or armory, theres lots of picture treads, one guy has about 35 of the exact same ak47 with folding stock,i dont understand why you would need 35 of the same rifle.another guy has about 35 glocks, half look like the full size, half look like the compact.also makes no sense to have a dozen of the same pistol.another picture has dozens of m1a's in racks,& its only part of the collection.how about 12 ruger 10/22's?i know a guy who's friend has about 700 rifles,at least they are all different, but it seems excessive,he would have to bring 2 a day for a year to the range just to shoot them all once.i can see someone with lots of pistols or rifles, its fun to collect, shoot & have variety, but dozens of the exact same make no sense at all.....
