GOA gets VA Veteran Gun Ban repealed.

Much of this is why when I go to my VA I am careful what I say. Especially to the usual canned list of questions. Beyond that, I am fine with the VA but just make sure you are school housed on any and all questions you may be asked, even in a nonchalant manner. I have never been asked any questions regarding firearms during any of my VA healthcare visits.

I am 100% and belong to several Veterans organizations. You seem to have an unusual trust in the government. I worked for the government. I know better.

Boy, I sure didn't intend to get down in the weeds about how the VA's system worked (and certainly don't want anyone to think I'm here defending the department). My initial objections in this thread were really only about how Fox News and the GOA (and other RKBA organizations) have engaged in fear-mongering among vets and their familiies, misrepresenting one aspect of the department's policy.
I haven’t really followed this case so I want speak directly to it, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised at this.
When the GOA sent me the email about how they had single handedly stopped the bump stock ban it told me a lot about them.. I really, really hate to be lied to.

Either way, hopefully this is a good result for law abiding, sane, veterans. Which is undoubtedly the overwhelming majority of them.

I was warned by a retired officer and member of the VFW that any veteran that got mental health counseling, lost their gun rights.

There was a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about that "law". So much so that I didn't get any help for myself when my daughter died mid 2020, nor when my son died late 2020. Then my autistic brother died in early 2022 (I was his caretaker, so involved in daily life) then in mid 2022 both sisters were killed in a car. Early 2023 I was my elderly mothers caretaker, she died in Feb.

So less than 3 years I lost my entire family, including 2 of my own children. I really could have used a trained professional to talk to.

How's that for being victimized by an ill written law that has been abused by so many "professionals" to push their own agenda?

Well I got a call from my VA shrink today. 'I told him that I didn't want to answer his questions about guns. He insisted about talking about guns and gave me a big spiel about how dangerous they are to veterans. He wouldn't let up.
If you need help from the VA go get it. Don't worry your Alexa already told them everything. They know you have a ballistic app on your phone. Just don't admit that you are incompetent.

I have been going to the VA for over twenty years and I have never, not once, seen this alleged questionnaire people keep perceverating about.
Usually the questions are verbal. But they do appear on surveys. Lucky you. I get those questions at least twice a year.

Surprise the dumocrat Home Secretary just announced a new "Red Flag laws agency".

I get asked a lot of questions to include how I feel mentally and about firearms every time I go to the VA. The nurse or doctor will ask the questions verbally and type my answers into the computer. This has happened at every single appointment for many years now.

It didn't last very long. I filed it out when active duty a long time ago. Of course I lied like a rug and everyone I worked with laughed at the idea of actually answering anything truthfully.

We never said that.

That’s the email I got, It was absurd. That’s why I remember it. It’s also when I unsubscribed so things maybe different now. It was a long time ago.
We reported that we had a lower court uphold our position and we reported on that along with the we have a injunction filed against enforcement of the ban and GOA members are protected. We never said we overturned the ban.

You clearly misunderstood our alert.

I suppose that is possible. It has been a long time, obviously. I have also been guilty of reading a “headline” and not the article, so a clickbait type headline could possibly be the source of the confusion.

I remain confident in what I remember, being an absurd claim however I admit I could have been mistaken at the time and therefore now as well..… in the future I will refrain from comment. I certainly don’t want to defame or falsely accuse anyone on our side.

Apologies for the derail.

I had my 6 month checkup with my primary care doctor at the local VA clinic yesterday. And Yes I was asked again by the nurse and doctor about my mental health, firearms and if I can manage my own finances. I was also asked again about toxic exposures too, I told them both that everything I was exposed to is already in my records

Bureaucracies favor shortcuts, politicians back doors, and interest groups raise money by raising awareness. All of these factors affect what we are told, and I think we all realize that.

What I have read about this issue was that the mere fact that a 3d party or protective payee was in place, regardless of the mechanism, was determined by some unelected official to trigger the statutory language used to deny firearm purchase or possession to those adjudicated mentally defective. The official responsible for this should be walked out of the building and out of public service forever. The jump from the statutory language to an automatic NICS entry that would stop a purchase is the horror story here. While the new legislation is good, it is relief of a symptom without treating the pathology.

Both sides of the controversy have likely overstated their case, but that is neither remarkable nor newsworthy these days.
