Thought I'd share this:

To all retail customers:

On January 2010 American Tactical Imports Inc received official notification from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and explosives that the original barrel shroud (aka: fake suppressor) supplied with your GSG 5 SD model must be replaced. It has been determined that this shroud is regulated under the National Firearms Act. American Tactical will provide a replacement shroud at no charge for each GSG 5 SD model sold or currently in inventory.
Consumers in possession of a GSG 5 SD model with the original shroud in place on the firearm are now in violation of the NFA. To avoid continued violation of the NFA, ATI asks that all persons in possession obtain a replacement shroud as soon as possible. We anticipate arrival of the new shrouds to begin by the middle of February 2010.
IMPORTANT: THE ORIGINAL SD MODEL SHROUD MUST BE RETURNED ACOMPANIED BY THE FIREARM SERIAL NUMBER BEFORE A REPLACEMENT SHROUD IS ISSUED. THE DIAMETER OF THE SD SHROUD IS 1-9/16”. DO NOT RETURN THE SMALLER CARBINE SHROUD.
WHAT TO DO:
If possible return your old shroud to the dealer where purchased and show him this notice. The shroud will be returned to ATI along with a list of serial numbers from the guns that the shrouds were removed. ATI will send replacements to the dealer for pick up at your convenience; ATI will be sending replacements as fast as logistics allow. If your dealer is out of business or difficult to reach, or you purchased your gun used, from a consumer, return the shroud directly by US mail or UPS to American Tactical Imports Inc. 100 Airpark Drive Rochester, NY 14624.
PLEASE TRY NOT TO CALL US. We will provide comprehensive information on our web site www.americantactical.us , and www.ar15.com or by e-mail to [email protected]
REMEMBER, INCLUDE THE FIREARM SERIAL NUMBER WITH EACH SHROUD OR A REPLACEMENT WILL NOT BE ISSUED.
This action IS NOT being instituted through any fault and is strictly due to NFA compliance. American Tactical will assume the responsibility to satisfy the requirements in an effort to minimize the impact on our customers and protect your investment.
We at American Tactical Imports Inc. sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this unfortunate situation.

Sincerely,
Anthony DiChario

***? Wow, thanks for improving our lives again and protecting us from evil looking fake suppressors, ATF

I have looked in the links provided. Google search is coming back nada. Is there any more info?

If this is TRUE, shouldn't the ATF be required to pay for the GOVERNMENTS' mistake due to THEIR vague, ambiguious, artificial, and silly non-sensical firearms laws...?? This would make for a great lawsuit... Looks like they don't even know their own rules (meaning the ATF).

Void for vagueness and arbitrariness....

Can we get a confirmation yes/no on this? I know someone that has one of these but don't want to freak them out if this is a hoax.

wait till someone who doesn't GET notified of this gets locked up for having one.

HOW can u possibly tell us we are wrong? the ATF let THOUSANDS of "fake, real suppressors" into the country and into our hands, and now suddenly WE are criminals......?!!

I agree. ATI and the ATF NEED this notice on their web pages' front headline.

so dumb.....just......:banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

So where is the actual ATI announcement about this?

ATI needs to do a better job of informing it's customers, maybe put it on their website for starters:rolleyes:

Little off topic, but the BATFE seriously needs to be done away with. Their tasks should be assumed by a subsection of the FBI. There's nothing more dangerous than a government agency that's trying to justify their own existence, especially when that agency is a LE agency. I've seen this first hand (not LE, but a government agency trying to justify it's own existence).

Exactly what part of the NFA is the fake suppressor violating?

Basically, they are saying it can maybe lower the decible rating on a weapon because its hollow inside, no inner tube. The SD is larger and i guess they didnt test it. Its vauge at best

They really havent given a reason in black and white.

So why exactly is this part non-compliant???

It's great that all GSG 5 SD owners are now holding unlicensed NFA weapons. Sound like a good way to make innocent folks felons. Thought the guns were neat but glad I didn't buy one yet.

Alot of the folks that bought these don't spend all day reading gun forums and may never know they own an illegal accessory.

Exactly, there are some folks that actually have a life. As unlikely as it may be, they may find out too late...this is what makes me angry. :cuss:

Saw one for renting at the local indoor range last weekend.

When they changed the Street Sweeper to NFA all you had to do was register it. Why not give us a choice, get rid of the fake can or just make them NFA and we register them and then finish the can.

Problem is in some States ..like mine a sbr, NfA, dd and full auto can not be owned. I had a Street Sweeper I had to give away to a class 3 dealer for $50 so i wouldn't be illegal. Glad I don't have a GSG 5 SD.

Thats why I posted a choice. If you are not allowed NFA, destroy the can, If you're allowed NFA, register and finish it.

wow, not to be nosy but what makes this one "illegal" unless registered vs the regular gsg5 carbine fake suppressor? it just seems bigger than the carbine version...
