GSG-5 SD fake can now NFA!!

It is almost a real can according to ATF. As it was sold it does and did nothing to reduce the noise. It's another "I own a short barreled upper for my AR but have no plans on putting it on my rifle" thing.

wow, not to be nosy but what makes this one "illegal" unless registered vs the regular gsg5 carbine fake suppressor? it just seems bigger than the carbine version...
I should keep my mouth shut, but I think that the fake suppressor (on both variants) actually directs gases away from the shooter (due to the large area at the front) which causes it to have less perceived noise than a standard .22lr with like barrel length. I noticed this when I first got mine (standard carbine GSG-5), but it really shouldn't be an issue because it doesn't actually moderate the noise, only direct it away from the shooter.

:)

As it was explained to me, ATI got atf approval for a solid fake can. At some point, ATI switched to a hollow fake can. Apparently since it is 22lr, if you drill some holes in the barrel, it will noticeably attenuate sound. The carbine fake can is still solid, and thus not an issue.

This isn't really a case of the ATF being idiots, ATI screwed up from what I have heard.

According to ATI as posted on AR15.com they have never produced a solid can for either model and were approved for the one now in question.
Can't speak for any other GSG-5s, but my standard carbine has a hollow (fake) can as well.

:)

let me get this straight... if you're willing to completely ruin your barrel, you can get some small degree of sound suppression, from your .22lr, with the hollow fake can....

so the hollow fake can is now NFA, by ATF decision.

sooper.

the reasoning for the recall:

Actually, I do have this, kind of, although the wording of the law and their reasons only kind of match up if you squint and tilt your head to the side a bit. Here is what the referenced in their letter regarding the re-testing of the shroud;

"As you are aware, the GCA, 18 USC $ 921 (a) (24), defines 'firearm silencer' as follows:

"....any device for silencing, muffling or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication."

General characteristics of known firearm silencers include:
1 Ported inner tube (bleed holes)
2 Expansion chambers
3 Baffles or washers which create seperate expansion chambers
4 sound dampening material such as foam, steel wool and other materials
5 End Caps
6 Encapsulators

The previously submitted GSG-5SD barrel shroud incorporates a large expansion chamber and integral end caps and, therefore, was classified as a firearm silencer."

That's what they said.

I guess you all can post pictures of your GSG-5 SDs now in the NFA forum. :)

OMG we dont need to abolish the ATF we need to start a new country and ban idiots from coming in and whining about dumb crap

This recall is rediculous, when i read the reasons for it I just have to laugh. Being that the rifle was made and sold as legal before the retesting which it passed previously, shouldnt the models already sold be grandfathered like semiautos before the Clinton ban?
Its simple to prove whether your weapon was a grandfathered model by the serial number and date of purchase. Now to resell falls into a sticky subject though.
I guess recalling them prevents a big mess with resale.

yea hiho its a bit rediculous to need something for the esthetics of it not so much the function but thats not exactly the point

the point is that the ATF is overstepping its boundries and banning or limiting products that are not illegal

no matter how rediculous it sounds to own a product that just looks like a working model its still a choice we should be allowed

i dont understand why we ever granted power to any organization over our arms

the criminals will always do what they want despite the laws in place

i wish there were some way to regain our freedoms with supressors SBSs SBRs full auto and the like without having to dance through the hoops of a government agency that is more intimidating than helpful

and now they are attempting to regulate things outside of there control by skewing opinions of how certain devices function

think how easy it would be for them to take muzzle breaks away because of the deffinition of silencer/suppressor redirecting gasses

it wouldnt be long after that before we see alot of guns go away for having permenantly attatched muzzle devices of any kind

and then there is the companies that just bow out and stop selling the products because the hassles are too great

think if people like ronny barrett didnt stand up for what was right

would he even sell his 50s?

and if he did who would want to shoot one without a muzzle break?

i wish the people would stop talking and perform action against these descisions

i wish the people would stop talking and perform action against these decisions
What would you suggest we do? There isn't a great deal of action we can take with regards to a decision such as described.

:)

Mav i honestly dont know im just a common man with minimal education (as im sure some can tell from my spelling)
but at the same time the gun community as a whole has to have smarter individuals than just myself contributing and there must be some lawful way to start fighting back

this is my opinion and ONLY my opinion but i dont see alot of what has happened in the last 70 years for gun laws being much good

banning ammo types firearm action types placing hoops to jump through to own anything on the "pre 86" list not being able to own anything POST 86 etc hasnt changed crime in this country one bit even if the government banned firearms all together there will still be violent crime in this country and more than likely violent gun crime

i know im beating a dead horse because all of us know this but i would love to see in my lifetime those of us that love our firearms band together and possably abolish these regulations and put the BATFE in check im not saying disband them just regulate the regulators they are over stepping the boundries and whats worse they are getting away with it without ANYONE doing anything about it

its just like the no smoking laws here in delaware everyone griped about it going through but you ask the average smoker if they voted against it and they will say "naw we was too busy that day" or "we didnt even know about it"

idk im rambling ill stop sorry for the thread hijack

Dimis, I'm not trying to rag on you, but to be honest I don't see much we can do other than express our distaste by writing our local/state representatives and supporting RKBA organizations. Don't get me wrong I want to see the firearms laws take a turn for our favor as much as the next guy, but I see no effective approach that might accomplish this.

:)

hiho, we have handguns, semiauto firearms of all sizes , shapes, and descriptions, why because we can, and we enjoy them.
But you wouldnt know what that is like in England, unfortunately for you the tyrants have taken all but a few firearms away or made them illegal.
The point is that someone chose to buy that model with the fake suppressor, it was approved by the ATF a long time ago, now they change their minds after thousands are legally owned. Its like the fake wolfdogs that some English breeders helped to create, completely legal, looks very wolfish, but no wolf in the mix.
Heck I could say "why would anyone want an AK47, or an ugly English bulldog" but thats their choice not mine to make, so I choose to keep that opinion to myself.
A funny bunch of people sits across the ocean and points at us enjoying our hard won rights.

what i ment was why would you want a fake suppressor it would just make the gun worse ?SHvar i dont no what your on about

As stated earlier, the fake suppressor does nothing but make the rifle look like it's NFA, that's it. (Kinda funny, now it is NFA)

It doesn't make it worse, if anything it takes a barrel that is pencil thin and looks cheap and makes it look like it's worth $500.

The reason they sell so IMO is because the barrel is covered up.

According to what the ATF guy told my dealer during his "visit", it's too easy to convert them to an "illegal" suppressor.

So now if something is easy, but not illegal, its now illegal....great...our tax $ at work
again. As far as having a fake suppressor on the GSG's.....they made my GSG-5 so it
snugs up the barrel an makes it more secure, as it screws in, the barrel is much more
secure, so it actually helps. Its just the way ATI designed it. By the way, I take it this
isn't for the smaller cans on the older GSG's, but the newer ones that are 1 9/16...right?
