The reason they sell so IMO is because the barrel is covered up.

Absolutely, when I first got mine (carbine version) I planned to remove the fake suppressor, however when I noticed that the bbl was supported (at least in part) by the can, and that the bbl was slender and SS I decided to keep it on. If I saw the naked bbl I wouldn't have purchased it.

I take it this isn't for the smaller cans on the older GSG's, but the newer ones that are 1 9/16...right?

Correct, the carbine versions are fine, for now anyway.
