Indian Summer Long Range Precision Rifle Match

it's a 700P. I had the barrel cut to 24" and added a beartooth comb raiser, but those are the only mods I've done. on a related note, I have ordered a new stock...so if anyone needs an hs presicion let me know ;)

The average has been a .6, so this is a good one. the key for me has been tedious handloads combined with practicing about every weekend for a few months in a row now. and lots of dry firing in between.

gun details here:
http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=461863

load is 168gr amax over 43.2gr of varget

Hope I did this one right - still trying to learn the "on target" software and couldn't figure out how to get it to print the data on the saved target, so I used my paint program to add the pertinent data text from "on target".

Was doing some cast bullet load testing Friday on the 100 yard indoor range here in Wichita and my initial 5 shot group (hadn't even zeroed the scope yet) was good enough to enter in this match, so I ran the target through "on target" and if I did it right, this is what it came up with - .382 MOA. The bullet diameter was .323, point of aim center bull, bull diameter 2" used as reference on the target. Since it was indoors, there's no wind data.

Bullets cast at .329 diameter using wheel weight lead with a little solder added to make mold fill out better. Mold: Lee 329-205-1R, nominal 205 grain. Sized to .323 diameter and using home made aluminum gas checks over 10.5 grains of IMR Trail Boss powder, Remington cases, Federal 210M Match primers. Rifle was a Russian Capture 98K Mauser with a chinese clone of a Sightron sniper scope on an ATI no-gunsmithing mount. Oh yes, Caldwell plastic front rest used, clenched fist under the stock for a rear rest.

wow, very nice kscchtrainer! certainly looks like a .3xx group to me, so I bet you did the ontarget right. interesting rifle too

thanks P51D! everyone here has posted some real good groups. very neat competition

Thanks kis2,
What was even more fun, there were a couple of maybe 21 year-old guys with AR-15 carbines that had ACOG scopes mounted, shooting at the same time and they were bragging on their 2 and 3" groups until they saw that one out of a 1940 vintage German battle rifle. (Granted I have a scope mounted on mine, but I can't even see the target @ 50 yards, let alone 100 with irons anymore.) -

I've got an old Mosin Nagant 91/30 that will shoot almost as tight groups as well. I have a load for it that's turned in a .393" group. It's got a cheap BSA Contender 3.5-12X40 scope on it and the 7.62X54R load it likes is the Sierra 174 grain Match King .311 boat tail hollow point over 42.0 grains of Hodgdon Varget. PRVI Partizan cases and the same Federal 210M match primers.

The AR guys used to really rag on my "ancient POS" until it out shot them in a 100 yard high power match. I had loaned the 91/30 to a friend for that one and he tried to buy it off me after the match. I have under 300 bucks invested in it, just over 400 in the Mauser and right now I wouldn't take less than 1000 for either of them.

I have shot the 91/30 with it's bayonet installed, and as such it's longer than I am tall. (It shoots much better without the bayonet, but certainly turns heads at the range when I haul it out of the Pelican case and "Fix Bayonets" :D

haha! that's great! as a 20 something year old guy myself, rule number one I learned is stay humble. always someone better at the game then you out there.

so... did they say they were going to sell their ar's for milsurps?;)

That group you turned in for the match certainly isn't anything to be humble about. I edited my other post to add a few comments about the 91/30. I used to run a Rock River AR with a 24" varmint barrel on it myself, and it would do one hole groups at 100 yards easily, but I reload and I got super tired of losing 1/3 to 1/2 my brass every time I shot the thing, so I regressed to all bolt guns.

I'm also a 68 year-old cheapskate, so the mil-surps, especially the old Mosin were a surprise even to me when they turned out to be such good shooters for the money. I do want a good, modern .308 and probably will pick up a heavy barrel Remmy 700 in .308 and trick it out as I get the cash to do it with.

Had a Savage 10FP in .308 but sold it because it was the later model and there aren't any aftermarket stocks to replace that POS Savage put on it to start with. The rifle was fantastic, but the synthetic stock (blind magazine) was too flexible and not even Choate makes a replacement because of that blind mag that's actually molded into Savage's POS stock. They may now, but nobody was doing stocks for it at the time I got rid of it.

Hi all,

Here's a second try, and this one with a scoring measurement reference. I'm shooting at 100 yards, with a Remington 700 R5, bipod, rests, and a low power scope.

This is fun stuff,

M700 R5 19 SEP.jpg

slightly fuzzy, but here is a pic of the rifle. I just like to show it off. It has an HS precision fully adjustable OD stock on the way. should be more comfy for me. ...going to need to sell the original hs stock...

Yikes, KSC & johnmcl! Great groups!

There are some excellent groups being cranked out here, and that is a very good thing!! :D

I need to get back out to the range and get to work

Thanks for participating everyone! I will tabulate the results over the weekend and post.

Thank you for hosting the match, klineia. Unfortunately I was unable to participate due to other obligations and weather (couldn't even shoot in this month's rimfire match but once, and unsuccessfully at that), but I look forward to additional matches in the future.

:)

Klinea, thanks for doing this. I shot a target last Monday, but have obviously been procrastinating on posting it.

FWIW, it was my best of the day, and best ever in the prone (with bipod). I'm sure it would take me a long time to shoot this well again in the prone. Honestly, I usually shoot a bit worse than this off bags.

I'm still trying to figure out this On-Target software - I need some practice I guess. It hasn't been super easy for me to use, and I don't think the group is as tight as it is saying.

Rifle is a RRA Varmint EOP, with a Bushnell Elite 4200 on top. Load was 55g V-max, 24.5g IMR 8208, LC Brass, Rem 7 1/2 primer.

Range was 100 yards.

100 yards- its in the post, and the pic.

No, where are you shooting? If it's the central part of the state and they allow prone shooting, I'd like to know.

Shot this a couple of weeks ago but my computer wouldn't let me post.

Savage 30-06, 20" stainless Savage barrel, factory trigger, Boyds stock.

110 grain Sierra hollowpoint over IMR-4831.

Right to left wind @ 10mph. 84 degrees.

Tasco 8-32x World Class with target dot.

Shot off a bench, naturally, at 100 yards.

Shot a two hundred yard target yesterday but wind was so bad I could hardly get two inch groups. Still not bad for a rifle that I got less than $550 in, scope and all.

Well done folks. I really have to make time for the next one (you do realize that you must do this for all eternity...right? ;)).

(you do realize that you must do this for all eternity...right? )

LOL. Yeah, I am planning on shooting tomorrow, so what is the target for October? Seriously, Klineia, I had a good time, thanks for doing it. If you want to go shooting some time, let me know.

Would there be any interest in an M1 Garand or old milsurp match?

Sure, but my MOA will increase at least 10 fold.:uhoh:

This was a good time, I'll do more of these.
