I got the third version of the safety prime today in the mail . It was getting late when I got home so I only messed with it for a bit . So far it is working good .

And it was gray in color?
Thanks for the updates.

Does not look gray to me . Exact part number as the one that did not work very well . I looked at the old one I have that is black and it is the same part number also .

Hopefully Lee continues to use the same part number and upgrades parts as they go along so they don't have to re-print all of their manuals.

Fingers crossed that it continues to work well for you.

Dave

Okay, thanks. Guess I'll just take the plunge. I need a bracket to go back onto the LCT anyhow. :)

Press Died of Acute Constipation!

After processing 1k of small primer 38's, I was in the middle of processing 1k of large primer .45 ACP's when the press "died of acute constipation". While I dutifully emptied the dead primer catch tube before it filled, I noticed that the catch-tube was empty after processing for what seemed a long time. I emptied it and noticed that there were very few in it ...(?) I then pulled the shell plate and discovered that the primers were gathering under it and not going down the hollow ram ... which it turns out was jammed full of dead primers! I called Lee Precision and was told that I must disassemble the press and that apparently there was something in there amiss ... They offered to fix the press if I paid UPS to ship it to them.

Needless to say, I opted to call Midsouth who cheerfully agreed to send me a call-tag and they would replace the unit.

Disappointed? Yes! I believe the unit is going to be a winner ... once the kinks are ironed out.

BTW: If you get one, make certain that you carefully examine the dead primer pathway BEFORE it jams up ... No attempt that I made with a shop vacuum, bent coat-hangers, or otherwise seemed to unclog it! Be sure to thoroughly clean the dead primer pathway before you first use the press! I used Brake Cleaner, then a scrubbing with Graphite on the replacement press ... So far: No Problems with dead primer pathway now!

Your missing the plastic piece that rides on the index rod. It is a round dished black plastic piece about the diameter of a quarter with a cross in the middle for the index rod to go through. If you pull the index rod out and turn the press sideways it will fall out. I'm guessing you probable lost it somewhere while you were setting it up.

If you don't find it call Lee, they will probably send you one for free.

Index Problems with station # 3 ...

Do you have a picture of this "round dished black plastic" piece?

Problem:

Case hits die rather than going into it ... tired several dies/cases with same results

Solution: (per Lee - Haven't had time to try it yet)

Tighten up the two 9/16" nuts on the toggle linkage to remove any "wag" from the linkage. With the linkage tightened to eliminate any side to side slop, loosen the three allen botls that retain the toolhead, insert a case in station 3, and run it up into the die, adjust the top tool head, so it enters without hitting the die. This should be done on all four stations. Once everything is in alignment, tighten down three allen bolts, with provided allen wrench.

If this sounds intimidating, please send back press and we will make any necessary adjustments for you.

To remove a case from the shellplate, simply pull case outwards, the case retainer will open for you. (this, to periodically check powder load)

Thanks,
Andy

Gave this a try ... Helps some ... but more work is needed.
Anyone else encountered this problem ... tired this?

I had the same issue as Clarke123 . Primers got stuck and did not go down hole to chute . It stopped and I did not force it . I got a flashlight to help these old eyes get a better look and I saw what was happening . Took the shellplate off got primers down the tube . Now once in a while it does not index correctly all the time . Does anyone know how to get the red cover off that is under the shellplate ? I have not tried yet . I thought maybe it was a drive gear that stripped . I called Lee but they were short handed today and busy . Thanks !

Cool video Thanks ! Got mine working good again . When I cleaned the primers out I must have set the dies wrong , reset them and it works good again . I don't have the bushings but I am going to get them .

Station 3 Lee bullet seating die.

I set the seating due so it’s seating an RMR MatchWinner @ 1.080 with one bullet but when I have all stations full and running I’m getting as long as 1.093... load one check it it’s fine 1.082-1.079 run four measure them and they are still long.

Any ideas?

I got this press early in the year.
I had same problems on COAL.
talked with Lee and he said I was setting sizing die wrong and to read instructions for "position 1 = Size", In black box it says how to set die: Screw size die in till touches, lower ram, screw in 1/3 more.

My instructions did not have this printed in them at all., so he sent me new .pdf with the newer instructions.
Also I set seating with all 4 stations filled...Just loaded RMR/MPR to 1.060. I'm getting 1.057 to 1.062...[/QUOTE]

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me with this.

I’ll give it a go when I get chance to get back to my bench later this week. I thought I turned it an extra 1/3 but I’ll reset it just to be safe. However I didn’t set the seater die with all stations full and that just may be the issue!

Thanks Again!

It is definitely the issue and isn't exclusive to this press.

You should always set OAL with all the stations filled
Good to know, I learned something today :) I’ve been loading on single stage & turret presses prior to this.

I don’t recall reading that anywhere but it’s possible I missed it or had forgotten and that’s how I got started reading manuals cover to cover. I REALLY appreciate the experience & knowledge. Maybe one day I can pass it along. I’ll be back at it in a few days when I have time to relax and take my time.

Thanks again!
