Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Waiting on my ride, 53 degrees outside.

Look at these crazy drops yesterday after sighting in at 58 degrees. Got the barrel sighted in with Lapua Long Range, got a few mil settings, and hope it works. I added some 82 degree data in the Kestrel from the other 20” barrel, fingers crossed.

Only ten folks today, cold, windy all day.....Jeff won the match, I was 6th.

I was hoping to run the Rim-X without issue today, no running the bolt slow etc.......first stage for us was the bus, two shots out each window you can't touch the seats.

3 windows and 6 shots in I was cleaning it, when the 7th round got in front of the extractor. I went from super calm to firecracker hot in .2 seconds. I lost my religion in the back of the bus.

Sigh, now to relax and shoot the next stage, did well on that one, except for the two shots I dialed wrong for. Double sigh. Had some great stages, but some so so ones. Wind was tricky, switching, changing MPH a lot. Really bit us sometimes.

The bus where I had a short meltdown.

Not me here, but when I was shooting over the white car I could see the head of the IPSC and about 4" of the shoulder.
Lobbed the little 40 grainers over the car.

Nice shooting, Is having to move that far between stations common? The ones at WestGaNRL, there is only movement at a station not between stations.

Alright guys I come to you with a question.

I am shooting my first NRL22 match this Sunday. I went out and purchased some Eley Club 40 grain to use in my Bergara B14R and sighted it in Tuesday after rifle and handgun qualification at work. As you can see my shooting setup was less than ideal but overall pretty stable. I also can say my shooting performance on Tuesday was below par for me on patrol rifle and handgun. I still qualified "expert" but below my norm. You can see from the pics that the rifle is shooting between about .6 to 1 inch 5 shot groups at 50 yards. One group was going really well except for the left flier that opened it up big time. That shot looked and felt perfect, so I cant blame that flier on me.

Im looking at the groups and on one hand think it's okay groupings for a factory rifle shooting the first batch of good ammo I purchased. On the other hand Im wondering if the barrel is dirty and should be cleaned before the match. There is about a 50-50 chance I get to confirm zero before the match. I found that my 22 cleaning rod had been broken in a car wreck at work, so cleaning the barrel before the sight in was not doable. Would you clean the rifle with the hope to conform zero before the match or would you go as is?

zeroing setup. Not the greatest setup ergonomically, but it was solid.

The group talked about above with the flier.

Yep, go as is, and don’t worry about the ammo. Have fun.

Then, after the match clean the barrel, especially if you’ve run any copper washed .22 through it. Expect to take 20 to 50 rounds to settle down, can be more.

Test four different types of good match ammo in it.

I used SK standard plus, SK Rifle Match, SK Long Range, and Center X to test mine. All the same basic family of .22 LR, so I figured no wait time to settle down for different lubes ( I guess).

Mine liked SK Long Range and Center X, but yours might like something else.

Try to catch a calm morning or evening to test.

I would go as-is.

I see a lot of horizontal dispersion in your groups. How was the wind when you shot those?

I dont remember much wind. But the shooting bay is walled in and up against a mountain, so there definitely could have been more wind at the target then where I was shooting.

Had a great time at the NRL22 match today. Rifle shot well. We were able to do a sight in prior to the match and it looked to be shooting better today than last week. I'll give her a good cleaning and go back out to shoot some groups in better conditions. There was MAYBE 2 shots that I missed due to ammunition. And that's a big MAYBE. Misses were mostly due to positional shooting deficiencies. I bombed the first stage with 2 out of 10 targets hit. One of the regulars gave me some pointers on getting a more stable position and I started doing a lot better after that. I definitely need new shooting bags. My bags just are not cutting it. Weather was in the low 50s and lightly raining the who day. Luckily we were under cover the entire time.

The wife of a friend was taking photos with her camera so I only have a few phone pictures. She is going to email the photos sometime early this week.

Jeff and I are all signed up, weather shows 2% chance of rain Sat, down from 50+ a couple of days ago........nice.

Lots of folks signed up, with some really good shooters, should be fun.

All I need to do is load, but the good news is all the brass is fully prepped & primed. :)

That’s the plan, hoping for dry weather

Which squad are you in? A guy I have been remotely helping through FB over the winter is shooting his first match this weekend with his “rat rod Ruger American.” He’s on Phil’s squad, and I already talked with Phil about keeping track of him, but dude is pretty nervous! I’m hoping he’ll hold himself together and shoot well enough that spotter coaching can help him correct to target.

In case anyone is wondering how full my Alpha Dasher cases are with 32.8 Grs of RL-155, here's a pic.

Basically up to the bottom of the neck.
Dasher Powder Level in Cases Pic 1.JPG

I am running low on RL-155 and the lot # of RL-15 I was shooting in the first Impact. It now has a new barrel, so it's time to work up a load
with the 8 pounder of Varget I bought, or try some 8208, of which I have plenty. Varget of course would be the easy button.

Have you found success with 15.5?

I have 8lbs of it sitting here. A local guy bought it when it first came out and never opened it, decided on another powder.

I'm going to try it in my Dasher whenever I start loading for it.
