Hi all - I'm moving to California (reluctantly). Am I correct in understanding that no new handgun models have been available there since they passed a law requiring special forensic markings on the ammo? I was thinking about an H&K VP9 or a Gen 5 Glock 19 (not sure if Gen 5 counts as a new "model"). Is it against California law to go out of state to buy a handgun and bring it back?

A resident of state 'A' cannot legally purchase a handgun in state 'B' and take it with him back to state 'A'. A dealer in state 'B' will have to ship it to a dealer in state 'A'.

That's a federal law.

Get them before you move into the state. If you already own them, there is no law preventing you from bringing them in.

Don't bring in any magazines with larger than 10 round capacity.
Don't bring in guns with threaded barrels

Yes. It is also against Federal law.

If you have not yet moved into California, then the suggestion offered above by 9mmepiphany is a good one.

Damn, okay, this sucks. I wasn't aware of the federal law.

What's with the magazines? Who sells 10 round magazines?

Just about everyone who sells magazines; folks like Midway USA, Brownell's, etc.

...and California has full registration for handguns (If I understand correctly).
Sometimes, when you aren't sure, it is better to not add to the misunderstanding. There are many legally owned and unregistered handguns in the state. Handguns become registered when they are purchased or transferred through an FFL.

All handguns listed on your CCW permit must be registered to the carrier...so if it isn't currently registered to you and you want to add it to your permit, you'd have to register it.

CA DOJ has a form that is required to be fill out and submitted within 60 days when you bring in handguns from out of state.

Pretty much anyone who makes magazines makes some for 10-round-limited areas. As mentioned, they're readily-available online as well as in local retailers.

You'd be surprised. Though California appears to us outsiders to be hostile to the Second Amendment, there are more than enough gun owners and enthusiasts there to drive a "Cal-spec" gun market that's just as active as the gun market in the rest of the country.

Handguns is relatively straight forward.

Rifles get more complicated due to CA AW laws for semiautomatic rifles and shotguns to some degree as well.

Post what youre thinking of and we can try to help more.... time to get cracking on understanding what's legal.

Not that it looms large for some US mfgr, but Canada is a continuing big market for 10-rd pistol magazines too.
(Canadian federal regs on magazine limits).

If you are interested in a concealed carry permit, your county of residence makes a big difference in the difficulty of obtaining it. I would expect CalGuns to be able to advise you.

This is very true.

CA CCWs are issued by the County which you reside in, not by the State...even though it is good throughout the state...so it might be a consideration when choosing where in the State you choose to reside.

My County is pretty much "Shall Issue", but just across the river it is much more difficult to obtain a permit. Interestingly, because a CCW has historically been difficult to obtain in this State, there are very few State laws limiting where you can carry.

Don't forget, you can't use lead bullets in some parts of the state.

Isn't it also illegal to haul in ammo from another state too??

Do you have a citation for either of those statements?

I've heard of not being able to use lead ammunition in certain hunting situations, but never heard that you can't use lead bullets in parts of the state...unless it is private land and the the owner doesn't want you to use it there.

My understanding is that in 2019, no lead shot for upland as well. Folks coming into the state to attend a match can bring their ammo; but the days of folks from CA mail-ordering ammo or coming over the hill to Reno and stocking up at Cabela's and Scheel's is done. Whether they will have checkpoints on Donner Summit, I doubt it; but one never knows.
