New York hunters

Well didn't got hunting today well I did, but i didn't. Got a call at 830 from my brother saying he just shot a buck and there is bone and blood.

A little background , my brother lost vison in his right eye (he's a righty) last year during a fishing accident. So since he's been using his handguns to hunt ,until he can get the hang of lefty. Anyways he's using a super redhawk 454. Shooting 300gr Underwood 45 colt ammo with an xtp bullet .

This was his first shot a deer with the handgun. We spent six hours trucking and called it quits for the day, about 25 min ago. The deer crossed into another property and headed down into a valley that is a massive drop. With the sun setting we decided it would be safer to stop. It's supposed to rain tonight so not really sure if we will be able to trail it in the morning unfortunately. It appeared to me that it was a leg shot based on the blood trail. It was quartering towards him at 40 yards. Im thinking he may have dipped the barrel a bit when he fired. So buck fever may have gotten the best if him. He feels terrible, can tell it really bothered him. Longggg day.

Sorry to hear about that and such a long trail. You might get lucky and be able to pick the trail again.

I worked 7 to noon went out after I got home. Heard a few shots but no joy for me. Unless you count the ones by the side of the road while I was driving home, I counted 15.

At least you got out. I heard about 20 Friday morning, from dark to about 10am. This was just on the edge of Sullivan county more remote then orange.

True, but it would be nice to put a round downrange at a deer.

I noticed a temp drop at around 3 pm had to put my gloves on and zip my jacket.
As I said in an earlier post bow hunters generally get the better deal.

One year I hunted in VA. I drove the nine hours at night after working all day then hunted all the next day hung out with my sister and BIL until 11:00 pm. And was back out in the woods before 1st light.

I've done similar but with fishing man it takes a toll on me.
I did one after a 17 hour shift. Working in a truck shop. Left for nj to go fishing at 3am, got on a boat at 6 am. Fished 8 hours, then when on a different boat for night fishing. Did some surf fishing in the morning left at about noon. Think I was up for 45 hours. We all were. Had a scary moment on the way back.

Did the same when going salmon fishing.

Twenty years ago I could stay up until 2am or so and get up and be at work at 7am.
Not no more. It's just past 8pm and I'm ready for bed.

Today was a bust. My brother had a problem with his power steering so we worked on that late morning then I worked on his bottom step off his porch..

They are calling for 2 to 3 inches of snow tohight & tomorrow. If that happens the deer will change their pattern.
That might be a good thing.
