New York hunters

I didn't make it out as early as I wanted to had a lot of pain on my shoulder. It wasn'toving well either. I've been up for a while and it seems to be moving better now. I'll head out soon.

That deer will be fine eating, we brought it back, hung it up on the meat pole and skined it off while it was still warm.
It makes it hell of a lot easier to skin while they are still warm.
I have been sitting the same spot all season and this was the first decent operturnity for a shot. Hopefully the next one will be bigger. I have sone nice ones on video from the trail cams, but once they get shot at and wise up it is a whole different ball game.

This year we are useing reloaded ammo that I reloaded. Two for two. 7mm08 and 243. Both deer dropped in their tracks.

Congrats..... It's always more satisfying to fill a tag with your own handloads. They've been shot at long enough now that I think they're getting nocturnal. At least around my area.

I have been following this thread with interest. I have also been watching the thread 'The View from Your Stand" and I'm still amazed at the limitation many have on their shots due to the trees/brush. I know a lot of people cut shooting lanes but a lot of the views that I have seen have tiny holes that the hunter has to thread a bullet through. My compliments to you who an do so well.

Just got a small spike, seventy two paces.

A picture from where I stand.

And a close up picture. View attachment 873558

Shot it with my H&R 243 handy rifle.
Dropped right where it stood, no thrashing.

Troy we need to all get together.
Wedn looks like a wash out, if so we will be going to the Greene Gun Club the that a ride over by South Otselic. If you want to go we can stop at Mayhoods over in Norwich.

It's like threading a needle...

Say, where the heck is upstate NY anyway?

I was hoping to see you yesterday, but it's OK. I have to find out what work schedule is this week. If it's not too busy I could sneak out in the afternoons it's a pain not having time off during the week. I know for sure I've got thanksgiving morning. That's all I know for sure right now, possibly all sat, Sunday too.
Thanks, now we just have to get together lol.

We are hunting in the Broome, Chenango and Delaware County area.
The Binhamton area and north, north east and north west.

With the snow off all the branches I can see through the trees better.
The crows were all over the gut pile from the deer I shot yesterday as I walked up to where I stand.

I'd say from Westchester county and up.

Some say "If you can commute to NYC you're not upstate". Some say "north of Poughkeepsie". Kind of like the saying "ya can't get there from here"...

Didn't get much snow here (southern Albany county). Nothing left on the ground. Haven't seen many deer moving, been kind of warm... Hopefully I can sneak around in the woods tomorrow...

By the way, I also think the .243 to be a good killer for whitetail...

I think if you have farms you can call it up state, we all would like to float NYC out to sea lol. It's 1.5 hours from were I love to the city but 50 years ago it was half a day drive. It was very icey getting here yesterday, lots of cars in the ditch.

I had alot of family on Long Island and use to spend summers there in Nortport back in the mid sixties and early seventies. Most of the family there lived in the Northport, Centerport and Huntington area.
We would always go to Coney Island. I spent most of my time fishing orr the Nortport Pier with a hand line.
It was a fun time.
I have a friend that lives in Huntington and will fly back here into JFK spend a few days on the Island then wecwill drive Upstate where my family lives. He has a cabin in Afton on fifteen acres which is the next town north of Harpursville where one of my sons live and my brother lives.
Then I fly back to Seattle out of the Binghamton airport.

I will probably start making deer jerky tonight.

Anyone ever smoke a deer roast. Think I'll make one for thanksgiving.

Pat we need to get together, hope Brent can get off work one day. At least get together one night. I am kinda stuck here with nothing to drive lol.

I grew up in the Bronx. I know, I know, what the hell is a "Bronx". Dad was an avid hunter and competitive shooter so there were lots firearms and reloading equipment in my NYC apartment. Started hunting with Dad when I was old enough to dress myself. It took 3 hours to walk up this mountain where he hunted but what a view. You could see Hunter mountain ski slope plain as day. That was a long time ago...

Anyone hunt with a lever rifle? What caliber?
