So apparently this sweeping gun control law passed in New York. I've read articles and seen posts about bits and pieces of what's in it, but I don't quite fully understand what it does.

Can someone please run down the provisions point by point so I can have a clear understanding when I discuss it with others?

Just heard report on radio about this. This probably isn't everything, but here is what I got:
Assault weapons will be defined as those with more than one military characteristic. Total ban on pre-94 mags (i think it gives one year to sell such high cap mags out of state, possession after that would be a misdemeanor), ban on mags with above seven capacity, assault rifles must be registered. There was something about ammo also but i don't exactly recall that part.

At least one military characteristic, Callen...which could be a pistol grip, muzzle brake, flash-hider, etc.
Weapons which fit the description of an assault weapon must be registered and cannot be transferred/passed on. When the owner dies, they are collected. Failure to register is a misdemeanor, after 1 month a felony.
Magazines must be 7 rounds or less. Currently you can own 10-rounders, but must sell out-of-state within a year in which they will be illegal. Illegal to load more than 7 in a magazine.
Ammo must go through a background check.

There are a few other provisions that won't affect us (i.e. relating to mental health reporting requirements - which should have been about violence and not JUST about guns...or regarding shooting 1st responders - which should be about using violence against first responders).

Vote the rascals out, or vote with your feet if possible. I feel so sorry for this country when I see something like this happening. We have to hang together or the elite are going to hang us all.

If the weapon cannot be sold, transferred, or inherited than it seems to lose its monetary value. Does it go against the 5th amendment?

“..nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

Yeah, this will totally end up going to court. Quickly. I expect parts of it will be thrown out before long. Grandfathering is the key. How can you ban something already legally owned and make it crime to possess said items. At the least, the owner would have to be reimbursed. At that's a whole lot of money, maybe even more than Bloomberg has.

My lord... what a bunch of idiots to pass such a law. If you New York residents don't vote out the people doing such in the next election, you get whats coming to ya.

If everybody with firearms moves out of NY and leaves them to their devices for a couple years or so this would demonstrate what they have done. Then after that wait they should be able to move back into a much more receptive climate.:D If there is anything left to move back there to.:banghead:

You have the option to move it out of state. That's why the law doesn't trigger a "taking" under the 5th Amendment. Of course that would be different if this was a federal law.

I seriously think this was a slap in the face of legitimate gun owners, and meant that way...and it may also be testing the waters to see how much gun owners will swallow. Certainly this must be fought with all legal means, and I'm willing to bet the NRA-ILA is already on it!

Since this "law" bans an entire class of firearms in common use by civilians, I'd hope that the NRA, GOA, SAF, JFPO are all over this.

My deepest regrets to the fine folks in NY who are subjected to this clearly unconstitutional act.

Interestingly NY State legislature is dominated by Republicans, but only 18 voted against it to 43 for it.

It will do nothing to prevent further gun crimes, i guarantee it.Its very hypocritical,as well, the 7 rounds only in a 10 round mag is one of the most insane things i ever saw, what **** came up with this? see what happens when something is written in hast ? im sure the next gangbanger in brooklyn or the bronx will obey that one!

NY state just needs a Texas size feral hog problem, now that they banned the most effective weapon of controlling them...

Republicans and Democrats are nearly one in the same and this is just another example why. There is only big government politicians and small government politicians. This is why I abandoned the republican party and joined the party of peace, prosperity, and liberty.. The libertarian party.

A quick summary for you. Want a firearm move to a free state like Texas

This.... This is EXACTLY what is going on. New York is a "guinea pig" so to speak, to see what the american people will do once faced with the government blatantly taking their rights.

So how is New York setting an example of reducing violence by allowing DEADLY HI-CAP MAGAZINES (which cause violence, according to their mantra) to remain in American circulation by requiring that current owners simply sell it to someone out of state within the year? Shouldn't NY demand they be turned in or confiscated, or destroyed?

Its not about reducing violence. Its obvious its about fulfilling an agenda. I'm afraid my friends its getting scary close to the famous Charlton Heston's quote, "From my COLD DEAD HANDS!"

Yup, the new gun laws made it safer... at 7pm tonight my cousin called me from Manhattan to tell me he got robbed at gunpoint and his head split over a cell phone. Yea, it's workin great already...

This is what Feinsteins bill says as well but if it passes nationally what state do we sell our stuff to?

Imagine the value of all the black rifles and shotguns nationwide, then imagine that value disappearing with the drop of a gavel.

In a nutshell,
New York just banned almost all semi automatic weapons because the vast majority feature at least on item on the list that makes them a "Military" type weapon.

There is very little possibility gun and magazine makers could gear up to provide limited capacity magazines for all the weapons out there and unlikely they would do so just for New York and do so within 30 days.

A Mandatory life without parole for murdering a first responder but no mandate including common folks just made the rules "Us verses Them,"

A couple of problems I see already.

1. Where is the additional money to fund the mamdates coming from?

2. Mental Health counsellors to report on their clients to LE??? What makes them think someone with violent tendencies will seek counselling knowing that they will be reported?
