All our family has keys to the house.
I don't answer knocks on the door which only happen about twice a month.
I have no interest to find out what someone wants unless I know them.

I used to live in a college town. Once in a while I would get someone knocking on my door that was drunk, thinking it was a different house. The unexpected knock at the door at night is always unnerving.

In all honesty this sounds like a fed-ex package you might have to sign for delivery. They will not wait long no more than a sec or 2 and they're gone to the next house, especially during holidays. I wouldnt worry too much, but it never hurts to be a bit more aware. I hope this is what it was...
